Item 7: Becoming a Member of Grex

Entered by aruba on Sun Jun 22 23:00:19 2003:

  ________ is run cooperatively by a not-for-profit
 / _____/______ ____ ___ ___ corporation known as Cyberspace
/ \ __\_ __ \_/ __ \\ \/ / Communications, Inc. and is totally funded
\ \_\ \ | \/\ ___/ > < by members of the corporation. As the
 \______ /__| \___ >__/\_ \ treasurer of Cyberspace Communications,
\/ \/ \/ I'd like to say a few words about why you
should become a member of Grex. Becoming a member...

...helps keep Grex alive. Your donation helps us pay our phone
bills, electric bills, rent, and internet connection costs. These
bills currently run about $420/month. Besides, dead Grexes smell
   even worse than road kills.

...will help Grex expand so that it can offer even more services
   to its community (that's you!)

...gives you the right to vote in Grex elections. If you don't
like the way things are being run here, you can vote the bums
out, or you can call a vote on an issue you think is important.

...allows you to use our Internet link and do fancy stuff like
   telnet, ftp, irc, and more.

...wins you the undying gratitude of all who love Grex.

...will make you feel like a really great person (just a little poorer).

Membership costs US$6 per month or US$60 per year (cheap!). Dues are 100%
tax deductable. If you pay for at least three consecutive months, you
become a voting member, and if you pay for 3 months all at once you may
request a copy of the 32-page Grex handbook, "Wizard in Training", and
I'll send it to you.

Institutions are also welcome to become members of Grex, and several have.
The only restriction is that only human members may vote.

To become a Grex member, send cash, checks, or money orders to:

Cyberspace Communications, Inc.
P.O. Box 4432
Ann Arbor, MI 48106-4432

Or you can send money with a credit card over the net using Paypal. See
/---------------------------------------\
| http://www.cyberspace.org/member.html |
\---------------------------------------/
for more information.

(If you send cash or a money order, or use Paypal, please send a photocopy
of a current ID, such as a driver's license or student ID card. If you
send a personal check with your name pre-printed on it, that's good enough
ID for us.)

Feel free to send me mail if you have questions about membership, or see
the membership FAQ at

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

hai.. can you Add PsyBnc to my account?

#2 of 34 by kip on Mon Jun 23 01:58:27 2003:

hehe, I've got to make time to see how many times this has been asked and how
many fun ways this could be answered.

But for now, I'll give you the short polite answer:

Sorry, no.

#3 of 34 by polytarp on Mon Jun 23 02:14:22 2003:

Who are you, Kip?

#4 of 34 by kip on Mon Jun 23 03:08:43 2003:

Your latest victim?

#5 of 34 by kip on Mon Jun 23 03:16:22 2003:

d0p6, a very detailed accounting of why the answer to your request is "no"
can be found at http://www.cyberspace.org/staffnote/eggdrop.html

Take care and enjoy the rest of the system.

#9 of 34 by dcat on Mon Jun 23 15:44:58 2003:

indeed.

i'm mildly curious who the institutional members are.

Re #8: Back when Scott was in his phase of making his text look weird, I
wrote a little program to put boxes around things and do drop capitals in
figlet. It also allows one to specify a function for the left margin in
terms of the line number, so that, for instance, the margin can zigzag or
look like a sine wave. I haven't used that as much as I should have, I
 think.

The list of members is available by typing "members | fmt". There are
currently two institutional members, mnac and seeker.

#11 of 34 by eskarina on Mon Jun 23 18:42:21 2003:

what's the fmt for?

#12 of 34 by aruba on Mon Jun 23 18:42:59 2003:

fmt makes it so multiple names appear on a line. (Otherwise it's one name
per line.)

#14 of 34 by slynne on Sun Jun 29 14:57:36 2003:

What are you trying to do? I think if you type "help commands" at Ok:
prompt, it will give you a list of commands. I could be wrong though, I
have been using the web interface for so long, I barely remember.

#15 of 34 by aruba on Mon Jun 30 13:51:31 2003:

Please thank jplatt, dpc, valerie, and mju for renewing their memberships.

#16 of 34 by naftee on Tue Jul 1 22:33:45 2003:

Why?

#17 of 34 by polytarp on Fri Jul 4 10:38:55 2003:

I should read Agora more often.

#18 of 34 by naftee on Tue Jul 8 02:17:36 2003:

Agora is 99.1% boredom

#19 of 34 by polytarp on Tue Jul 8 08:45:03 2003:

I know, but reading your stuff is good, because the Grexists respond to you
in funny manners.

#20 of 34 by aruba on Fri Jul 11 13:55:43 2003:

Re #16: The reason to thank people for supporting Grex is that without their
support, Grex would cease to exist. So if you feel you benefit from Grex,
then you have the members to thank for making that possible.

Please welcome Georg Koch (gorg) for becoming a member of Grex! And while
you're at it, thank bookie for renewing his membership. Thanks!

#21 of 34 by charcat on Tue Jul 15 07:03:29 2003:

Charcat welcomes gorg to Grex and also waves a thanks to bookie.
purrs to you both! =^o.-^=

Got an email this morning that a good friend in Wisconsin had a pretty nasty
car crash, and is it the hospital.

#23 of 34 by markag on Fri Sep 12 05:03:12 2003:

scott , I hope your friend is alright.

#24 of 34 by markag on Fri Sep 12 05:05:24 2003:

How often does grex check it's P.O Box?

#25 of 34 by other on Fri Sep 12 10:00:38 2003:

Usually at least once a week, I think.

#26 of 34 by aruba on Fri Sep 12 15:20:25 2003:

I see that I have been neglecting to thank people. Sorry! I blame society.

In July we had 2 new members: Georg Koch (gorg) and Cindy Gelinas (lhbunkie)
In August, we had one new member: John Kachurick (jokach)
In September, so far, we have one new member: Mark Griffin (markag)

Please welcome gorg, lhbunkie, jokach, and markag as our newest members!

Also, please thank bookie, jmm, wh, mdw, remmers, charcat, kaplan, scott,
krj, witling, n8rxs, coyote, mooncat, dpfitzen, and dpc for renewing their
memberships in July through September.

I apologize again for not being more prompt in my public thanks. Membership
dues add up to the vast majority of Grex's (small) income each year, so
these are the people who make it possible for Grex to stay online. Thanks
everyone!

I feel warm all over now.

#28 of 34 by aruba on Mon Sep 15 22:15:55 2003:

Please welcome Fahad Hoda (fhoda) as our newest member!

#29 of 34 by other on Mon Sep 15 22:49:56 2003:

Welcome, Fahad! It Gets Easier(TM)!

#30 of 34 by markag on Mon Sep 15 22:57:39 2003:

Whats the record for most new memberships in a month?

#32 of 34 by aruba on Tue Sep 16 14:39:57 2003:

A cursory search turns up the fact that we had 10 new members in both March,
1995 and May, 2000. I won't swear that's the record though.
