Grex Coop Conference

Item 223: Changing bylaws to let staff members qualify to serve on the board without being paying members

Entered by keesan on Mon Jan 7 23:45:57 2008:

Shall we vote on whether to make staff members eligible to serve on the
board even if they are not paying members of grex? This would help one
specific staff member who is not currently earning enough to contribute
monetarily to grex but is helping tremendously with his time. For
example, he just killed four runaway processes at my request, and the load
average is back from over 5 to under 1.

I support this proposal.

#2 of 51 by nharmon on Tue Jan 8 01:33:36 2008:

Oh, wait. I may not be a member in good standing, I think my dues are
past-due...umm, okay I support this proposal and if it comes down to my
vote being the go/no-go I can send in a check, otherwise that might need
to wait a few months.

#3 of 51 by keesan on Tue Jan 8 02:15:41 2008:

Thanks. Would this be an open election? If not, maybe you should wait and
if it does not pass, pay for unicorn's membership instead.

#4 of 51 by keesan on Wed Jan 9 18:23:09 2008:

How does one go about requesting a vote, so it can be help BEFORE unicorn's
three months runs out and he can continue to be on the board?

#5 of 51 by cmcgee on Wed Jan 9 19:10:48 2008:

http://www.grex.org/grexdoc/archives/votes/vote18

This is the membership vote that set up the procedure.

#6 of 51 by keesan on Thu Jan 10 18:09:53 2008:

Apparently 10% of the membership must endorse the motion for it to be brought
to a vote. Which means three more people. Or maybe someone else would just
like to contribute to part of unicorn's membership for the two years of his
term on the board. Or could the silly hat fund cover it? Does the board vote
directly on how that is used? If so, would it be conflict of interest?

#7 of 51 by mary on Thu Jan 10 23:22:51 2008:

Chuck, do you want or need help with your Grex membership dues?

#8 of 51 by tod on Fri Jan 11 04:56:48 2008:

Are you saying Chuck wasn't eligible for theboard?

#9 of 51 by keesan on Fri Jan 11 05:04:00 2008:

Yes, he had to be a member to serve on the board so aruba lent me the money
to pay for 3 month's membership, at the last moment, so he could run for
board. Chuck is very short of cash and I think lives in Flint where it is
hard to find work, and he is in an obsolete field of work. What is the
philosophy behind restricting board membership to paying members, but allowing
staffers to volunteer their time without being paying members?

We have no more than another two months to continue his membership so he can
continue to serve on the board.

#10 of 51 by tod on Fri Jan 11 09:12:24 2008:

re #9
You're welcome to transfer my membership to him.

#11 of 51 by keesan on Fri Jan 11 21:05:36 2008:

Can anyone tell us if it is legal to transfer memberships? Thanks for the
offer, tod.

#12 of 51 by lar on Sat Jan 12 23:52:09 2008:

unicorn will then belong to the small but elite group that tod has
transfered memberships too;)

#13 of 51 by unicorn on Sun Jan 13 05:16:25 2008:

Re #7:
I may or may not need help. I would like to think that by the time the
three month membership keesan paid for expires, I will have found more
reliable employment than what I currently have. I really hate depending
on others to cover my membership, but it may be unavoidable if things
don't change soon. Thanks to everyone for the concern and help.

#14 of 51 by keesan on Sun Jan 13 06:31:44 2008:

Thanks to you, unicorn, for the enormous effort you have put into keeping grex
conferences usable.

#15 of 51 by nullop on Sun Jan 13 23:15:53 2008:

Chuck, shut the fuck up before I driver over to Mt. Morris, Mi and fucking
make you wish that you were never born.

#16 of 51 by cross on Mon Jan 14 23:46:45 2008:

Chad, I think it would be funny if, instead, you tried to come to Quantico
and kick my ass. I can just see you talking to the MPs at the gate driving
onto Camp Barrett: ``Hello. I am here to see Lt Cross; he's in B Co over at
TBS. I am going to make him wish he'd never been born. I'm already wearing
my purple fishnets....'' If you can make it past them and the FBI academy,
then I'd say you have a shot.

Listen Cross,

My cousin Jason used to be an army ranger. His fucking bicep muscles are
probably still bigger than your waist. Also, you have never seen me in real
lfe. All you know is what I say over the internet.

And just for the record, I did take some martial arts and have some kind of
weapons training.

Now with that, butt the fuck out before I kick you in your small penis fucking
GI boy.

This is between me and Chuck Martin.

#19 of 51 by slynne on Tue Jan 15 04:55:22 2008:

I have a cousin who was a airborne ranger too! His favorite story is
that on his 101st jump, he was finally able to tell the guys that he had
more jumps than his mother (which was true, she had 100 jumps)

#20 of 51 by lar on Tue Jan 15 11:08:23 2008:

#16 lol!

#21 of 51 by tod on Tue Jan 15 14:44:06 2008:

re #18
My cousin Jason used to be an army ranger.

My niece sells those mint chocolate girl scout cookies. Maybe they know each
other? Bring your cousin to Quantico to kick Dan's ass cuz it'd be funny to
see an unqualified Army puke and a crossdresser rolling past Hooverville in
their beatup Acura ready to "show their biceps" to a teufel hund. Shit Dan,
time it for March when I'll be at Quantico and we can all have a laugh.

(Way, WAY too much testosterone.) (Way too little maturity.)

#23 of 51 by tod on Tue Jan 15 15:27:17 2008:

re #22
You're welcome to judge me for being immature. The Cyberspace Board has been
way too complacent and lacking in their handling of this obvious nuisance to
Cyberspace Inc. I've been knashing my teeth at the fact that it persists and
people do nothing but enable his behavior. Nobody on the board has reached
out to me for assistance even though I handle his type as a professional.
I'm not goig to *tsk tsk* nor do any heavy lifting so long as the board shows
itself as a lame duck. Why get duped for a thankless job? I'll join in on
the humor and immaturity of this item since I'm just a BBS user in my capacity
and have no reason to think this discussion goes any further than childish
banter. "Way too little maturity." Feh!

#24 of 51 by keesan on Tue Jan 15 15:47:37 2008:

How do you handle this as a professional?

#25 of 51 by nharmon on Tue Jan 15 16:02:45 2008:

I'd like to know that too.

#26 of 51 by lar on Tue Jan 15 17:00:32 2008:

I have already told you...put the gas in his car and he will drive down
and kick his ass.

#27 of 51 by cyklone on Tue Jan 15 21:12:25 2008:

Brian Salcedo.
Not sure that's tod's answer, but it's certainly one answer.

#28 of 51 by tod on Tue Jan 15 22:38:35 2008:

re #24
I don't. It's not my responsibility nor am I convinced grex considers it a
big enough problem. I don't recall seeing folks harping on the grex board
to act.

#29 of 51 by cross on Tue Jan 15 22:44:43 2008:

criticality.)

#32 of 51 by tod on Tue Jan 15 23:15:14 2008:

re #27
Actually, #26 was partially right except I was just going to drive down and
help him find gainful employment so he wouldn't be bothered to entertain
himself anymore.

#33 of 51 by veek on Mon Jan 21 07:25:28 2008:

re #23/32: think lawsuits, and vultures dropping down to feed on the
carcass of your home. Kicking anyones ass is a bad idea, so forget it!

Look Chad is all right and goes about his normal business, grumbling,
mumbling, muttering and spitting. It's when he gets into arguments, on
party, or in coop, that he flares up and really disses Agora (i checked
against party). Anyway.. either lock down the BBS or go learn some Yoga
and deep breathing <g>

That's quite surprising, given how common the name is and the fact
that I haven't done anything publicly notable.

I guess all the rest must go by "Michael"..

(It's probably moot, now, but I don't think volunteering for staff should
qualify one for the Board of Directors. It's sometimes useful to have
Directors who are also staff, and vice versa, but neither is really necessary
for the other.)

#37 of 51 by lar on Sun Feb 3 13:44:40 2008:

this whole idea was thought up by keesan. how could it be a good one?
if she wants chuck on the board so bad let let HER pay for his
membership.

#38 of 51 by nullop on Sun Feb 3 20:54:17 2008:

Chuck is a moron. This idiot spent 6 weeks working on some anti-flood script.
It took me 6 seconds to bypass it. The moron boy chuck just said that I never
really bypassed his script, I just changed my method of attack. For the
record, it was the same fucking attack.

I'm not god gift to Unix. Most of the abuses I carry out are based on how I
observe the system. I observe what goes on, and then use my limited techical
abilities to cause grief. The method is the same fucking method I used when
I used to work as a Mechanical Engineer. You observe what goes on and then
go "Well even though I don't know the internal mechanics, I do know that you
have to take such and such steps to get from point A to point B. If I modify
one of the steps, then I shouldn't be able to get from point A to point B."

Usually I achieve my end results. Sometimes I don't. If I don't, it usually
means that I had some kind of misconceptions to begin with.

Where is this going? I'm really not that sure. And how does it relate to
anything? I have no fucking idea.

#39 of 51 by nullop on Sun Feb 3 21:13:18 2008:

And just for the record, I don't consider everyone a moron. Here is my biased
perceptions on things.

Bright/Brilliant: cross, remmmers, polytarp, eprom

Pretty Bright (Ie I would still listen to): mcnally, krj, naftee, steve

Average (Ie not dumb): lar, gelinas, trig (when he is not stoned)

Dumb: unicorn, nharmon, keesan

Nate, unlike you, I can actually abuse Grex. Unlike you, I managed to get
through both k&r and APUE by the late Dr Stevens. So just shut the fuck up
and go back to figuring out the differences

method vs function

function parameter vs function argument

if if vs if else vs ||

pointer vs reference

#42 of 51 by sholmes on Mon Feb 4 04:51:20 2008:

I would be interested to know the difference between function parameters
and function arguments.

#43 of 51 by sholmes on Mon Feb 4 04:54:25 2008:

as in i have read things like

in

int sum(int a , int b); , a and b are parameters but in
sum(5,6) 5 and 6 are the arguments passed to sum ?

is that it ? or there is more

#44 of 51 by nullop on Mon Feb 4 05:41:14 2008:

Sholmes, you fucking stupid shit nigger. Are you having a Chuck Martin moment?
Let me try to break this down for you fucking nigger ass.

say I have a c function like

p = (char *)malloc(x + 1);

Now say we x is 5.

5 would get passed to (char *)malloc(x + 1)

in malloc, we have the expression x + 1. x + 1 would be the formal parameters
in this case. When we have x = 5, this becomes 6. This means x + 1 would get
evaluated to 6 and passed to malloc. 6 in this case would be the actual
function argument. This idea is similar when you evaluate functions in
Algebra. The only difference is that CS and Math have different meanings for
the word "function definition."

I'm sure the no life unix dork called cross could fill in the rest.
