Don't know who he is? WEll, he invented the Credit Card. Now you know who
was responsible. BankAmericard, which later became VISA.

And the world hasn't been the same since.

More specifically, was it the "revolving charge card" that Williams
invented? I think things like the Diners Club and oil company cards
predate BankAmericard, but those didn't let you maintain a running
balance.

I used to know the proprietor of a wig shop in Ann Arbor who claimed
that *she* had invented the revolving charge card.

The joke a few years ago in Detroit: "As a loyal Detroiter, I did all
my Christmas shopping in our downtown. Yes, I bought everyone in my
family wigs."

I believe that Diner's Club was the first credit card incarnation as
close to what we use today. Evolution has turned cc's into revolving
credit lines.

Actually I'd say that evolution has turned credit cards into electronic cash.

These days I often pay for stuff with my credit card, even if I have cash,
because it's more convenient.
