Grex Agora46 Conference

Item 38: Planning the 2003 Grex Anniversary Picnic

Entered by krj on Thu Jun 26 21:09:20 2003:

It's time to pick a date for the Grex Anniversary Picnic. This picnic
is held every year on a weekend close to the date Grex opened to the
public, which was July 18, 1991.

The traditional location for the picnic is Island Park in Ann Arbor,
where early Grex organizing discussions were held.

The recent traditional date for the picnic has been the Sunday after
the Ann Arbor Art Fair; this year, that would be Sunday, July 20, 2003.

The only possible twist is that this year, M-net has scheduled a
picnic to celebrate its 20th birthday on Saturday, July 19th, the
day before Grex's traditional date. M-net did this on behalf of
a number of out-of-town M-netters who wanted to combine a trip to
the Art Fair with the M-net party.

I suggest that Grex stick with its traditional date and location.
Discuss.

(I think the "traditional" date and location will be just fine.)

agora1 is certainly still online.

I say go with the 20th. THose who want to attend both picnics can attend
both.

#5 of 67 by remmers on Fri Jun 27 11:44:12 2003:

I would probably attend both if I could, but I'll be out of town
that weekend. C'est la vie, I spose. It's possible that I'll see
a Grexer/M-Netter or two where I'm going, though.

#6 of 67 by jep on Fri Jun 27 13:09:00 2003:

Anyone from Grex is welcome to come to the M-Net 20th anniversary
party, at Gallup Park on July 19 from 4-7 pm, but the fact that M-Net
is having a party need not affect Grex's plans in any way.

resp 5 Where are you going?

#8 of 67 by krj on Fri Jul 11 19:29:21 2003:

I'm hearing a deafening lack of interest in a 2003 picnic.

#9 of 67 by janc on Fri Jul 11 19:29:59 2003:

If there is one, we will come.

#10 of 67 by scott on Fri Jul 11 19:44:44 2003:

I'll come.

#11 of 67 by krj on Fri Jul 11 20:10:38 2003:

What's the traditioinal time? 2 pm? I don't remember.
Should go look in last year's Agora.

#12 of 67 by maryeliz on Fri Jul 11 22:56:19 2003:

Okay i just talked to my mom about this last night and we will be there,
weather pending.

#13 of 67 by gelinas on Mon Jul 14 15:55:49 2003:

Having seen it in the motd, I put it on my calendar at the start of this
session. I expect to be there.

#14 of 67 by krj on Mon Jul 14 18:20:23 2003:

I'll bring the same contribution I always bring, in the years I'm
in town for the Grex picnic: 30 hot dogs, and all the accessories:
buns catsup mustard relish charcoal.
I will endeavor to come up with some tofu dogs for the vegetarians
but I make no promises.

Ew!!!!

Re #8: There's an apparent deafening lack of interest every year,
but there always seems to be a good turnout nonetheless.

#17 of 67 by maryeliz on Tue Jul 15 01:15:08 2003:

Okay lately i've been thinking about what to bring to the picnic besides
cupcakes and something to drink. any suggestions ???

#18 of 67 by keesan on Tue Jul 15 01:26:29 2003:

I like fruit or fruit juice. Or salad. It is very generous of you to want
to bring three things. I hope we don't get poured on like last year.

#19 of 67 by scott on Tue Jul 15 05:16:02 2003:

Potato salad, chips, a big thing of water (& cups), a lighter in case Ken
forgets his, etc. - haven't yet decided what to bring myself, though.

#20 of 67 by polytarp on Tue Jul 15 06:19:14 2003:

You should take some hashish.

#21 of 67 by dcat on Tue Jul 15 07:06:22 2003:

I will bring the lighter that eskarina left behind when we were doing
fireworks, as I have no use for it.

Not sure what else I'll be able to bring.

#22 of 67 by lynne on Tue Jul 15 14:22:56 2003:

scott, you'll be back in a^2 by then?

#23 of 67 by scott on Tue Jul 15 17:48:52 2003:

I'm heading back tomorrow.

#24 of 67 by mary on Tue Jul 15 19:21:36 2003:

Safe journey, Scott.

#25 of 67 by gelinas on Sun Jul 20 23:25:17 2003:

The picnic was fun. We should do it again next year, if not sooner.

#26 of 67 by polytarp on Sun Jul 20 23:33:39 2003:

AGHHAHAHA, YOU GOT RAINED ON!

#27 of 67 by gelinas on Mon Jul 21 01:14:43 2003:

Yup. We did. So?

#28 of 67 by dcat on Mon Jul 21 01:58:34 2003:

I'm sorry I missed most of it, but it was nice putting a few more faces to
names. The Frisbee with the Erics was fun :)

#29 of 67 by goose on Mon Jul 21 03:15:38 2003:

I'm sorry I missed it, familial obligations....

#30 of 67 by mary on Mon Jul 21 03:37:40 2003:

Who was the guy in the white tee playing frisbee? He is good.

I missed the river. Next year someone please remember to bring
it along, okay?

I too had a nice time.

#31 of 67 by gelinas on Mon Jul 21 03:43:28 2003:

Apparently, that was one of the Erics, specifically ea, formerly known as
hhrat.

I've met him, but didn't recognise him. :(

#32 of 67 by other on Mon Jul 21 08:04:04 2003:

I think she may have been referring to Dan Earle (login 'y'), but I'm not
sure if she left before he showed up and started playing.

Mary, you mean the guy in the shirt which said simply, "VEGAN" ?

#33 of 67 by mary on Mon Jul 21 12:24:47 2003:

The shirt was too far away to read. But he was playing the
western-most position. He was able to not just place the
frisbee but do it with those graceful high floaters. But
you were all good at it. It requires a touch. I don't have it.

#34 of 67 by scott on Mon Jul 21 12:27:07 2003:

I had to leave about a quarter-to-four, but still managed to get a hot dog.

#35 of 67 by krokus on Mon Jul 21 14:30:12 2003:

I wanted to show up, but got involved with something else eariler in
the afternoon, so wasn't able to get down there until just after 6pm.
Since I was pretty sure people wouldn't still be there, I opted to
not even try.

#36 of 67 by janc on Mon Jul 21 14:32:19 2003:

I have fond memories of playing frisbee in the law quad with M-Netters after
Friday Happy Hours at Dominicks. Kid chasing interferes with frisbee playing,
at least until the kids are big enough to play.

Don't you gate it when rugrats get underfoot.

#38 of 67 by anderyn on Mon Jul 21 16:57:19 2003:

I wanted to come ,but had a Griffin who was having a love affair with his lima
beans and painting grandma with them. It was messy. :-)

#39 of 67 by krj on Mon Jul 21 17:23:26 2003:

Fortunately Scott was around to get the fire going. I'm not very good at
it without a big bottle of lighter fluid and I'd been talked into
not using the lighter fluid this time.

The rain wasn't an issue at all. Most folks were under the big tree and
looked out and said, Gee, it's raining. Didn't even dampen the hot dog
grill. A little while after the rain stopped, the sun returned and
we continued on until about 6:30 pm, maybe another two hours past the rain.

My recollections of who was there, augmented by some folks who were in
party last night. Family groupings are listed together:

   mary
   maryeliz / qborthwi I / qborthwi II
   dcat
   ea
   scott
   bruin
   katie
   janc / valerie / arlo / kendra
   tpryan
   drew
   other
   steve / glenda / dewshine
gelinas / Mrs. Gelinas, whose name I am always forgetting
   krj
   Grex's old landlord
   y
   balynce
   y & balynce's 3 friends
   bhelliom (& Loki)
   aruba / Carol

We skipped because I was taking a nap part of the time and because the fumes
from barbecue fuel make me sick and I already had an overdose at the art fair.
If next picnic will be fume free I would appreciate advance notice.

#41 of 67 by glenda on Mon Jul 21 18:32:55 2003:

This time there was no lighter fluid used, and it was real charcoal, not
briquettes. Just smelt like a wood fire. (We supplied the charcoal and don't
use things like Kingsford and the ilk. We buy only natural wood charcoal.

#42 of 67 by slynne on Mon Jul 21 19:21:57 2003:

I thought all charcoal was made from wood. shows what I know.

#43 of 67 by gelinas on Mon Jul 21 19:48:58 2003:

Yeah, but what happens to the wood after it is burnt into charcoal?
Apparently, sometimes various things get added to the wood while it is
being pressed into shape.

#45 of 67 by krj on Mon Jul 21 21:12:42 2003:

The no-lighter-fluid thing sort of sprung up at the last minute because
STeve was bending my ear about it on Saturday night while we were at
Art Fair, and because he offered his charcoal and home-made chimney.
Try to remind me about this next year, Sindi, and maybe we can accomodate
your wishes.

Nobody ate the tofu hot dogs. I've got two leftover packages of tofu
dogs in my fridge (Five per pack). Free to anyone I can deliver them
to without a lot of trouble.

#46 of 67 by ea on Tue Jul 22 01:06:48 2003:

re #30-33 - I was one of the Frisbee Tossers during the first round of
tossing, when it was just other, dcat, and myself. I didn't participate
during the 2nd round of tossing.

#47 of 67 by keesan on Tue Jul 22 16:57:54 2003:

Ken, it was kind of you to bring tofu hotdogs. I would not have eaten them
anyway because I can't stand the taste of hot dogs (too salty and greasy).
I will ask Jim if he is interested.

#48 of 67 by gull on Wed Jul 23 14:29:05 2003:

keesan prefers food with as little flavor as possible. ;>

#49 of 67 by keesan on Wed Jul 23 14:47:17 2003:

Salty-greasy is not flavor. Jim says he can't stand the taste of hotdogs
either.

I'll take those veggie dogs, Ken. Assuming there's a convenient way to

Humans evolved to like fats - not only is some an essential dietary
component, but they also provide energy and insulation. Their negative
effects usually appear after early reproductive years and hence they
help clear the population of useless old people.
