The Detroit Tigers have had a rough season. Let's have a Grexpedition to their last game and show our support. The game is: /---------------------------------\ | Sunday, September 28th, 1:05 PM | | vs. the Minnesota Twins | | Comerica Park, Downtown Detroit | \---------------------------------/ I suggest people in Ann Arbor carpool, and meet up with other Grexers at the ballpark. If people are into it, we could do an early dinner afterward. Who's in?26 responses total.
A rough season? Wow, you are so nice. If we don't win 3 of these 4 last games, we tie the major league record for most losses in a season. We already set a new AL record. sigh... I'd go, but Tracey is being moved into rehab today and I want to participate in her first few days of intensive therapy. The Grexpedition does sound like a lot of fun though.
I want to go.
I'm rooting for the Tigers.......to lose. We need to bring the record back to Detroit.
I'll be going to celebrate the end of this season. It's been hard; harder even than other recent seasons because it's been clear it was possible for the team to end up worse than the 1962 Mets.
Please note, this is Fan Appreciation Weekend, and also Shirt Off Our Back Day. Fan Appreciation Weekend means that a lot of the tickets are only $5. Some normally $20 tickets will be sold for $5 each. I think all of the upper deck seats are $5. Shirt Off Our Back means that selected fans will be given the jersey worn by a player during the game. I imagine they have a lottery for the jerseys.
y'all should wear your star trek uniforms... ...really!
Not to sound rude, but what's the point of going ? they're just going to loose another game.
It might be a nice sunny day. The hot dogs might be tasty. You can tell your grandchildren you saw the 2003 Tigers play a game.
Right mary, why go anywhere if they're going to lose. Great support that is.
They have perked up recently, winning their last 3 games (including tonight), endind the Twins' 11-game winning streak. If you put 3 wins against their 10 straight losses, that's just about .250, their winning rate for the season. If they don't in fact win the next 2, to reach "safety", but win *1* of them, that will make the finale on Sunday crucial, so you might actually see some spunk, and the fans will be pumped.
I think it'll be a lot of fun. jep's in, I'm in - who else? The Tigers pulled off a great win tonight - they didn't quit when they were down 4-3 in the eighth. Craig Monroe tied it with a homer in the bottom of the eigth, and the pitchers proceeded to shut down the Twins until Shane Halter hit another homer in the 12th to win. They're playing better than they have all season.
This season has been the awfulest full season in Tiger history. (The strike years were worse; the 1994 strike that called off the World Series was very nearly unforgiveable.) I'm going in order to say goodbye to the season. If you've never been to the ball park, but are not actively against the idea of attending a baseball game, I urge you to give it a try. Comerica Park is a nice place to spend the afternoon; a pretty and well-designed ballpark. There is a ferris wheel with baseball-shaped gondolas, and a carousel on which you can ride on a tiger, if you're inclined toward such things. There are bronze statues of the Tigers in the Hall of Fame, plus Willie Horton. There's also a bronze statue of Ernie Harwell in the concourse. And then, of course, there's the baseball game itself. The Tigers are the worst team in baseball; the Twins are the best in the AL Central. The Tigers will, in fact, probably lose. (They've won only 2 of their last 27 games against the Twins.) But even so, baseball is a great game.
I'll second jep's assessment of Comerica Park. It's a nice place to spend an afternoon.
Are you talking about the Willie Horton of the George Bush Senior campaign ads, or some other Willie Horton?
Willie Horton of the tigers, not the criminal.
The Tigers have a statue honoring Willie Horton, who was an outfielder with the team from 1963-1977.
OK, the plan is to meet at my house at 11:30AM tomorrow. If anyone's interested but hasn't mentioned it yet, please call me at 741-9351 so we'll wait for you.
The Tigers just won their 42nd game. They were down 8-0 in the 5th inning, and they came back, then won the game. They're now 42-119 and will not break the 120 loss record of the 1962 New York Mets. Yayayayay!
Even if they tie that record, they did better by two wins. Another nothing season. Ah well.
I've known this was a nothing season since May. The Tigers are not competitive and won't be for at least a couple of years. 40 win seasons happen because of severe shortcomings; a huge lack of guys in the organization who can play baseball well. But it's baseball. I've been a Tigers fan all my life, excepting only a couple of years after the 1994 strike which called off the World Series. It hurts me a lot when the team is not even competitive, like this year, but it's baseball and it's my Tigers and I still watch. Last night's win was important to me in this nothing season. I *don't* want my team to be known as having had the worst team ever. They aren't going to be, and it's because they've played with a lot of heart for the last several days, especially including last night. This team, bad as they are, is finishing up the season playing pretty good baseball. It's a lot of fun to watch pretty good baseball.
Ditto what John said. Should be an exciting game today!
re 21 More exciting than last might?
The Tigers won 9-4 today, and so avoided tying the major league record for losses. Yay! jep, danr and I had a very nice time. We got a little wet in the 5th, but otherwise it was a nice day, and the sun came out toward the end. Our seats were in the front row of section 210, near the right field foul pole. Late in the game, the sun was very bright behind us, and I took this picture: /----------------------------------------------------\ | http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mconger/tigers.html | \----------------------------------------------------/ I'll send it to Morena.
Mark had legitimate, if shadowy, pictures of himself, Dan and I on the ballfield while play was going on at today's game. We all had a good game, with no errors in the field. Manager Alan Trammell wouldn't let us bat, though. I believe he felt we had done enough. With our assistance, the Tigers held off their 120th win for the season, and should definitely *not* be known as the worst team ever. A good time was had by all of us. After the game, Dan took us on a short tour of Mexicantown, including an excellent dinner at a restaurant there.
Man, they have some good whores down in Mexicantown. And some good pharmacies.
Whore me up.
