Grex Coop Conference

Item 247: Nominations for the 2009 Grex Board of Directors

Entered by gelinas on Sat Nov 22 21:05:30 2008:

Nominations are now open for the Cyberspace Communications, Inc. Board of
Directors. In accordance with Article 4, Section d of the Bylaws, nominations
were supposed to close on November 15 and an online election be held December
1 through December 15. Unfortunately, I misremembered the timeline, so I'm
opening the nominations late. Unless overruled, I will run the election from
December 7 to December 22, the usual fifteen days, just one week later than
required.

Terms of office begin on January 1, 2009, and are two years in length. Three
seats are up for election this time around.

Grex membership is a requirement for serving on the Board. Any current member
of Grex who has paid at least 3 months' membership dues and meets state of
Michigan eligibility requirements may run for and serve on the Board unless
they are currently serving and are completing the second of two consecutive
terms. People in the latter group are eligible to run again in next year's
election if they are still members at that time.

The terms of four board members have one more year to run: Denise Anderson
(denise), Steve Andre (steve), Mark Conger (aruba), and Chuck Martin
(unicorn). Hence there is no point in nominating any of them.

The two board members whose terms end on December 31 are Dan Cross (cross)
and Colleen McGee (cmcgee). Both are eligible for another term as Director.
The third seat open this year is currently vacant.

To appear on the ballot, a person must be nominated in this item by November
30 and affirmatively accept the nomination in this item before the start of
voting on December 7. Seconds are not required. Self-nominations are
permitted and will be interpreted as active acceptance of the nomination.

I accept.

#4 of 37 by mcnally on Mon Nov 24 03:16:38 2008:

 I decline.

#5 of 37 by bellstar on Fri Nov 28 15:23:04 2008:

I guess nharmon pretty much nominated every Grex account showing signs of
life. Is there a secret message to that?

#6 of 37 by nharmon on Fri Nov 28 17:33:33 2008:

I also nominate bellstar.

#7 of 37 by bellstar on Fri Nov 28 18:01:57 2008:

You already did that on #2. Thank you. But of course I am not a member and
I also am unable of doing anything for Grex requiring physical presence which
is probably the thing Grex needs above all--physical presence and caring of
its core members.

#8 of 37 by bellstar on Fri Nov 28 18:06:09 2008:

The two Grex members I have actually seen doing things for Grex are cross and
gelinas. I propose their nominations and will also vote for them if given a
chance.

Nominations are closed. Three have accepted nominations: tsty, gelinas and
cross. Others may still accept in the next few days.

#14 of 37 by mary on Tue Dec 2 13:43:47 2008:

I've given it some thought and will pass on running for the BOD this time
around. Thanks for the nominations though.

#15 of 37 by jep on Tue Dec 2 16:20:01 2008:

I am not eligible, as I am not a member.

I would not run anyway, as I perceive a conflict of interest for me. I
am a member of the Board of Directors of Arbornet.

I do appreciate Grex and wish it the best, along with all who make
themselves available for it's Board of Directors.

#16 of 37 by cross on Tue Dec 2 19:22:49 2008:

resp:15 Just out of curiosity, why do you see this as a conflict of
interest?

#17 of 37 by jep on Wed Dec 3 17:52:50 2008:

M-Net and Grex compete with one another for attention and money from
mostly the same group of users. They offer the same services, use the
same software and are centered in the same community. We don't have any
conflicts with one another but just as a general rule, I think it's best
for me to be a member of just one Board. Others may make their own
decisions on that and I think they are free to do so. This is what
works for me.

#18 of 37 by cross on Thu Dec 4 03:34:16 2008:

Okay, fair enough.

#19 of 37 by gelinas on Mon Dec 15 01:46:07 2008:

I apologise for the delays in this election, and for the short notice.

We have three candidates for three seats: tsty, gelinas and cross. So I'm
going to open the polls at midnight tonight and leave them open for one week,
until midnight Monday, Dec 22, 2008. That should be enough time for any one
who wants to vote.

The web booth will open as soon as I can figure out how to add the links
to the grex home page.

#20 of 37 by gelinas on Thu Dec 18 02:59:12 2008:

I can't figure out the xhtml, and the polls will only be open for a few more
days, so the web polls won't open. I apologise for any inconvenience.

#21 of 37 by tsty on Sat Dec 20 16:52:24 2008:

if there is no web poll, how else can ppl vote - what method -
instructions ????

#22 of 37 by cross on Sat Dec 20 20:13:34 2008:

type the 'vote' command at the command line like people have been doing
forever....

#23 of 37 by tsty on Mon Dec 22 18:12:40 2008:

#25 of 37 by gelinas on Thu Dec 25 07:06:12 2008:

The votes have been counted, and the three candidates were elected: Each
received four votes from members. The tally of the twelve ballots is:

Candidate Member Non-member Total
tsty 4 3 7
cross 4 7 11
gelinas 4 8 12

We once again have seven Directors of the corporation.

#26 of 37 by mary on Thu Dec 25 12:55:15 2008:

Nice. Thanks to Joe, TS & Dan.

#27 of 37 by denise on Thu Dec 25 15:44:29 2008:

Congrats to the new board members!

#28 of 37 by cross on Thu Dec 25 16:02:43 2008:

I won! I won! Oh, wait....

#29 of 37 by mary on Thu Dec 25 17:14:01 2008:

Reality sets in. ;-)

#30 of 37 by cross on Thu Dec 25 21:19:21 2008:

Yeah, the reality that, if anyone at all voted for me, I couldn't have
lost.... :-/

Which, in a sense, is a bad thing. I mean, not vis-a-vis me, but rather in
the sense that it means that almost nobody was running. What's up with that?

#31 of 37 by denise on Thu Dec 25 21:52:19 2008:

I guess we do have a thankless job, in some people's minds, at least.

#32 of 37 by cross on Fri Dec 26 00:43:54 2008:

I guess the question I have is whether it's in anybody's mind at all, other
than a very small few. The idea that it might not be is what worries me.

#33 of 37 by gelinas on Fri Dec 26 00:56:47 2008:

One of the things to be discussed at January's meeting, I think.

#34 of 37 by tsty on Fri Dec 26 14:38:21 2008:

wow ... now for the earmarks .... ! whooppee!

#35 of 37 by madmike on Wed Dec 31 00:30:47 2008:

Congratulations folks. I'll refrain from saying you deserve it. But I _will_
say thanks!
