Terms of office will still begin on January 1, 2014, and are two years in length. Two seats are up for election. Grex membership is a requirement for serving on the Board. Any current member of Grex who has paid at least 3 months' membership dues and meets state of Michigan eligibility requirements may run for and serve on the Board. Self-nominations are permitted.51 responses total.
I never heard back from the rest of the Board and our vote admin prefers to have both of these seats in the special election.
Note the user tod has been nominated in item 343 and has accepted, so that nomination will be counted in this item as accepted.
I nominate walkman for 2014 Grex Board of Directors
I accept tod's nomination. Thank you tod!
Thanks walkman!
Thanks everybody
I nominate bellstar. I don't want walkman running unopposed. Any other volunteers?
re #7 I don't want walkman running unopposed. Walkman is much more capable than I am of helping out Cyberspace.
Sindi, how about you running for the board? And thanks to Tod and Walkman for agreeing to run.
Though I realise he may be too busy to accept, I would like to nominate cross.
I'll accept.
Thanks, Dan!
Thanks, cross. This item does not show up as new with 'r n'.
Nominations are closed as of 11:59 p.m., Dec 20. According to this item then nominees who have accepted are: tod, walkman, and cross. As noted in the item text, the election itself will begin Jan 3, 2014 and run for two weeks. There are 2 open Board seats. If you put a file called "statement" in your home directory, it will be presented by the voting software. Voting officially begins Jan 3. and runs for 2 weeks, through Jan 17. Thank you all for being willing to help Grex!
Can we start voting?
The vote admin needs to set up the voting software first. Unfortunately, the system died about the time he would have been thinking about doing that. It will take a day or two for the setup to occur, I assume. We may want to extend the voting period, too, as people find their way back here (assuming they do).
I plan to set up the voting booth tomorrow. As things sit right now, I'm inclined to run the vote for two weeks beginning next Sunday, January 19, at 0001.
Thanks, gelinas!
Sounds groovy
Since the precise voting date deadline was not met I demand that nominations be extended so that "I" lar can nominate myself as the FW of the twinkie.cf Oh wait wrong box. I,lar, hereby offcially nominate myself!
Nomination are closed as of Dec. 20. An unplanned delay in the voting should not affect the nomination period. Sorry.
The polls will open at one minute after midnight January 19, 2014. They will close one minute before midnight on 1 February.
Note that is 1 minute after midnight on the night of Jan. 18-19. So the polls will be open on Jan 19.
I've now received the list of members eligible to vote in this special election. All of the candidates appear on that list, so all were, and are, eligible of election. Five members voted. Four of them voted for tod, two voted for walkman, and three voted for cross. So tod and cross have been elected to serve two year terms, which started on January 1, 2014. We still have one seat open.
Congratulations to tod and cross. Thank you, walkman, for running and making a race of it. A special election will need to be organized. Thank you, gelinas, for running the elections and counting the votes.
Thanks for the results, Joe. One seat open and walkman didn't get elected? Seems like easy math.
Yeah, I'm kind of confused by that...
Does someone need a minimum number of votes to be elected? (Not counting their own vote).
Sindi, no minimum number of votes is required. If we had had accurate information at the start of the regular election, glitch would not have been a candidate. The special election would then have had more openings. We can't know what might have happened with an additional opening: there might have been more candidates.
I'm still in the dark as to why I'm not in the open seat. Please help me understand why 3 people ran, two were elected and there's an open seat.
I don't get that either.
2 different elections at two different times would be my guess. And the by-laws do not say to move candidates into positions like you are suggesting. This one is up to the vote administrator to decide upon.
Well, if someone nominates me for that seat, I'll accept it.
I nominate walkman.
Thanks Nathan!
We need another nominations item for another special election. I was waiting to hear what our vote admin. had to say about this situation before setting up another item.
My feeling is that there should be another election. If it turns out that there is only one nominee, and that nominee is a member, the actual voting may not be necessary. Of course, we voted in the regular election, when there were fewer nominees than seats. It is *possible* that even the one nominee would not get a vote. Unlikely, of course, but possible. I leave it to Kent to start the item for nominations, simply because I'm too lazy. ;)
So...who is ACTUALLY on the board right now?
As you can tell by reading the recent election nomination items: TS is already on the board with a little less than a year to go, kentn, cross, and tod were elected to new two year terms. And one seat is still open.
I'll try to get an item for the second special election going as soon as I can. We need to define a nomination period and a voting period. Those will be of a similar length and relative timing as for the regular Board election, per bylaws. Don't be surprised that whole process runs into April. After that, getting the results will depend on when the treasurer provides the list of valid voters.
Can we also vote on a minimum number of votes needed to elect someone?
Not according to the by-laws. If no one gets the minimum number, whatever it is, we'd have to re-do the election. The better answer is for people to get involved, get their memberships up to date and vote in elections.
I thought anyone who ever paid dues was eligible to vote. How many active once-paid members are there?
It's undemocratic to determine how many voices are enough be heard.
Re 43: ask our treasurer.
I haven't been asked for dues for more than a year, I think. Are they still required?
If you want to have your vote counted in an election, yes they are, according to the by-laws. Don't make assumptions.
We were told at one point that anyone who ever paid dues was a voting member, but I think to run for office you may need to have paid recently. Do we need more money?
That was a decision by the Board at one time for one election, not a permanent decision. We lowered dues to make it easier for people to become members. We are okay on money right now but the idea of needing more money is not part of becoming a member. It's in the by-laws that you need to be a member to vote.
Am I a member? I voted in the last few elections and have not paid dues for a few years.
Unless you paid for a few years in advance then the answer is likely "no, you are not a member." The definitive answer needs to come from the Treasurer.
You have several choices:
