Item 127: Whats Putin upto?

Entered by sj2 on Sat Oct 25 16:44:33 2003:

In the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, Russia has set up a
military base - its first on foreign soil since the USSR imploded. The
Kant airbase is also close to a US airbase established two years ago.
How do the two co-exist?

I don't know about that. ""We're bored of lobster," the press officer said,
"It's on the menu every couple of weeks." ". Maybe the Americans go over
to the movie party on Saturday night to enjoy the borscht.

I thought all that Russians would be concerned about, right now, would
be fixing their broken house instead of going around poking their
nose. They anyways don't have enough money to keep up their huge army,
so why do they want an airbase on foreign soil?

The article I saw suggested two reasons: re-establishing influence in their
former dominions, and insuring their own security.
