#6 of 230 by sholmes on Wed Jun 25 03:59:35 2003:

COMPUTERS i meant .. the stapler fell on the enter key. :P

#7 of 230 by polytarp on Wed Jun 25 04:17:38 2003:

I saw naftee downtown, and Jon, who I believe read a Grex item once, uptown.

#8 of 230 by gelinas on Wed Jun 25 05:03:14 2003:

Was that anderyn who waved from the end of the aisle? I didn't see gelinas
(no mirrors), but I did see aruba.

#9 of 230 by other on Wed Jun 25 05:06:20 2003:

I saw mdw driving south on Fifth, as I was waiting at the light on
westbound Liberty on my way home tonight.

#10 of 230 by gelinas on Wed Jun 25 05:11:20 2003:

Which reminds me that I spotted maryeliz at TOP, during the movie.

I _thought_ I heard other's voice on the intercom after the movie, but
I don't really trust my voice-recognition system. (The announcement was a
request for people to clean up after themselves.)

#11 of 230 by dcat on Wed Jun 25 05:33:01 2003:

Saw dewshine & other at TOP, but missed maryeliz and anyone else who might've
been there. . .

#12 of 230 by polytarp on Wed Jun 25 05:33:47 2003:

Wow. I was reading this item, and then typed 0, and then dcat's response was
here WHEN IT WASN"T BEFORE! What timing! How cool!

#13 of 230 by other on Wed Jun 25 14:13:04 2003:

The voice you heard was that of Arwulf, not me.

#14 of 230 by dcat on Thu Jun 26 14:38:06 2003:

resp:11 - tues i *saw* maryeliz, but never made contact -- i was standing
two feet behind her for most of the movie, but we never spoke to each other.

weds. saw maryeliz & other. Might've been the first night i've been at TOP
and *not* spoken to dewshine.

#15 of 230 by carson on Thu Jun 26 18:49:20 2003:

(saw brown and pez yesterday. Bob installed his air conditioners that
afternoon, so I'd say I made a good call.) ;)

#16 of 230 by remmers on Thu Jun 26 19:39:16 2003:

I spotted anderyn and bru at Kroger a couple of weeks ago but forgot
to report it at the time.

#17 of 230 by kip on Thu Jun 26 20:13:18 2003:

I definitely have to get out more often.

#18 of 230 by gelinas on Fri Jun 27 03:31:35 2003:

I spoke to STeve and other at TOP this evening. A bit later, I saw krj, aruba
(and companion) and maryeliz.

#19 of 230 by dcat on Fri Jun 27 04:04:07 2003:

saw maryeliz & other, but no others, as i was talking to eskarina.

#20 of 230 by aruba on Fri Jun 27 05:03:00 2003:

I saw krj, steve, and maryeliz tonight; didn't spot gelinas.

things, too.

I saw aruba this afternoon at the AADL staff parking lot.

#23 of 230 by aruba on Sat Jun 28 03:57:18 2003:

And I spotted Kip, who was just driving out as I was turning around to go
back to the credit union to get some money.

#24 of 230 by carson on Sun Jun 29 05:10:34 2003:

(eskarina and I ambushed brown at his work.)

seat.

#28 of 230 by remmers on Mon Jun 30 11:07:15 2003:

At TOP last night, spotted other (see resp:26) and krj.

#29 of 230 by krj on Mon Jun 30 21:03:15 2003:

Hmm, a one-way spotting, I did not see the remmerses.

#30 of 230 by goose on Tue Jul 1 17:29:25 2003:

Spotted Jared and Smile at Bells Diner last Saturday.

#31 of 230 by katie on Tue Jul 1 21:49:58 2003:

I spotted bru and anderyn at Green Wood on Sat, where the three of us were
spotting Christine Lavin.

#32 of 230 by orinoco on Wed Jul 2 19:37:01 2003:

Snowth and I spotted other a few days ago. He was setting up a pavillion of
some sort downtown. I realized after we'd gone by that snowth and other
hadn't ever been introduced. So, uh, Eric, the woman who I was with when I
waved to you a few days back was snowth.

(Oh, and the beard is a nice touch.)

#33 of 230 by dcat on Wed Jul 2 19:42:47 2003:

I was also there. In fact, I believe I was standing next to other when you
guys walked by. In fact, I know he was -- he pointed you guys out to me...

#34 of 230 by orinoco on Wed Jul 2 19:57:43 2003:

Damn. Another Grexer I could've added to my life list...

#35 of 230 by dcat on Wed Jul 2 22:05:29 2003:

actually, Dan, I think we *have* met -- ea introduced us one of the first
nights of TOP. Or maybe he just pointed you out to me.

#36 of 230 by other on Sun Jul 6 05:14:31 2003:

I was spotted by cmgee, katie, krj, senna, melanief, and possibly others
today.

#37 of 230 by ea on Sun Jul 6 06:49:01 2003:

mostly unplanned spotting of eskarina, dcat, and jazz this evening.
Thought I might have spotted senna while dropping someone off at Power,
but I wasn't in a position to confirm this.

#38 of 230 by tsty on Sun Jul 6 07:28:27 2003:

#39 of 230 by krj on Mon Jul 7 05:43:25 2003:

katie, other, and senna spotted at my final Top of the Park trip,
on Saturday.

orinoco spotted at the Ark on Sunday, for John Roberts and Tony Barrand.
(Also associate grexer Carol, but I knew she would be there.)

#41 of 230 by ea on Tue Jul 8 02:03:51 2003:

#42 of 230 by ea on Tue Jul 8 02:04:17 2003:

(and STeve last night as well)

#43 of 230 by furs on Thu Jul 10 17:33:04 2003:

I spotted old mnetter xenon313 in Canton about 2 weeks ago. He was
with his wife (can't remember her name or id) and their two kids. He
wasn't too excited to talk to me, so I didn't stay long to chat.

#44 of 230 by carson on Thu Jul 10 19:03:23 2003:

(ah, Karyl. sadly, I can't remember his wife's name either. maybe it
was Steph?)

(not exactly spottings, but over the past couple of days, I've bumped
into brown, pez, and eskarina.)

#46 of 230 by jmsaul on Fri Jul 11 03:28:46 2003:

#47 of 230 by dcat on Fri Jul 11 03:59:58 2003:

ran into dewshine and a friend on the diag on my way to work tonight.

#48 of 230 by polytarp on Fri Jul 11 06:03:55 2003:

What exciting adventures came of it...?

#49 of 230 by goose on Fri Jul 11 19:45:09 2003:

Walked by marcus (I believe) next to the Maynard St. parking structure this
afternoon. He was engaged in converstaion with someone holding a Red Hat book
of somesort. I didn't want to interrupt, and I was in an anti social mood
so I just smiled as I walked by.

#50 of 230 by katie on Fri Jul 11 20:34:30 2003:

At TOP I spotted melanief, krj, and other (other, I hope I didn't
embarrass you *too* much).

#51 of 230 by other on Fri Jul 11 23:25:54 2003:

Not a bit. Should I have been embarassed?

#52 of 230 by ea on Sat Jul 12 14:11:18 2003:

spotted Senna (and Tracy) downtown last night.

#53 of 230 by katie on Sat Jul 12 18:35:10 2003:

(I made you show a set of body parts to melanief)

#54 of 230 by other on Sat Jul 12 19:29:18 2003:

Yes, well... the exhibitionist in me delighted in the opportunity.

#55 of 230 by mary on Sat Jul 12 20:21:05 2003:

I believe I spotted login Walter Cramer walking west on
Liberty, near 5th, at approximately 11:30 this morning.
I was in AD or I'd have said hello.

#56 of 230 by mary on Sat Jul 12 20:21:45 2003:

...login i, Walter Cramer...

#57 of 230 by i on Sun Jul 13 01:55:49 2003:

I was obviously very AD, since i didn't even see mary...mind probably
on too many errands that i needed to do before going to work (volunteer).

#58 of 230 by katie on Sun Jul 13 02:07:53 2003:

Spotted polygon and mjg downtown this evening.

#59 of 230 by mary on Sun Jul 13 13:19:04 2003:

AD is Afternoon Delight, I was inside. By the way, sir, you
have great walking posture.

#60 of 230 by i on Tue Jul 15 00:50:58 2003:

(Calls me "sir" & praises my walking posture??? Musta been some
other guy or AD's windows are *really* dirty...:)

#61 of 230 by polytarp on Tue Jul 15 06:08:58 2003:

Spotted naftee and jj3 in my house, the other day.

#62 of 230 by mynxcat on Tue Jul 15 18:17:15 2003:

who is jj3?

#63 of 230 by polytarp on Wed Jul 16 05:08:48 2003:

jj3? Well, hey.

#64 of 230 by ea on Thu Jul 17 03:28:31 2003:

I've been spotting dcat in a lot of various places lately ... while
doing TOP strike, at a friend's house watching a movie the other night,
and at an art fair info booth today

#65 of 230 by gelinas on Tue Jul 22 02:14:10 2003:

While I was at Quality 16 this evening, dea came up to say "hello". Then I
spotted mary at the corner of State and Liberty as I was turning right onto
Liberty; she arrived at the corner just about the time I got the green light.
I waved, but I don't think she saw me.

#66 of 230 by mary on Tue Jul 22 18:04:07 2003:

I was either on my way to or from Red Hawk. Nope, didn't see
you wave or I would have waved back. Thanks for not honking.
I hate honking. ;-)

#67 of 230 by scott on Tue Jul 22 18:26:12 2003:

Spotted lynne's parents near the SE corner of the Diag.

#68 of 230 by gelinas on Tue Jul 22 19:41:55 2003:

I think you were heading from the Red Hawk; we were headed towards it. :)

I hate honking, too. Horns are for warning of traffic hazards.

#69 of 230 by mooncat on Thu Jul 24 18:56:01 2003:

Forgot to mention it before, but a week ago today I spotted Gelinas at
the Sailing Club booth while the Beau and I were at Art Fair, would
have said hello- but Joe was talking to someone.

#70 of 230 by gelinas on Thu Jul 24 22:17:08 2003:

That's no excuse. We could have used the traffic. :)

Sorry I missed you. :(

#71 of 230 by scott on Sat Jul 26 02:10:54 2003:

Spotted cmcgee in Gallup Park around 5pm today.

#72 of 230 by gelinas on Sat Jul 26 04:33:45 2003:

Not really a 'spotting', since it was planned, but I met charcat yestereve.

#73 of 230 by other on Sat Jul 26 06:25:37 2003:

just met former grexer petra at a party i hadn't planned to attend

#74 of 230 by carson on Sat Jul 26 08:09:29 2003:

(spotted smiles while visiting jared.)

#75 of 230 by dcat on Mon Jul 28 19:23:07 2003:

Saw a guy walking into the Union wearing a Grex tshirt.

Said he wasn't a member though: "my girlfriend found the shirt", he said.

#76 of 230 by mynxcat on Mon Jul 28 19:25:23 2003:

"found the shirt" - ahem.

#77 of 230 by cmcgee on Tue Jul 29 12:57:41 2003:

I had a similar experience yesterday. Around 3, by the library, black Grex
T-shirt. I said "Grexer spotting" in a loud voice and the guy never even
looked at me. .

#78 of 230 by rcurl on Tue Jul 29 17:01:31 2003:

I gather you weren't arrested for disturbing the police....

#79 of 230 by dcat on Tue Jul 29 18:59:36 2003:

If you're in ann arbor, it was probably the same guy.

I'm going to assume Rane meant 'peace', not 'police'.

#80 of 230 by rcurl on Tue Jul 29 20:10:44 2003:

Actually I did, but what I wrote will do as well.... 8^}

#81 of 230 by gelinas on Wed Jul 30 04:36:52 2003:

Met clees in Frankenmuth today. Spotted scott when he showed up for dinner
with clees.

#82 of 230 by remmers on Wed Jul 30 12:30:56 2003:

Where'd y'all have dinner?

#83 of 230 by scott on Wed Jul 30 14:06:37 2003:

gelinal & aruba had to go back for the board meeting. Clees and I had dinner
at the Frankenmuth Brewery, a huge new brewpub on the northern edge of the
tourist district. Food & beer comparable to Grizzly Peak, I guess. Turned
out the decaf was regular, although I didn't figure that out until 2am or so.

#84 of 230 by scott on Wed Jul 30 14:07:21 2003:

One of the newbie sound techs at the Ark turned out to have recently met
goose.

#85 of 230 by goose on Wed Jul 30 20:10:03 2003:

Sat night probably...I forget her name....quite nice.

#86 of 230 by ea on Tue Aug 5 03:06:17 2003:

spotted a rock-painting Dewshine as I was driving to work this morning.
(unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to stop and say hi, I was running
a little late)

#87 of 230 by carson on Tue Aug 5 04:27:38 2003:

(not really a sighting, but eskarina and I were on an outing at Chicago's
Ed Debevic's this evening with a large group and were seated at the very
same tables that had hosted a GoG some five years previously.)

#88 of 230 by glenda on Tue Aug 5 13:32:52 2003:

STeve and I where spotted by focus at Red Lobster Saturday. He saw STeve's
radio antenna and asked about it, they then discovered the Grex/Mnet link.

#89 of 230 by remmers on Fri Aug 8 03:09:38 2003:

Last night, spotted jared & smiles enjoying ice cream at a sidewalk cafe
in downtown AA.

#90 of 230 by maryeliz on Fri Aug 8 21:48:56 2003:

Well about 15 minutes ago i spotted Damon Andre on an AATA bus. Kinda
suprised, because that is the last place i would think of running into him,
but it was still nice.

#91 of 230 by glenda on Sat Aug 9 05:55:41 2003:

That's because Mom is mean and insists on sleeping in on her day off rather
than getting up and driving him to work, I am also mean and make him come home
on his own as well. Poor boy, having such a mean mommy.

#92 of 230 by slynne on Sat Aug 9 12:29:20 2003:

It's not the making him go to and from work on his own that is mean, it
is the not buying him a car.

#93 of 230 by cmcgee on Sat Aug 9 14:30:44 2003:

Well, if he has a job, why can't he buy his own car? And insurance, and gas,
and oil, and, and, and. When my boys were old enough to drive, I offered a
free monthly bus pass for transportation if I weren't available. Beyond that,
they were on their own. Being normal young American males, they cajoled their
friends into rides, walked, biked, and did everything else they could to avoid
the bus. The cost of a car was far more than they were willing to spend (cut
into the games and CD purchases, for sure). If it wasn't worth their
time/money, it sure wasn't worth mine.

#94 of 230 by glenda on Sat Aug 9 16:43:43 2003:

He doesn't have a driver's license, his choice. I do pick him up if it is
raining (usually if he calls rain or not) and I have the car. He normally
doesn't call for a ride unless it is raining or he gets done work after the
bus stops. He works Fri, Sat, and Sun and often doesn't get done until
between 6 and 7.

#95 of 230 by jaklumen on Sat Aug 9 20:54:28 2003:

I dunno. That just seems bizarre to me-- I'd like to hear the
reasons. I'd think most teens and young adults would want the freedom
that comes with a driver's license and a car. It would get old being
a leash, so to speak, asking everyone else for rides or waiting on the
slow bus system (yes, the bus takes longer).

#96 of 230 by carson on Sat Aug 9 20:56:59 2003:

(you'd think that Jack had never lived in a city with good public
transportation and poor traffic circulation.)

(not really a sighting, but former Grexer Brian Place [bdp] found me
over on Classmates.com, then found me again on Friendster. if I didn't
know him better, I'd think I was celery.)

#97 of 230 by glenda on Sat Aug 9 21:03:09 2003:

He feels that cars are too dangerous (I think the idea of being responsible
for the control of one), they pollute, and the fact that he is 6'8" and still
growing means that he doesn't fit behind the wheel of most cars. Especially
ours. The thought of having to control a car while hunched over sideways with
my knees near my chin would make me leary of driving.

He prefers walking, using the bus, or getting a ride with friends. That may
change with time and finding a car he can actualy fit in comfortably. He has
made periodic noises about it would be easier on us, at times, if he had a
license, usually when we are sick and there isn't any food or Coke in the
house.

#98 of 230 by dcat on Sat Aug 9 21:11:55 2003:

When I was in high school, we only had one car, and I went to a school that
had next to no parking, and worked at a place that had less. Therefore, there
was nothing for me to drive, nowhere to go, and nowhere to park when I got
there. Thus I delayed taking driver's ed --- part of a class required to
graduate in the Ann Arbor Public Schools --- until senior year; taking instead
things like Architectural Drafting and Graphic Communications that were
substantially more useful & interesting to me.

I think at the time, parking passes at Huron were around $5, senior passes
$25 additional, and student bus fare 35c; but having a late class meant i got
a bus pass that made all busses free until 7pm, by which time I was home,
anyway.

#99 of 230 by slynne on Sun Aug 10 14:54:28 2003:

resp:93 - sorry, I forgot to put the ";-)" in resp:92.

#100 of 230 by jaklumen on Sun Aug 10 18:31:26 2003:

resp:96 No. I'm not urban at all.

#101 of 230 by mary on Sun Aug 10 19:32:27 2003:

Our son is 27 and has never had a car. He's never wanted one.
He figured out from watching other people that cars require
a lot of care and feeding and he'd rather spend his (few)
dollars on other things.

I expect when he gets his doctorate and a real job that
this will change. Maybe.

But my point is not everyone even wants a car. And
life is still good. You can be an independent adult
without one.

True, but !(college = dependent)

#104 of 230 by remmers on Mon Aug 11 01:24:04 2003:

And anyway, he's in graduate school - not college - and receives
the bulk of his financial support from his university.

#105 of 230 by polytarp on Mon Aug 11 01:39:09 2003:

REMMERS AND MARY HAVE A SON? I THOUGHT MARY WAS AGAINST S*X

#106 of 230 by anderyn on Mon Aug 11 15:01:55 2003:

I have never driven a car, save in driver's ed. Never wanted my license, which
is a good thing, given how poorly I see. Rhiannon does not have a license
either.

#107 of 230 by edina on Mon Aug 11 16:07:16 2003:

But could you if you had to? I think that is what is important to me. I
don't care if you have a car, want a car, what have you. I think it's
important to know how to operate one if you need to.

#108 of 230 by anderyn on Mon Aug 11 17:00:15 2003:

Nope. I couldn't. And, again, that's safer for the whole world. :-) (I have
such bad eyes that I would not be able to do it without an accident, more than
likely.)

#109 of 230 by lynne on Mon Aug 11 18:12:17 2003:

Hmmm. My parents passive-aggressively discouraged me pretty strongly from
all thins driving-related while living at home. I finally have a car now
--bought it two years ago--and it made an incredibly large difference in my
general state of happiness. The sense of independence is well worth the
cost of insurance and occasional repair--even though I *could* live without
it, technically speaking.

#110 of 230 by edina on Mon Aug 11 19:10:37 2003:

So could I. But I too like the freedom. And Twila, I'm sorry. I'd hate to
be cut at the knees like that.

#111 of 230 by scott on Mon Aug 11 20:37:28 2003:

Spotted orinoco in Eastern Accents around lunchtime today, but somehow he
managed to buy his food and leave before I could say hello.

#112 of 230 by jaklumen on Tue Aug 12 00:42:18 2003:

resp:101 Maybe. Some jobs want you to have a car-- or at least
transportation they will believe to be dependable.

#113 of 230 by jmsaul on Tue Aug 12 02:35:57 2003:

Re #110: I understand what you're saying, but I respect Twila a lot for
realizing that her lack of peripheral vision would endanger

I have a car, which I bought several years ago when commuting from Ann Arbor
to the Detroit suburbs. In the last few months, I've had a destination that
was much easier to get to by car than by bike or public transit, so I've been
using it a lot, but I think that's about to change. In the 2.5 years before
that, I used to go weeks at a time without driving it, pretty much only using
it for out of town trips. I don't really like driving all that much, and most
of the time I'd much rather sit on a train and get where I'm going, rather
than spending more time sitting in a traffic jam, and then having to spend
a long time looking for a $20 per day parking space.

It is nice having the car so I can use it without having to plan in advance
when I want to. If it were to die, it would probably be cheaper to rent a
car when I needed it, but I might be tempted to buy a new one anyway.

Those I know who live in neighborhoods where parking is difficult have mostly
gotten rid of the cars they had when they moved in, declaring finding parking
to have been more trouble than it was worth.

However, if you think AATA's bad, you haven't dealt with SMART (gawd, I

actually has a better setup for its size.

I found it amazing that there's actually people out there that /can/
drive, but choose not to. But from what I've read, it's those that
have other means of transport that scoff at driving. They'd change
their tunes reeeal quick if it was the only way they could get around.

I can understand some people living in San Francisco (where I am at the
moment) choosing not to drive: with both the BART rail and the MUNI
bus/trolley/interurban systems reaching almost everywhere in the city,
it is pretty easy to get around without a car (unless you live on the top of
some hills). It has made me wonder why Detroit can't have as good a system,
though I expect the answer is that Detroit is so economically depressed.

From what I've heard it's because of the auto-makers. After all, this
is the auto capital of the nation. It wouldn't look good to have all
those pesky busses running around when you've got car dealers up the
whaazoo. It's mostly political, but partly economic, too.

Also, according to one of the bus drivers, SMART is one of the last of
the large metropolitan bus systems that still depends a great deal on
federal funds to keep things running...such as it is.

Re #127: There are multiple reasons:

- Incompetant and corrupt government in Detroit and Wayne County.
- Detroit doesn't have the tax base to fund it, and the suburbs aren't
willing to chip in for something they see as mostly benefiting poor
people in Detroit. (Some people have tried to spin this as racism.)
- Detroit has had urban decay for so long that a lot of people are no
longer commuting from the suburbs inward; they're commuting crosswise,
from suburb to suburb. This makes it hard to get enough rider density
  on any given route.
- Public attitude. Mass transit has been so bad for so long, people feel
it's a money pit and will never be any good.

"they're commuting crosswise, from suburb to suburb"

This is not because of Detroit's urban decay. It is a phenomenon in almost
all large American cities at the end of the 20th century. It is one of the
most vexing transit planning problems, because the density of housing in these
suburbs makes transit unworkable.

Ann Arbor itself is barely dense enough for transit to be financially
feasible. Feasible does not mean self-supporting. About 1/3 of Ann Arbor's
transit cost is paid for by Federal subsidies.

re 132:
It seems to me that this is a problem where transit needs to lead the
way, rather than figure out how to follow. In San Francisco and New York,
the downtown areas are a real pain to drive to, but they're still *the*
convenient location for any business trying to target more than a single
neighborhood. This is because they are the areas where public transit goes
to from everywhere else, and getting between any other two points likely
involves going through the downtowns. In contrast, in places like Ann Arbor
or Detroit, the downtowns are treated just as places where it's hard to park.

The effect of enforcing those laws is still the same, though. And it's easy
to see that the priorities are skewed to provide maximum benefit to
corporations. Hundreds of illegal immigrants get into the U.S. every day to
provide cheap labor, but try to bring too much of some grocery item across
the border and you get nailed. I expect soon bringing prescription drugs
across the border will become illegal, to prop up high U.S. drug prices, as
well.

#203 of 230 by scg on Thu Sep 11 04:12:08 2003:

Wait a minute, so legalizing pot would be bad because extra police resources
(presumably not freed up by not having to bust non-driving pot smokers) would
be needed to bust stoned drivers, but alcohol being legal isn't bad because
alcohol is legal?

It's certainly possible to have an extremely simplistic moral code and believe
that what's illegal is wrong and what's legal is ok, but deciding what should
be legal or illegal requires a bit more thought than that.

#204 of 230 by bru on Thu Sep 11 12:14:28 2003:

Legalizing pot would make my job easier. But while we have one legal drug
that causes thousands of deaths and injuries each year, why do you think
adding another would make things better?

If I ruled the world, anyone caught drunk driving would get a ban on driving
for life. The problem with all drugs, and I do mean ALL drugs, is that they
reduce your ability to make rational decisions. They give you an excuse when
you make a mistake. "Hey, sorry dude. I was stoned." (drunk, high, wasted...
take your pick.) You rationalize the result.

We cannot eliminate all drugs, but lets trynot to create another legal
loophole.

#205 of 230 by other on Thu Sep 11 13:10:44 2003:

The fact that alcohol is legal not only does not legitimize it as an
excuse for breaking laws, but the trend has been strongly toward
disallowing it as an excuse in most other contexts as well. So, how does
decriminialization of moderate use of another recreational drug (one with
demonstrably far fewer adverse ill effects of moderate usage) create
loopholes?

If you ruled the world, you'd be overthrown the first time you tried to
establish a policy of any sort because you apparently do not understand
even the basic concept of logical consistency.

who said law was logical? Name me a single logical government.

And I didn't say was a legitimate excuse, only that people rationalize and
use it as an excuse. I do not see the marijuana as have far fewer adverse
ill effects. You are just closing your eyes to the damage.

Please please PLEASE take the drug discussion out of the Spotted Grexer
item. Please? I really don't want to forget this item.

(Not that it really matters to me; I know I'll never spot a Grexer
accidently --- but I do enjoy reading about what happens in Ann Arbor.)

Two points:

- Alcohol causes more economic damage than *all illegal drugs combined.*
The reason this fact does not get more attention is that alcohol is a
big business (and so is the drug war.)

- In spite of what you've seen in anti-drug ads, most studies that have
looked into the matter have found that alcohol affects judgement and
driving ability *more* than pot. Not that driving while stoned is a
good idea, but people seem more able to judge the degree to which
they're impaired while high than they do while drunk.

I'd say that if there's any potential problem here, it's the lack of a
test for THC that's equivalent to a breathalyzer test for alcohol
impairment. But I suspect one would be developed quickly if there were
demand for it.

I also enjoy reading about spottings of Grexers by other Grexers,
though I rarely spot other Grexers myself, and would appreciate it if
the drug discussion could move to another item.

(Sorry to contribute to the drug discussion, but just a note on the
anti-marijuana ads. The first one I saw depicted a young pregnant teen, and
the message was pot impairs judgement. That didn't seem to have much of a
effect on me besides irritate me no end. Alcohol's a bigger culprit I think
of judgement impairment. The next ad's message as you shouldn't have pot and
drive. Again, my reaction was if that's your argumnent to illegalize pot, then
maybe you should start with alcohol. The last ad I've seen has made a lot of
impact. It shows a boy talking about his brother who's on pot and tells us
how "he never dropped out of school, he never got into fights, he never had
an accident" and then shows his brother stoned on a couch in the basement,
and the boy ending with "in fact, he never did anything". I think if there's
a message that needs to go out more about pot than "impairing judgement" and
"dangers of pot and driving", it's this one. Pot may be a great entertainment
drug, and I have no objection to it being used that way. But, too many people
tend to rely on it for a "pick-me-up" and it's this type of use that needs
to be targetted, and people should be made aware of the effects of continuous
pot use, molre than the momentary impairment of judgement and car accidents.)

You may now go back to the regular item.

Here is a message to all the folks who come here and say things
like: "Please take this to another item people" "This is the blah blah
item not the drug item, please make another item for your drift"

It will never happen. If you ever find that drift in an item is
bothering you and you want to move the discussion to another item, YOU
have to create the other item and then *maybe* the dicussion will move.

So, I have created an item for the drug discussion. Let's move it.
Thanks.

Spotted davel (semi-expectedly) at the Lighthouse Wednesday night
open mic night in Milan. He played hammered dulcimer, I played
ragtime piano.

#222 of 230 by goose on Thu Sep 18 13:19:19 2003:

I think I spotted mdw near the WCC campus. If it was him he was in a gold
Volvo.

#223 of 230 by slynne on Thu Sep 18 13:29:40 2003:

I love the hammered dulcimer. It it really fun to watch folks play
those.

#224 of 230 by remmers on Thu Sep 18 15:39:11 2003:

And davel plays a pretty good hammered dulcimer. I was surprised at
the volume of sound that comes out of one of those things.

#225 of 230 by glenda on Thu Sep 18 23:20:18 2003:

MDW does own a gold Volvo.

#226 of 230 by ea on Fri Sep 19 13:28:44 2003:

I'm not sure if this counts as a sighting, but I "spotted" polygon on
another website I read, responding to a post someone had made about the
Political Graveyard.

#227 of 230 by carson on Fri Sep 19 14:07:18 2003:

(strangely enough, I think I dreamt last night about having actually
spotted Grexers, as opposed to my usual habit of showing up in their
natural habitat.)

#228 of 230 by dcat on Fri Sep 19 15:35:48 2003:

Ran into orinoco on the way out of our respective classes yesterday. Of the
half-dozen times we've run into each other on campus the last couple weeks,
it was possibly the first time it wasn't in a computer lab . . . so of course
we went directly to a computer lab. . .
