Item 317: Usenet News Access for Validated Users?

Entered by kentn on Mon Jul 18 01:00:59 2011:

We advertise that in-coming (read only) Usenet is available to all.
See: https://grex.org/cyberspace/policy.xhtml

However news.provide.net comes up as "Failed to resolve news.provide.net"
when you use the default configuration for the NNTPSERVER environment
variable (/usr/local/etc/global.login) and start slrn or, I presume,
other newsreaders such as tin.

So, does Provide still have Usenet news and does our setup just need
the right server name?

Or, do we need to find another server we can use and modify our setup
to allow validated users to access it for Usenet only?

Or do we drop Usenet as an incoming-only service for validated users?

Note: if you are a verified user and have out-going access, you
definitely can access Usenet news if you know of an external server
to use and can set up your favorite newsreader program on Grex.

Also note that our FAQ sends people to groups.google.com.

This came up the other day because a user wanted to read Usenet but
was denied access because he was not a verified user.
