Item 32: Cyberspace Communications, Inc. Finances through 8/31/97

Entered by aruba on Wed Sep 3 18:15:05 1997:

Here is the treasurer's report on Cyberspace Communications, Inc.
finances through August 31st, 1997.

Beginning Balance $4,215.94

Credits $324.00 Member contributions
                        $203.07 Auction proceeds
                        $465.00 ISDN Fund contributions
                          $5.00 Miscellaneous contribution
                          $3.00 Silly Hat Fund
                   ------------
                      $1,000.07

Debits $60.00 Pumpkin Rent for September
                         $83.00 Electricity for August
                         $20.00 Innovative Concepts phone line
                        $389.95 Phone Bill
                          $7.54 Bank service charge
                   ------------
                        $560.49

Ending Balance $4,655.52

Our current balance breaks down as follows:

$3,782.69 General fund
  $745.00 ISDN Fund
   $60.00 UPS fund
   $67.83 Silly Hat Fund

We had three new members in August (signet, moonowl, and llanarth). We are
currently at 97 members, 89 of whom are paid through at least September 15th.
(The others expired recently and are in a grace period.)

It looks like we had another good month in August, again largely thanks to the
auction. You should note, though, that the size of the general fund (from
which our regular expenses are paid) actually went down this month by about
$30. So if you discount the ISDN contributions, we didn't quite break even.
If you want to see a summary of the auction status, type "!query summary" at a
PicoSpan prompt. Thanks to everyone who contributed in August:

anderyn, aruba, bruin, coyote, danr, dpc, giry, glenda, headdoc, janc, jared,
jiffer, kami, krj, llanarth, macist22, mercedes, moonowl, mta, panic, polygon,
powercow, psun, quail, remmers, scott, signet, srw, tao, toking, and viper2.

Thanks!

I think the total cost of buying the ISDN modems and installing the ISDN phone
lines is going to exceed what we raised in the fund drive. So Grex's bank
balance is going to take a significant hit here.

#2 of 20 by tsty on Tue Sep 9 06:50:03 1997:

ummmmm, i was under a 'sort of' impression that geting the lines
put in was coming from the general fund, but that the hardware
was NOT going to be *bought* until the money was assembled
in one place.

some of hte hardware was to be 'donated until' we raise the right funding.

is there someting wroing with my picture here?

What the board did was authorize purchase of two ISDN routers and the
installation of two ISDN phone lines, contingent on our receiving $800 in
pledges in Agora 57. That happened, so STeve ordered the routers and the
lines. The routers haven't arrived yet, but we expect their cost to
exceed what was raised in the pledge drive (currently we have received
$755 of $1035 pledged), so some of the cost will have to come from the
general fund.

Does that answer your question, TS? The details of the board motion are in
the minutes from the July board meeting.

the big question...does grex become ISDN connected
before this Agora ends...the suspense isbuilding...
I'mbetting on October...an ISDN halloween debut or something
Murphy's Law ya know..

It looks like the routers will arrive on Friday or so, based on some e-mail
I saw today. The plan has been that I would get them set up and get the
connection going, but I'm not going to have time to do that until the end of
next week, so I don't know if they will wait for me or if somebody else will
get them set up.

At that point we probably want to get the connection running for a while as
a test (at least for a few days) before we switch over to it, to make sure
we aren't switching to something unreliable.

substitute "Less reliable" for "unreliable". *grin*

#7 of 20 by scg on Thu Sep 11 07:40:45 1997:

The ISDN connection should actually be quite reliable. This is real
commercial grade equipment we're getting for it.

I'd guess we've got at least a couple weeks before this is going to happen.

When did SCG become the only person who can configure the routers?
If he cant do it for a week, surely someone else on staff would have
some time earlier than that?

#11 of 20 by remmers on Sat Sep 13 17:54:33 1997:

I suspect it's know-how more than time. I wouldn't have a clue
how to configure a router, but scg does that kind of stuff for
a living.

#12 of 20 by arthurp on Tue Sep 16 16:33:37 1997:

Have you ever configured one of those? I have. It sucks. I wouldn't
be surprised if Steve is the only one who would feel comfortable doing
it. Maybe you should try a little more tact for most situatations.
Especially ones you don't understand. Er, Richard.
Outburst over.

#13 of 20 by janc on Tue Sep 16 19:39:34 1997:

I'm sure almost any of us could get the routers configured, with varying
amounts of trial and error. They come with plenty of documentation (three
thick books) which we could certainly read and figure out. Waiting for Steve
to come back will certainly consume less total staff hours, and will probably
end up with the routers up and running correctly sooner.

Anyway, we only just got the routers yesterday. Steve will be back before
the end of the week. I plan to pass one of the routers to Jared tommorrow
for installation and basic configuration at the remote end. Steve will be
able to finish the configuration remotely after he comes back.

#14 of 20 by krj on Tue Sep 16 21:13:35 1997:

Oh, c'mon, I wanna see Richard configure the routers.

#15 of 20 by senna on Wed Sep 17 04:11:43 1997:

I get the feeling that by the time staff had read the material and gotten a
suitable mastery of it, Steve would already be done anyway.

#16 of 20 by robh on Wed Sep 17 11:24:47 1997:

More likely, Steve would have it finished long before anyone else
had gotten the reading done...

#17 of 20 by remmers on Wed Sep 17 16:30:14 1997:

Okay, I think we've about wrapped up that subtopic. Move to
adjourn!

#18 of 20 by dang on Wed Sep 17 22:27:22 1997:

The routers (at least one of them) are now configured. I think we're waiting
on 1) getting one router to the other end (tomorrow) and 2) getting the line
on the other end extended from the punch down block to the room. (2) may have
been done tho.

#19 of 20 by scg on Thu Sep 18 03:37:05 1997:

The router for the other end of the line is configured. I handed it to Jared
this evening, so he can get it plugged in. The router for Grex's end is
sitting on my desk, mostly configured but there were a couple of things I
forgot to do, so I want to go back and do those before I take it over to the
Pumpkin. I'll get it over to the Pumpkin sometime in the next few days.

The wiring for the other end has not been completed yet. Jared says it will
be soon.
