Right.
HElp!
Thank you, Larry, for once again elevating the level of discussion in Agora. :) (For some reason, this item always reminds me of an arcade game I was fond of playing about twenty years ago called "Elevator Action".)
Silly.
Not at all silly. Elevators are important. They also generate a lot of neat math/programming problems. Does a full elevator stop at every floor with a ride request? Where do empty elevators stay, at the bottom of the shaft? If one person gets on an empty elevator at the top and then pushes all buttons should the elevator stop at every floor on the way down or only those floors with someone wanting to get on going down?
(How would the elevator know that just one person got on and not several?)
Re 7. Because the elevator automatically measures the weight of its load.
Re 6-7. The RISKS Digest once had a description of a subroutine in one company's elevator programming. If all the buttons are pressed, and the weight in the elevator is below a certain value, then all the selections are cleared, and the elevator returns to the main floor. The subroutine was named KIDS.
Re #8: The number of people can't be inferred from the total weight. For example, the combined weight of two midgets might be the same as that of a normal-sized adult.
Re #10: You can count people who get on and off, and weigh them in the process. Besides, it's unlikely that anyone riding the elevator alone would weigh less than about 60 pounds. It should be easy to detect the presence vs. absence of people of any weight with a good enough scale (people move around), so cancelling the floor selections when everyone leaves should be feasible.
I doubt a graph of weight vs. time would suffice to count people. You're bound to have problems due to people having 2 legs, people who enter simultaneously, and people who jump up and down once aboard. Suitcases or carts would also be a problem. You might have better luck measuring CO2 or infra-red emissions.
Why would the elevator software need to know the precise number of people on the elevator? The total weight will surely be enough information for any problem. Individual elevator users may weigh as little as 40 pounds or as much as 400 pounds, but I suspect that groups of people regress to the mean very quickly. The probable weight distribution for a group of five random people would be a very tight bell curve. And if the weight is nearing the rated load limit for the elevator, it doesn't matter one but how many people it is. There isn't room within the weight capacity for more. Moreover, if you know that a group of people weighs a total of 500 pounds, does it really matter all that much whether it's two or three individuals? Three people weighing a total of 500 pounds probably don't take up much more space in an elevator than two people of the same total weight. If ten floor buttons are selected, and the weight of the cargo is less than 60 pounds, something silly is going on. Presumably there is a formula, and presumably the formula is quite conservative, so that three midgets who select three different floors will not be caught by it. My guess is that there's not much reason to worry about this in elevators with fewer than ten or a dozen stops. "Fuzzy logic" elevators which make judgements about which available elevator should respond to a call on a given floor can do so by comparing the load. If one elevator has a light load, and the other has a heavy load, the one with the lighter load is almost always going to have more room for additional passengers. The few cases where this heuristic would give the wrong answer are unlikely to create much inconvenience: a guy alone with a small but extremely heavy package might not have to stop at any intermediate floors. (But imagine how heavy the package would have to be to simulate a full elevator.) An elevator packed with a with a teacher and 15 kindergartners might be treated as if it were only half full, and stop at all the floors that the guy with the heavy package missed. Or, an elevator being used to transport a huge, empty box might stop at many floors, in preference to one already half full of people but with some unused space. But if the building is tall enough to have multiple fuzzy logic elevators, it is presumably also equipped with a service elevator for moving large items.
Re #12: Most people don't go up and down by more than 2 inches when they walk. The time required to fall 2 inches in a 1 G field is sqrt( 2 * 2/12 / 32.2 ) = ~0.1 sec. People take a lot longer than that to get on or off an elevator, so by averaging weight over that period of time you can probably count discrete riders and measure their weights. That would also give you an idea of what riders desired which (newly selected) floors. Re #13: Knowing the precise number guards against pranks better than being able to sense the mere presence or absence of riders. Knowing that there are e.g. 5 floors selected but only 2 riders lets the elevator software do something about it - what to do is another question.
One'd assume that heavier people would mean more weight concentrated
in a small area, perhaps a corner of an elevator. I haven't given much
thought to the issue, but it seems significant.
I'm with Larry on this one. A simple sensor with simple logic will do the job right 90% of the time, and when it is wrong, it won't matter much. KISS counts for more than the added value of more complex sensors or more complex processes.
