Grex Coop Conference

Item 290: 10/17/10 Board Meeting Minutes

Entered by denise on Mon Oct 18 18:56:02 2010:

Meeting called to order at 6:54 pm.
Present: board members: kentn, gelinas, STeve, tsty, unicorn, denise [we
have a quorum], guests: mary, remmers

Approval of Previous meeting minutes: Minutes have been posted and
reviewed in coop. gelinas moved to approve the minutes, denise seconded;
 approved.

Business:
--Upcoming election planning: Nomination period for board of directors
vacancies is 11/1--11/15 then 2 weeks for discussion; voting 12/1--
12/15. January: install new directors and vote for officers. Remmers
will be vote administrator [unless he runs for board, in which case,
STeve agreed to be administrator]. Will know by the end of this month
how many members will be on the board starting in the new year,
depending on how voting goes on the proposal to reduce board to 5
members instead of the current 7.

--Status of By-Law Amendment Items:
2 items are now up for a vote [through 10/27-28]: --to change in dues,
reducing it to $18/year / $2/month and --to change size of board from 7
members to 5 and quorum to 3. Anyone that pays $18 to become a member
before the end of this voting period will be eligible to vote.

--Town Hall conference item [ongoing discussion]:
-Email is still something that draws people, though spam is a problem.

How much do we trust outside sources/services? Ways to fix the spam has
been floating around. Need to try things to see what works.
-Bandwith, can we increase what we have? [Currently have 50 gigs/month,
using about 12; spam taking up most of this.] Would people use the extra
bandwith to store illegal stuff [like porn]? If told of something,
board/staff should be notified. Grex can be blocked [and has been] for
various reasons. Other things people want: blogging, various web
options... -Can we give up the last phone line? We would need 18-20
people/members to pay for it... It s getting very little usage; when
used, only for a few minutes at a time. STeve moved to terminate this
line on 11/1 [as soon as possible after this]; gelinas seconded
Discussion: When discussing this issue recently [before other line was
terminated], there wasn t enough interest in paying for this. Motion
carried. -Provide.net: still has revenue coming in but not as much as
they d like; this may eventually be a problem. -In the past, the scuzzy
disc was switched to an IDE disc; will eventually need to be replaced.
People want to see movement/action before contributing money to Grex.

--Discussed but not decided:
-telnet removal: Open BSD no longer supports it; post in MOTD plus send
to telnet users that it s going away?
-List of other issues will be posted in coop.

Treasurer s Report: Newest members: gelinas last month, unicorn this
month. Should we be acknowledging in agora as we get new members like
was done in the past?

Michigan corporation annual update: form completed and ready to be sent
in.

Staff report: gelinas has made a staff report in this month s agenda
item [resp 15 of item 289]. Summary: Grex has been up and stable since
the last meeting. Some discussion of unused SSH connections in the
system problems item; no action seems to have been required.

Next meeting: Sunday, 11/21/10, 6:30pm at Zingerman s Next Door.

"scuzzy disc": It's not dirty; it uses the "Small Computer Systems
Interface," SCSI.

I knew it was an abbreviation of some sort but wasn't sure what; hence,
sounding it out works... I guess this is what happens when the
secretary isn't a techie.

Thanks for entering these so promptly, Denise. Nice job summarizing what
was discussed too.

iwlta:

loginid rcurl just contributed 3-mos membership dues ($18) through our
web site ... http://cyberspace.org/member.xhtml and so, not only will
rcurl;s vote be tallied .. it also will count toward pass/fail results.

just so you know, any new/renewed membesrships effective before the
ballottoing closes, will count toward the legal results. other voters/votes
will be tallied adn recognized.

you voice can both be heard (non-members) and be influential (members) as
well

Thank you, drs! We appreciate it a lot! Don't forget there is a
Board election going on right now. Dan and I just put the link to the
election web page up on the Grex main web page this weekend to make
it easier to vote.
