Happy Thanksgiving to all Americans.12 responses total.
Why, thank you Jeff! I expect it to be happy. Is there any sort of comparable holiday in the UK?
Nope. The Welsh celebrate St. David's Day, the Scots St. Andrew's Day, the Irish St. Patrick's Day. The English don't celebrate St.George's Day. Strange. There'll be a national celebration over rugby on the 8th of December, though.
Mike Meyers explaining to David Letterman last night the concept that Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on a different date, a month and a half earlier, was vaguely amusing; at least, as amusing as Mike Meyers ever is. . . .
Why, what did he say.
are there any americans who have been sainted (saint-inized?)?
Yes. http://www.albahouse.org/American.htm
believe the word you're looking for, resp:5, is 'canonized'.
Thanks, I just remembered Katherine Drexel was canonized just a few years ago, it was all over the news in Philly.
Have you ever met Slevix Drexel?
Re. 7: Really? I thought it was some form of punishment.
Re #1: Harvest Festival? It's not a national holiday the way that Thanksgiving is, but I remember it being a big part of autumn. Instead of stuffing ourselves silly, people in the village would collect, prepare and donate food that would be distributed to people who needed a little extra help. I understand that some churches and other organisations do the same here in the US around Thanksgiving. Oh, and we get to set fire to Guy Fawkes too!
In civilised parts of the country, Harvest Festival is limited to hotbeds of conservatism, i mean, schools. ;-P
