There has to be a moral to this story. Here is a guy who faced death daily
in Iraq. He comes home and drives on America' roadways and dies in his first
weekend home. Does fate have justice?

There's always this big assumption that the universe has to make sense.
Why does it have to make sense?

In ancient rome, ceasars used to lead triumphant parades in war chariot
celebrating great military victories and standing behind him would be a
slave wispering into his ear over and over "all glory is fleeting".
Gung fu-tse (confuscius) had a saying "Fame, like the wind disappears
into thin air".

That's a weird way to gain noteriety: die accidentally after being
accidentally associated with an unrelated news story. Are the news media
starved for real news?

#5 of 21 by pvn on Thu Jul 10 07:10:17 2003:

You bet. Its the "silly season". Any newshound or copy editor could
tell you that. For such an old fart you don't seem to know much.

This is damn sad. My commiserations to the family.

I guess pvn can't identify rhetorical questions.

It's a coverup of the fact that the rescue was partially staged for TV.
Expect other vets from than operation to start dying in accidents. ;)

Re #3, Full version
"For over a thousand years, Roman conquerors returning from the wars
enjoyed the honor of a triumph -- a tumultuous parade. In the
procession came trumpeters and musicians and strange animals from the
conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and
captured armaments. The conqueror rode in a triumphal chariot, the
dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children,
robed in white, stood with him in the chariot, or rode the trace
horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror, holding a golden crown,
and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting."

Re#8, Wag the dog?

Btw, isn't every death equally sad?? Ok ... except maybe baby killers.
rapists and the like.

#11 of 21 by mary on Thu Jul 10 13:17:22 2003:

And people dying from painful diseases, people who have lived
too long, infants that were born way too soon. The list
goes on.

I liked Scott's #8.

Re #10: Logically, that's probably true. But the fact is we mourn some
people more than others. For the extreme example, consider Princess
Diana or any of the members of the Kennedy family that have died.

I'm starting to grow leary of cars these days. Lost two friends (close ones
at that) in car accidents.

Moral of the story for me... same as always... seize the day! :)

Eat the cake first... life is too short!

   Be well everyone!

Army 'error' led to Lynch capture

"An Iraqi ambush in which 11 American soldiers died and six, including
Private Jessica Lynch, were captured occurred because of mistakes and
malfunctions, a report from the US army has concluded."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3055515.stm

"The report also says that Private Lynch received her injuries when
the Humvee jeep she was riding in was hit by gunfire and slammed into
a truck - not in a dogged last-stand fire fight with the enemy as some
media reports had suggested."

(Re #15: I visit a place called "Eisenhower Center" every week. Several
buildings full of people who suffered serious brain damage in car crashes.
Walking through there can definately make you leary of cars.)

Re #17: You mean "leery". "Leary" is a guy that the Moody Blues
had a song about and neglected to freeze himself, if I recall correctly.

Since I'm no fan of brain damage (saw a sad case yesterday, at a
restaurant), I'm glad that I have an automobile for transport instead
of a horse. What I know of the dangers of horses and what they did
when they were the major mode of locomotion is truly scary.

#19 of 21 by drew on Tue Jul 15 01:52:04 2003:

And to my knowledge any yahoo who could afford a horse was legally allowed
to just hop onto the beast and ride off. No licencing, insurance requirements,
registration, or any such thing. There wasn't even an age limit.

Or was this all the case? I suppose I could be wrong here...

#20 of 21 by pvn on Tue Jul 15 07:18:33 2003:

Probably not. I wonder these days. At the very least the byproduct of
a parked horse is probably littering and possibly a hazmat situation.

Re #19: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's true. It was also true of cars, at
first.
