Never saw Francis the talking mule, did you?
re0 oh god what will we do?!
When Mary mentioned to me this morning that Donald O'Connor had died, the first thing I thought of was Francis the Talking Mule. Nowadays we remember O'Connor as a great musical comedy talent, especially for "Singing in the Rain". But when I was a kid growing up in the early 1950s, I knew him as Francis's slightly befuddled human friend in the popular B movie comedy series. At age nine or ten I'd never go to see a musical - too icky and boring. But talking mules? Cool!
O'Connor was a great comic talent. His performance in "Singing in the Rain" is exceptional.
The "Francis the Talking Mule" series was, in a way, the precursor for the "Mr. Ed" TV series.
no shit?
Good one!
He was a great comic actor, but an even better dancer and singer. I mean, the guy could keep up with gene kelly. Thats why "singin' in the rain"is such a great movie.

I don't associate O'Connor with TV comedy, bad or otherwise. He was mainly in films. Hosted a couple of variety series, and won an Emmy for one of them. Never had a sitcom.
