Grex Board Meeting: Tuesday July 21, 2015

Members in Attendance: cross, kentn, tod, unicorn, walkman
(tod gets bumped off the call early on)

* Call to order (sans tod) at 21:44 EDT
  - We have a quorum; tod is having technical difficulties
* Approval of last meeting's minutes:
  - cross moves to approve the minutes
  - walkman seconds
  - passed unanimously; minutes approved
* Schedule next meeting
  - cross proposes Sep 20 (Sunday) at 9pm EDT
  - (no motion, but unanimous approval of date/time)
* Validation (newuser) status:
  - kentn had the sense we're slowing down
  - In 2014 (through July 21) 226 validations,
    In 2015 (through July 21) 178 validations,
    Down roughly 20% from last year during the same period
  - unicorn thinks that shell access in general is less of a thing
  - We're running an old version of OpenBSD; some users notice
    * We really need to move to FreeBSD
    * Time is an issue for all staff people
    * kentn updated emacs recently for a user (though we're still
      behind in versions)
  - We still get new users, but fewer seek validation
    * Some just want to send spam or things, so perhaps this is
      working as intended.
  - Fewer verifications (the higher level of vetting)
  - Perhaps the service simply isn't as appealing as it used to be.
  - Discussion of who uses Grex and why follows. No real answers....
    * unicorn has some thoughts about what makes shell accounts
      interesting - will mail to some folks
* Staff attrition and replacement
  - Walter Cramer (i) has de facto left staff, so we removed him
    from mailing lists to which mail was bouncing, etc.
  - Staff is slowing dropping off; is there anything to do here?
  - Bring in new people?
  - What excites people to be on staff?
  - Goes back to attracting users
* Treasurer report
  - $1472.69 in PayPal
  - We no longer have access to our bank account
    * No one's heard from TS in a long time
* It's late; we'll continue in email

Who is still on staff?

Check /etc/group for the official staff.  We occasionally get
people helping without being official staff, but that is rather
rare these days.
