It's time to pick a date for the Grex Anniversary Picnic. This picnic is held every year on a weekend close to the date Grex opened to the public, which was July 18, 1991. The traditional location for the picnic is Island Park in Ann Arbor, where early Grex organizing discussions were held. The recent traditional date for the picnic has been the Sunday after the Ann Arbor Art Fair; this year, that would be Sunday, July 20, 2003. The only possible twist is that this year, M-net has scheduled a picnic to celebrate its 20th birthday on Saturday, July 19th, the day before Grex's traditional date. M-net did this on behalf of a number of out-of-town M-netters who wanted to combine a trip to the Art Fair with the M-net party. I suggest that Grex stick with its traditional date and location. (I think the "traditional" date and location will be just fine.)

agora1 is certainly still online. I say go with the 20th. THose who want to attend both picnics can attend both.
I would probably attend both if I could, but I'll be out of town that weekend. C'est la vie, I spose. It's possible that I'll see a Grexer/M-Netter or two where I'm going, though.
Anyone from Grex is welcome to come to the M-Net 20th anniversary party, at Gallup Park on July 19 from 4-7 pm, but the fact that M-Net is having a party need not affect Grex's plans in any way.
resp 5 Where are you going?
I'm hearing a deafening lack of interest in a 2003 picnic.
If there is one, we will come.
I'll come.
What's the traditioinal time? 2 pm? I don't remember. Should go look in last year's Agora.
Okay i just talked to my mom about this last night and we will be there, weather pending.
Having seen it in the motd, I put it on my calendar at the start of this session. I expect to be there.
I'll bring the same contribution I always bring, in the years I'm in town for the Grex picnic: 30 hot dogs, and all the accessories: buns catsup mustard relish charcoal. I will endeavor to come up with some tofu dogs for the vegetarians but I make no promises.
Ew!!!!
Re #8: There's an apparent deafening lack of interest every year, but there always seems to be a good turnout nonetheless.
Okay lately i've been thinking about what to bring to the picnic besides cupcakes and something to drink. any suggestions ???
I like fruit or fruit juice. Or salad. It is very generous of you to want to bring three things. I hope we don't get poured on like last year.
Potato salad, chips, a big thing of water (& cups), a lighter in case Ken forgets his, etc. - haven't yet decided what to bring myself, though.
You should take some hashish.
I will bring the lighter that eskarina left behind when we were doing fireworks, as I have no use for it. Not sure what else I'll be able to bring.
scott, you'll be back in a^2 by then?
I'm heading back tomorrow.
Safe journey, Scott.
The picnic was fun. We should do it again next year, if not sooner.
AGHHAHAHA, YOU GOT RAINED ON!
Yup. We did. So?
I'm sorry I missed most of it, but it was nice putting a few more faces to names. The Frisbee with the Erics was fun :)
I'm sorry I missed it, familial obligations....
Who was the guy in the white tee playing frisbee? He is good. I missed the river. Next year someone please remember to bring it along, okay? I too had a nice time.
Apparently, that was one of the Erics, specifically ea, formerly known as hhrat. I've met him, but didn't recognise him. :(
I think she may have been referring to Dan Earle (login 'y'), but I'm not sure if she left before he showed up and started playing. Mary, you mean the guy in the shirt which said simply, "VEGAN" ?
The shirt was too far away to read. But he was playing the western-most position. He was able to not just place the frisbee but do it with those graceful high floaters. But you were all good at it. It requires a touch. I don't have it.
I had to leave about a quarter-to-four, but still managed to get a hot dog.
I wanted to show up, but got involved with something else eariler in the afternoon, so wasn't able to get down there until just after 6pm. Since I was pretty sure people wouldn't still be there, I opted to not even try.
I have fond memories of playing frisbee in the law quad with M-Netters after Friday Happy Hours at Dominicks. Kid chasing interferes with frisbee playing, at least until the kids are big enough to play.
Don't you gate it when rugrats get underfoot.
I wanted to come ,but had a Griffin who was having a love affair with his lima beans and painting grandma with them. It was messy. :-)
Fortunately Scott was around to get the fire going. I'm not very good at it without a big bottle of lighter fluid and I'd been talked into not using the lighter fluid this time. The rain wasn't an issue at all. Most folks were under the big tree and looked out and said, Gee, it's raining. Didn't even dampen the hot dog grill. A little while after the rain stopped, the sun returned and we continued on until about 6:30 pm, maybe another two hours past the rain. My recollections of who was there, augmented by some folks who were in party last night. Family groupings are listed together: mary maryeliz / qborthwi I / qborthwi II dcat ea scott bruin katie janc / valerie / arlo / kendra tpryan drew other steve / glenda / dewshine gelinas / Mrs. Gelinas, whose name I am always forgetting krj Grex's old landlord y balynce y & balynce's 3 friends bhelliom (& Loki) aruba / Carol
We skipped because I was taking a nap part of the time and because the fumes from barbecue fuel make me sick and I already had an overdose at the art fair. If next picnic will be fume free I would appreciate advance notice.
This time there was no lighter fluid used, and it was real charcoal, not briquettes. Just smelt like a wood fire. (We supplied the charcoal and don't use things like Kingsford and the ilk. We buy only natural wood charcoal.
I thought all charcoal was made from wood. shows what I know.
Yeah, but what happens to the wood after it is burnt into charcoal? Apparently, sometimes various things get added to the wood while it is being pressed into shape.

The no-lighter-fluid thing sort of sprung up at the last minute because STeve was bending my ear about it on Saturday night while we were at Art Fair, and because he offered his charcoal and home-made chimney. Try to remind me about this next year, Sindi, and maybe we can accomodate your wishes. Nobody ate the tofu hot dogs. I've got two leftover packages of tofu dogs in my fridge (Five per pack). Free to anyone I can deliver them to without a lot of trouble.
re #30-33 - I was one of the Frisbee Tossers during the first round of tossing, when it was just other, dcat, and myself. I didn't participate during the 2nd round of tossing.
Ken, it was kind of you to bring tofu hotdogs. I would not have eaten them anyway because I can't stand the taste of hot dogs (too salty and greasy). I will ask Jim if he is interested.
keesan prefers food with as little flavor as possible. ;>
Salty-greasy is not flavor. Jim says he can't stand the taste of hotdogs either.
I'll take those veggie dogs, Ken. Assuming there's a convenient way to transfer them, of course. :)
Salt enhances flavor.

That "greasy oil taste" is, of course, what it is all about, and makes millions for the purveyors.

Humans evolved to like fats - not only is some an essential dietary component, but they also provide energy and insulation. Their negative effects usually appear after early reproductive years and hence they help clear the population of useless old people.

Jim says to thank Ken for bringing the non-meat hotdogs. We were going to bring a large zucchini and barbecue that (and probably eat the whole thing). Peppers and tomatoes and mushrooms barbecue well (on a stick).

On a stick? How do you keep the garlic on?
I love veggie kabobs. I have a date tomorrow night - I might have to make those.
#57 reminds me of C.M.O.T. Dibbler in the book "Small Gods" where he's selling all manner of things "onna stick."

Cherry tomatos don't work so well on sandwiches. See

I was out of town. Sorry I had to miss the festivities.
Re #61: But less lethal.
Guess I logged in a little to late to learn about the picnic in time.
There's a blast from the past....
