So are there any particular plans for what happens with the money we raise?

#2 of 156 by volvo on Sun May 12 00:22:36 1996:

Is there some unwritten law about bidding on your own product? (per item #7)
actually could unload it, maybe i could scam w.w.w. access out of the deal?

#3 of 156 by volvo on Sun May 12 00:23:38 1996:

oops, a sentance dissapeared! now where the heck did it go???

#4 of 156 by popcorn on Sun May 12 04:58:30 1996:

Re 1: Hopefully we can use the auction proceeds to get a faster Internet
connection. It depends on how much we raise and how much a net connection
will cost.

Re 2-3: Could you try that again? I'm not sure what you're asking. Yup,
you're welcome to bid on your own donation to the auction, but the money you
spend on buying what you donated would go to Grex.

#5 of 156 by aruba on Mon May 13 22:57:51 1996:

I'd like to suggest that when an item has gone a week without any bids,
instead of it being immediately sold, maybe the auctioneers should enter a
response to let people know this is their last chance to bid. You could
just say "Going once..." and maybe "Going twice..." the next day, etc.
That gives people a chance to change their mind about bidding; especially
if they skimmed an item because there were others they were interested
in, and it doesn't sink in until later that they want to bid.

#6 of 156 by popcorn on Tue May 14 03:58:16 1996:

That makes mucho good sense. Thanks!

#7 of 156 by robh on Tue May 14 05:08:16 1996:

I was planning on making an announcement six days after the final
bid, to the effect of, "Last chance!"

#8 of 156 by jwt on Fri May 17 11:36:41 1996:

Hey, is there a minimum bid? I just had to ask.. What if I bid 5 cents
for the mouse pad and 25 cents for the SVGA card (nobodys bidded yet on
these). Well, on one hand anyone could beat those bids and it might get
started, but, what if I got the card for 25 cents??!? Maybe you should let
people bid anything but if it comes up to be, lets say less than $5.00, maybe
you should charge a min. of $5.. So if someone out bids me by $.50, they get
it but at least they'd donate $5.. Or something to that effect?? no? Maybe
that pad isn't worth $5, but the time and effort and what not... ect.. You
get my point, if you could expect at least $5 from everything it'd be worth
doing this no matter what you auctioned... See ya..

#9 of 156 by bruin on Fri May 17 15:05:56 1996:

JWT's point is a valid one, especially when you must consider that, if the
successful bidder lives out of town, the item may have to be mailed to that
person, and 25 cents won't even mail a letter anymore.

#10 of 156 by janc on Fri May 17 19:48:59 1996:

Some of the people posting items have stated minimum bids. It might be a good
idea for those people who's items haven't been bid on yet.

#11 of 156 by janc on Sat May 18 02:46:36 1996:

(By the way, current bids total just over $300).

#12 of 156 by natbaird on Sat May 18 20:04:26 1996:

If an item must be shipped, who is responsible for paying the shipping
and handling?? the donator, Grex, or the buyer?

#13 of 156 by omni on Sat May 18 21:34:05 1996:

It would be logical for the buyer to bear the shipping costs, unless the
seller was feeling magnamamous. ;)

#14 of 156 by brighn on Sun May 19 03:14:00 1996:

I thought it was mentioned in the Agora auction item
that the seller would be responsible.

#15 of 156 by popcorn on Sun May 19 04:59:00 1996:

Yup, we've been saying that the donator will arrange for delivery, unless it's
specified otherwise.

#16 of 156 by eeyore on Mon May 20 14:19:22 1996:

out of curiousity, would it be possible to donate animals? (we hink that one
of our guiena pigs might be pregnerant....)

#17 of 156 by wolfe on Mon May 20 14:39:39 1996:

um, have you decided how to inform the highest bidder that the
item is now theirs? an email message perhaps? my mom keeps asking
if she should send in the dollars for the truffles yet and i keep
telling her....i don't know!

#18 of 156 by popcorn on Mon May 20 14:45:59 1996:

Rob or I will enter a response in the item. We're a bit behind on pointing
out that bidding is slowing down on particular items. Ideally, we should be
entering "going, going, gone" type responses so that people don't forget about
items they're still interested in.

#19 of 156 by robh on Mon May 20 16:20:43 1996:

I'll sweep through the items and note which ones are approaching
the finish.

#20 of 156 by janc on Mon May 20 20:32:50 1996:

I wouldn't close an item without give at least 24 hours notice.

#21 of 156 by janc on Mon May 20 20:33:55 1996:

PS: According to my notes, high bids currently total $432.50.

#22 of 156 by wolfe on Wed May 22 13:01:25 1996:

um, this may be a dumb question, but, it says in item 1 that when
the check gets to cyberspace communications, the donor will
arrange to deliver what you bought to you...who is supposed to tell
the donor when its time to deliver...grex or the buyer? thanx

#23 of 156 by robh on Wed May 22 13:26:25 1996:

popcorn or I will send mail to the donor.

#24 of 156 by aruba on Wed May 22 13:29:56 1996:

And before that, when I get the check, I'll send mail to popcorn and robh.

#25 of 156 by janc on Thu May 23 17:44:12 1996:

Total high bids: $535.95

#26 of 156 by janc on Fri May 31 17:01:41 1996:

If my notes are not too scrabbled (which they probably are) total high bids
now total $707.75

#27 of 156 by eeyore on Tue Jun 4 18:32:47 1996:

(i know that a hefty chunk of that is mine...sigh..:)

#28 of 156 by janc on Wed Jun 5 17:55:01 1996:

(we thank you for your generousity)

#29 of 156 by tsty on Thu Jun 6 15:58:07 1996:

<<factorials notwithstanding ...<g> >> thank you, eeyore.

#30 of 156 by janc on Fri Jun 7 03:45:15 1996:

Current total: $775.26

#31 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Jun 9 00:10:18 1996:

It's kind of a stretch to get from here to there, but I wonder if we can break
$1000. Anybody else out there have something cool to donate?

#32 of 156 by qt314 on Sun Jun 9 01:57:57 1996:

Rob, I could donate my heart. ;) (this is in response to something you said
earlier. The bidding should start at......? ) ;)

#33 of 156 by aruba on Sun Jun 9 05:18:50 1996:

You know, we don't have anyone offering a date with themselves. Didn't I read
that such a thing was offered on M-Net?

#34 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Jun 9 05:44:44 1996:

Er, um, I think that's not exactly what we auctioneer types had in mind.

#35 of 156 by robh on Sun Jun 9 09:26:01 1996:

I'd feel especially bad if nobody bid on that item. >8)

#36 of 156 by aruba on Sun Jun 9 14:40:49 1996:

Ah. I see your point.

#37 of 156 by fuzzball on Sun Jun 9 22:38:21 1996:

can we pay in cash?
i hope so cause my mom wont write checks for me

#38 of 156 by robh on Mon Jun 10 02:18:59 1996:

I'd really rather not have anyone sending cash through the
mail. Can you get a money order?

#39 of 156 by brighn on Mon Jun 10 02:50:52 1996:

Maybe you should consult with your other auctioneers before
saying that, Valerie... Rob suggested I donate myself not just
as a date, but as a spouse. "Be Brighn's next spouse" was the offer,
I believe.  And, um, no, I'm not willing to donate that.  =}

#40 of 156 by robh on Mon Jun 10 02:54:16 1996:

(The suggestion was, shall we say, not entirely serious.)

#41 of 156 by jenna on Mon Jun 10 03:21:39 1996:

(Rob just wanted to see how much I'd pay...)

#42 of 156 by scg on Mon Jun 10 03:34:54 1996:

Cash throught the mail is risky in theory, but I've never heard of peopel
actually having problems with it, as long as it has something wrapped around
it to make it look less like money.

#43 of 156 by aruba on Mon Jun 10 06:15:34 1996:

Quite a few people send us cash through the mail, but of course it's at their
own risk.

#44 of 156 by janc on Mon Jun 10 16:23:26 1996:

Things definately slowing down. Now at $780.26

#45 of 156 by robh on Mon Jun 10 21:12:43 1996:

They had to slow down sooner or later.

#46 of 156 by wolfe on Tue Jun 11 00:48:47 1996:

i just wanted to say...that arthurp's truffles are WONDERFUL...

#47 of 156 by freida on Tue Jun 11 20:16:12 1996:

Rob, could you send me an email with the total amount listed for items I wond
the bid on? I don't know how to extract that info without having to reread
each and every item from beginning to end. TIA I could donate another
week's stay here at the farm, but there didn't seem to be too much interest
in it except from denise. Maybe it would be more interesting if I donate the
stay for while I am not going to be here...like during the summer for a week
or during a holiday week?

#48 of 156 by aruba on Tue Jun 11 20:23:39 1996:

I can get you that info, freida - I'll send it whjen I get home tonight.

#49 of 156 by robh on Tue Jun 11 20:51:50 1996:

I'll leave it to aruba, then.

#50 of 156 by adbarr on Tue Jun 11 23:07:57 1996:

Freida, you owe $1000.00. Approximately. Refunds may take several years.

#51 of 156 by freida on Tue Jun 11 23:27:26 1996:

Thanks aruba...
I needed that laugh adbarr!

#52 of 156 by adbarr on Wed Jun 12 00:39:16 1996:

Hm. Harumph! Pray tell. Just what "laugh" is this mountain woman referring
to? Not sure at all, am I. We live off the interest. Here in the valley.

#53 of 156 by omni on Wed Jun 12 05:02:00 1996:

Just remember this woman has chickens that need to be fed, and watered and
collected everyday. Might be a cool experience.

#54 of 156 by janc on Thu Jun 13 14:03:32 1996:

 $789.26 -- Only $10.74 short of $800.

#55 of 156 by janc on Fri Jun 14 15:54:48 1996:

Including robh's purchase of an extra peace-lilly, bids now total $806.26.
I think.

#56 of 156 by denise on Sun Jun 16 00:58:34 1996:

I'll be mailing my check for my cookies on Monday... [guess I better
go reread the itme to see who's making the cchip cookies [with nuts]
and let him/her know where to send them!! :-)

#57 of 156 by aruba on Sun Jun 16 12:30:36 1996:

That's Marla (qt314) who offered the cookies.

#58 of 156 by qt314 on Mon Jun 17 14:09:14 1996:

Denise, do you want them with pecans or walnuts. You just need to tell me
which ones, and I will be more than happy to make them. :)

#59 of 156 by denise on Wed Jun 19 22:37:51 1996:

Hmm, Marla, both kinds sound good. How about pecans? And to make
shipping easier, I'll be in MI for a few days over the 4th of July
holiday--assumuming you're in AA, too, we can arrange a pickup.

#60 of 156 by arthurp on Thu Jun 20 02:24:52 1996:

Marla (qt314) says that cool. She only asks that you email her a few days
before hand as a reminder. :)

#61 of 156 by freida on Mon Jul 1 02:08:19 1996:

Okay! I wond the bid on Marla's whiskey cake and let me tell you IT WAS
FANTASTIC!!!!! It has the most subtle flavor and I ate the whole thing myself
just cause it was so good! (Sorry Val, Jan, Amy and Mike, I didn't think of
offering you any while you were here *freida smacks her hand for being such
an ungenerous hostess*)

I Also want to thank Valerie and Jan for bringing the cake, brighn's books
and the plant I got from the auction which Valerie donated.

ThePeace lily is a wonderful plant which seems to like my dark living room.
It is quite large and even seems to like me! (Thanks Valerie!...I love it!)

I also won the bid on Brighn's book and two other phamplets he wrote. One
was okay, one was really quite nice and a very enjoyable read and I haven't
finished the book yet, but, so far, it is also quite good. Thanks Brighn for
donating them!

<bjorn wonders what's taking so long about the shipping of the Grex Mugs he

#63 of 156 by scott on Mon Jul 1 16:34:53 1996:

Bret Weintraub (formerly login zook) has contributed some strategy board-type
games, the cool kind. As soon as somebody has sorted out what they are,
they'll be available here in the Auction.

Hint: There's a still-shrink-wrapped box with Magic the Gathering stuff in
it!

#64 of 156 by bjorn on Mon Jul 1 21:14:21 1996:

<bjorn "walks the plank" off a skyscraper at the sight of the Hint. Needless
to say, bjorn dies when the ground kills him>

#65 of 156 by scott on Mon Jul 1 21:52:59 1996:

I'll be getting the games to robh RSN, hopefully a list sooner.

No seriously, most games are those strategy simulation board games... like
"Starship Troopers", "Third Reich", etc. There's only one thing from M:TG
and that is still shrink-wrapped, indicating excellant taste on the part of
the previous owner... ;)

#66 of 156 by bjorn on Tue Jul 2 00:01:11 1996:

<bjorn considers coming back from the dead, but decides its not worth it at
the moment - I need to be coerced>

#67 of 156 by popcorn on Tue Jul 2 00:02:50 1996:

Re 62: Grexstock got in the way of getting the mugs to you, since I've got
the mugs and I was out of town. Hopefully I'll be able to run into you at
GNO this week and deliver the mugs then.

#68 of 156 by bjorn on Tue Jul 2 01:10:02 1996:

Gotcha.

#69 of 156 by popcorn on Tue Jul 2 14:16:44 1996:

GNO is on Friday this week....

#70 of 156 by bjorn on Tue Jul 2 18:24:00 1996:

Yea, I got llanarth's mail - saved it too.
(Look for the guy with the blue face - literally)

#71 of 156 by ajax on Thu Jul 4 03:38:07 1996:

Grex recently received some miscellaneous donated computer
parts (286 & 386 motherboards, I/O cards, cables, mono monitors).
I think we should try auctioning off the better items here.
On the other hand, I'm wondering if the auction ought to perhaps
end for a while, and be restarted in the future, when a number
of things are again available. This would make it more of an
"event" than a continuous, ongoing effort. What do people think?

Also, one suggestion I'd make for future auction ground rules
is that I think the bids should not automatically be finalized
by the 7 day time period alone, but should be finalized after one
day of "final notice" by an auctioneer (hopefully on the 6th day,
but if they miss it, then bids are still open). I think people
might be more inclined to make an extra bid if they're reminded
that something is about to sell for a great price.

#72 of 156 by aruba on Thu Jul 4 05:49:00 1996:

I like Rob's rule, and I agree that the auction would make more proceeds if
it was an "event" rather than an ongoing thing.

#73 of 156 by janc on Sun Jul 7 02:54:01 1996:

My rather ragged and scribbled up notes indicate a total of $875.26 in high
bids so far.

#74 of 156 by janc on Sun Jul 7 15:10:23 1996:

Whoops, make that $921.26. Wow. If someone outbids Rob on those games, we
may make a grand yet.

#75 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Jul 7 19:13:11 1996:

Re 71-72: I agree that I'd rather have the auction as a special event that
occurs once in a while, rather than an ongoing thing. However, people keep
donating stuff to be auctioned off, and it doesn't entirely seem right to
cloister it away (where?) rather than putting it into the auction immediately.

#76 of 156 by robh on Sun Jul 7 19:54:41 1996:

Yeah, I sure don't want to have to hold on to these games
for an indefinite period...

#77 of 156 by davel on Sun Jul 7 20:34:52 1996:

So I finally get here only to find that the place is about to close up. Story
of my life ...

#78 of 156 by bjorn on Sun Jul 7 20:53:56 1996:

I might have something to donate, but I'll have to check some details first.
Mostly with TSR.

#79 of 156 by freida on Mon Jul 8 22:31:39 1996:

If you just quit accepting donations after say, Aug. 15, or any other date
you set, then it will just be a once a year (or less often) thing. I think
it is cool that people are still donating...wish I could think of something
else to doante!

#80 of 156 by jamie on Tue Jul 9 01:11:53 1996:

#94 of 156 by bjorn on Mon Jul 15 13:25:23 1996:

Let's see: I have no intention of going to TOP anythime soon. I can't get
to GNO, 'cause I'll be at work (unless you wouldn't mind waiting an extra 2,
3 hours.). I occasionally drop into the Rider's Hobby Shop on Liberty - but
those are quick and usually unplanned in date . . .
Nothing right now, I'll think of something - I hope.

popcorn, I have rechecked my McDonald's schedule and should only be 1 hour
late to GNO - unless I decide to get out of uniform before I partake.
However, I am not precisely sure I checked my work schedule correctly, and
I will do so again when I am at work on Thursday to make sure that I piled
the 15-minute intervals of grill-work properly. You may be able to give me
the mugs then - I'll make sure to either wear my uniform or my Grex shirt so
that you can recognize me.

#98 of 156 by popcorn on Tue Jul 16 03:17:32 1996:

If you're really going to be at GNO, let me know. I don't usually go, but
if you're sure you'll be there, I'll go.

Don't worry about recognizing each other. We've met before.

Hhhhmmm..Interesting....I think We should set a new goal.....
        Let's say...a million? (:>

#100 of 156 by bjorn on Tue Jul 16 12:55:15 1996:

Yeah - I know I'll be able to make it to GNO - I'll be at most, an hour late.

#102 of 156 by scott on Fri Jul 19 16:10:35 1996:

Jan, do your notes have the items listed? I'm planning on sending a thank-you
note to Bret (formerly zook) and if you've already got the numbers for his
contributions...

(if not, I'll get them myself)

#103 of 156 by bjorn on Fri Jul 19 17:17:04 1996:

As you noticed, I wasn't at GNO - I had unfortunately copied my work schedule
incorrectl, for THURSDAY only. On to the next idea . . .

#104 of 156 by davel on Fri Jul 19 17:38:08 1996:

bjorn, why don't you folks take this discussion to email? Fascinating as it
is for the rest of us ...

#105 of 156 by popcorn on Fri Jul 19 18:15:34 1996:

Ha! I wasn't at GNO either. :) :) :)

#109 of 156 by scott on Fri Jul 19 22:36:58 1996:

Re 108: What the final total is (will be) for the stuff Bret donated, so I
can send him a nice note saying how much he helped Grex.

#110 of 156 by robh on Fri Jul 19 23:16:27 1996:

Nobody was at GNO for long. By the time I got there, they
were running some kind of concert, and charging at the door. (!!!)

#111 of 156 by scg on Sat Jul 20 08:11:22 1996:

Sorry we missed you, Rob. When they started looking like they were probably
ready to kick us out, we moved it to the roof of Rendez Vous.

#112 of 156 by janc on Sat Jul 20 19:02:30 1996:

I have a pretty detailed item-by-item list.
Not at the computer I'm currently at, however.

#113 of 156 by janc on Sat Jul 20 19:29:52 1996:

OK, total high bids: $1129.01 (total on closed items in $965.26)

The zook items that have been sold totaled $72. The ones still being bid on
currently total $86, for a current grand total of $158. I think several more
items will be closing real soon, so I'd wait on the letter for a few more
days, till we have a more complete result.

Say, did I end up buying a multi-IO card or something? I never got a "send
a check" message on something along those lines.

You did, sort of. It's in the item.

If you want to bring your check to the next board meeting, I'm planning on
being there, with a couple other things to deliver to people, and you can
give the check to Grex on the spot.

#122 of 156 by jamie on Sat Aug 24 03:37:10 1996:

Hmmm....by my calculations I have bought 4 items for a total of $25.50.
If I'm wrong, someone please tell me, otherwise I'll mail the check...And
who do I have to talk to to arrange pickup/delivery of this stuff?

#123 of 156 by robh on Sat Aug 24 03:39:25 1996:

Once we get the payment, the donor will be notified, then he/she
will get in touch with you about delivery.

we've received the payment.

Since it's looking to me like the auction is pretty much over, I've done a
little extra work to double-check my sums. If anyone notices any mistakes,
please point them out. But I'm pretty confident that I have all this right.

#132 of 156 by jamie on Sun Aug 25 04:35:20 1996:

Um, I have no recollection of winning, or even bidding on, this "SC Out"
game that I am supposed to have won...I don't think I would bid on it, as I
am an all-PC person....

#133 of 156 by jamie on Sun Aug 25 04:39:29 1996:

Wow, I do seem to have bid on it, and a few other Mac games....That's odd.
Oh well, I will pay for it.

#134 of 156 by janc on Sun Aug 25 12:06:54 1996:

Many of us got carried away in the frenzy of bidding. :-)

#135 of 156 by denise on Sun Aug 25 15:18:12 1996:

I've already paid for my week in WVa [item 5?], will have to send in
a check for the remainder... I lost all of my data when my HD crashed
a month or so ago, so I guess I better go reread the items to
double check the amounts and where to send payment.

#136 of 156 by janc on Sun Aug 25 17:05:51 1996:

Yes, people should definitely check my sums (though I'm pretty sure I got them
right). Scan response 129 for your name in the BUYER column note the item
numbers (in the first columns) and read those items. So denise would do
"read 5,7,30" to read the three items where she won.

A few of the final bids are vaguely ambiguous. For example, I'm not
completely sure tsty really bought item 58c.

#137 of 156 by rlawson on Sun Aug 25 20:04:05 1996:

Re #129: I bought item 67, not robh.

#138 of 156 by janc on Mon Aug 26 02:06:11 1996:

Oops, mixed up my robs. So correct that to:

               rlawson 20.50
               robh 19.51 146.00

#139 of 156 by popcorn on Mon Aug 26 04:44:30 1996:

Thanks, Jan, for totalling all that stuff up. I was getting ready to do all
that, when I got to this item and found you'd already done most the needed
work. Thanks!

Robh and I will be freezing the whole conference in about a week....

#140 of 156 by freida on Thu Sep 12 13:54:51 1996:

I would like to add my thanks to both robh and popcorn for all the work they
did in putting this auction together. Also to anyone else who played a
significant role in the organization and running of this auction. I think
it was a lot of fun for all of us and made some good money for grex! HIP HIP
HOORAY!

#141 of 156 by scott on Sun Oct 6 00:52:48 1996:

Hey is this still open to new donations? Busy as I am , I do have a cool one
(took me forever to think of it, though).

#142 of 156 by bjorn on Sun Oct 6 00:54:35 1996:

I'm still waiting for confirmation of someone's payment - I need it so I know
when to ship him his new property.

#143 of 156 by robh on Sun Oct 6 01:09:05 1996:

I'm waiting on confirmation for payment for most of the games, still.

#144 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Oct 6 15:50:07 1996:

We need to bug Mark for a list of which things are paid for.

Scott -- Nope, we're not taking new donations right now. Is it something you
can save until next spring? That seems about the right time to hold the next
auction.

#145 of 156 by scott on Sun Oct 6 16:00:56 1996:

Yes, I can donate any time, or hold off indefinately. This would be one of
those hand-crafted items that seem to do well.

#146 of 156 by ajax on Sun Oct 6 17:52:58 1996:

Mark has probably sent confirmation for any payments received, so
items without confirmation probably haven't been paid for yet.
Tracking the bids, payments, and shipments for everything is a bit
more complicated than I would have figured. Perhaps an auctioneer
should update Jan's bid list, add a "payment received" column, and
try e-mailing people with possibly unpaid purchases? (I suggest
an auctioneer do it only because they might have archived e-mail
about what's already been paid for).

#147 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Oct 6 22:34:17 1996:

Ja, I started out archiving the mail, but then Mark said he had a nice system
set up for keeping track of what was paid for. I deleted the e-mail archives
to free up disk space.

#148 of 156 by robh on Mon Oct 7 00:13:53 1996:

I still have all the e-mail I got confirming the various payments,
but it's split up through three different files. I'll wait for
aruba's data.

#149 of 156 by aruba on Mon Oct 7 06:13:18 1996:

Yeah, I'll pass on a list of what's paid for just as soon as I get a chance.
It's been quite a week...

#150 of 156 by popcorn on Mon Oct 7 17:57:50 1996:

Thanks Mark.

#152 of 156 by aruba on Sun Oct 20 22:25:45 1996:

Ok, I have finally reported on my findings. The only corrections to Jan's
report are:

dm's total should be $54, not $49
ajax's total should be $60
eeyore's total should be 0

And the final total should be $1154.51. We have received $856 of that, and
are waiting to receive the other $298.51.

#153 of 156 by bjorn on Sun Oct 20 22:58:21 1996:

Spanks for the Update.

#154 of 156 by bjorn on Sun Feb 16 17:13:37 1997:

Awaits word on payment to Grex for a certain item, so that bjorn might get
it out of his possession.

#155 of 156 by valerie on Mon Feb 17 06:26:46 1997:

Which item is that, Bjorn?

#156 of 156 by bjorn on Mon Feb 17 15:02:56 1997:

As I e-mailed in response to aruba, that would equal confirmation of dm's
payment to Grex for the original version of the Dark Sun boxed set I put up
for bid.
