#3 of 16 by gelinas on Mon Oct 6 01:59:48 2003:

Rappelling is fun, but I don't think people who've never done it before will
be likely to try it. Then again, given a choice between jumping with a line
and without, they may prefer the line.

#4 of 16 by rcurl on Mon Oct 6 06:01:04 2003:

They aren't talking about rappelling as done for sport or rescue, but
an automatic device that lets a person slide down a cable. You can apply
the term rappelling to it if you like, but the devices and their operations
would be very different.

#5 of 16 by gelinas on Mon Oct 6 07:21:06 2003:

They used the word. But my point was that trusting that line the first time
is a challenge.

#6 of 16 by gull on Mon Oct 6 13:11:44 2003:

People have been known in the past to tie bedsheets together to escape
from burning buildings. My guess is a lot of people would find it in
them to trust the line if it was their only way out. The question, to
me, is whether this device is sufficiently simple that someone using it
for the first time, with no training, could figure it out and use it
safely. It's my understanding that there's more than one way to rig a
rappelling harness, and only one of them actually lets you control your
descent. (The term "death rig" is applied to the other way, I think.)

#7 of 16 by rcurl on Mon Oct 6 20:32:35 2003:

There a literally dozens of rappelling rigs, which differences in operation
and safety. And these are just for recreational and rescue-team uses. One
for general public use would have to be different, especially in not
requiring any significant training.

means of use during fire emergencies. At a recent conference in Malaysia,

industry to develop and test redundant, more reliable elevator-dedicated
emergency power systems and waterproof elevator components. NIST is
investigating software and sensing systems that can adapt to changing smoke

during fire emergencies. Such changes could allow elevators to be operated
with remote control from the ground floor during fires, thus freeing
urgently needed firefighters from elevator operation duties." The NIST is
using computer simulation to test coordination scenarios in the hopes that
in the future, elevators can be used during evacuation situations.

FULL MAINTENANCE CATCHING ON IN KOREA: According to The Elevator & Parking
Systems magazine, full-maintenance contracts (FMCs) are catching on in
Korea. Otis-LG for example has had a steady increase in the past four years,
bringing its total FMCs to 1,211. Currently, most contracts in the region
are Parts, Oil, Grease (POG) contracts which are not necessarily preventive
maintenance. Worldwide, FMCs provide much of the maintenance work for the
major elevator companies. For example, in Europe FMCs account for 60%, in
North America 70%, Hong Kong 90%. In Korea, the figure is much lower at
0.2%. Kim Jin Sung, manager of the marketing team, notes that Otis-LG plans
to turn that figure around within the next five to 10 years by educating
owners and managers of the advantages of FMCs.

ELEVATORS INSTEAD OF ESCALATORS?: The Seattle Monorail Project's lead
architect, Alan Hart, has suggested using elevators instead of escalators
for the new West Seattle-to-Ballard monorail line. He proposes using the
units at eight or nine stations. Hart pitched his idea and its advantages to
the project consultants, Lea+Elliott. The elevators take up less space,
reducing cost and size of the stations. His concept is to use a
pre-determined set of glass-enclosed elevators programmed to land and open
as the monorail train approached the station. Preliminary traffic-handling
studies indicate it's doable. Even the public pitches have been meeting with
positive feedback.

500-KM MTS FOR GUANGZHOU: A mass transit system (MTS) has been proposed for
Guangzhou, China. The MTS would include 14 metro lines with a total length
of 555 kilometers, including 67 kilometers of the existing national-owned
railway lines. The system will cover the downtown and suburb area Guangzhou
and other surrounding cities such as Foshan, Shunde and Dongguan. Passengers
will be able to commute between the metro areas within an hour once the
system is completed. Reported by Peng Jie, EW Correspondent

PARIS MAY LIFT SKYSCRAPER BAN: Paris placed a ban on buildings higher than
eight stories in 1974 in the city center, a limit that may be lifted due to
a need for more housing in the area. While the historic district would not
be affected, Deputy Mayor of Town Planning Jean-Pierre Caffet, noted that
"city hall would prefer individual 'sympathetically designed' high rises in
a few 'carefully chosen' locations." The ban was imposed by President Valery
Giscard d'Estaing after a number of skyscrapers were built in the early
1970s such as the 209-meter Montparnasse tower.
