Grex Coop10 Conference

Item 89: Arcosanti or Arcology Conference

Entered by polygon on Wed Mar 4 16:57:32 1998:

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but ... I'd like to propose a
new conference.

The name of the conference would be "arcosanti" or (if that's too many
letters) "arcology".

Background: Paolo Soleri, an Italian architect and visionary who invented
the term "arcology" (architecture+ecology) as a new urban form, and for
the last 30 or so years has been building one, called Arcosanti, in the
mesa country of central Arizona, with a motley crew of hippies and
engineers and philosophers as volunteer labor. I was such a volunteer in
the summer of 1975.

By now, the "alumni" of Arcosanti number in the thousands, and some of us
communicate with one another by an email mailing list. Just recently, a
large number of additional alumni have joined the mailing list, the volume
has increased, and there is concern that we should find a better way to
network. Someone suggested the Well. I suggested Grex.

This conference would be open to all. I would be willing to be fw, at
least at first. Nathan Koren will probably be co-fw, once he gets his
account here. I can vouch for him.

More information about Arcosanti can be found on its web site,
www.arcosanti.org -- but remember that our informal alumni group is
independent of (and often critical of) the Cosanti Foundation.

Just a suggestion that you freeze/purge this item and make your pitch in the
long-standing "The Conference Request Item" #34.

What a wonderful idea, Larry. I'll enjoy following the discussions.

Neat idea. I vote yes. (Oops, we don't vote on confs here, do we.
Just create any conf that anybody's persistent enough about proposing.
"Persistent enough" means that they still say they want it after about
a week of discussion.)

It sounds fascinating! I'd peek in, too.

Yes! I'd love to see/read/write in an Arcosanti conf.

What is the Cosanti Foundation?

Re 6. That is the entity that is actually in charge of Arcosanti and
its ongoing construction.

A friend of mine has been there a number of times and loves the place
and the concept behind it. It should make a great conf.

(Re #0: this isn't DOS. 8 letters is no better than 9. And if it's both
"arcosanti" and "arcology", I expect that "arco" isn't taken by anything else
as an abbreviation for getting there ...)
