DID YOU SEE SOMEONE TODAY THAT USES GREX OR IRC OR COMPUTERS?230 responses total.
I saw polytarp today.
This response has been erased.
I saw bruin, anderyn, krj, and gelinas tonight at The Ark.
r 2 Yeah sure
I saw all my colleagues, all use CO
COMPUTERS i meant .. the stapler fell on the enter key. :P
I saw naftee downtown, and Jon, who I believe read a Grex item once, uptown.
Was that anderyn who waved from the end of the aisle? I didn't see gelinas (no mirrors), but I did see aruba.
I saw mdw driving south on Fifth, as I was waiting at the light on westbound Liberty on my way home tonight.
Which reminds me that I spotted maryeliz at TOP, during the movie. I _thought_ I heard other's voice on the intercom after the movie, but I don't really trust my voice-recognition system. (The announcement was a request for people to clean up after themselves.)
Saw dewshine & other at TOP, but missed maryeliz and anyone else who might've been there. . .
Wow. I was reading this item, and then typed 0, and then dcat's response was here WHEN IT WASN"T BEFORE! What timing! How cool!
The voice you heard was that of Arwulf, not me.
resp:11 - tues i *saw* maryeliz, but never made contact -- i was standing two feet behind her for most of the movie, but we never spoke to each other. weds. saw maryeliz & other. Might've been the first night i've been at TOP and *not* spoken to dewshine.
(saw brown and pez yesterday. Bob installed his air conditioners that afternoon, so I'd say I made a good call.) ;)
I spotted anderyn and bru at Kroger a couple of weeks ago but forgot to report it at the time.
I definitely have to get out more often.
I spoke to STeve and other at TOP this evening. A bit later, I saw krj, aruba (and companion) and maryeliz.
saw maryeliz & other, but no others, as i was talking to eskarina.
I saw krj, steve, and maryeliz tonight; didn't spot gelinas.
I met mspiggy at her place of employment this afternoon. Actually bought some things, too.
I saw aruba this afternoon at the AADL staff parking lot.
And I spotted Kip, who was just driving out as I was turning around to go back to the credit union to get some money.
(eskarina and I ambushed brown at his work.)
saw katie yesterday at greenwood.
Saw remmers and mary, and aruba and Carol tonight.
saw other, but apparently he didn't see me either time he walked past my aisle seat.
At TOP last night, spotted other (see resp:26) and krj.
Hmm, a one-way spotting, I did not see the remmerses.
Spotted Jared and Smile at Bells Diner last Saturday.
I spotted bru and anderyn at Green Wood on Sat, where the three of us were spotting Christine Lavin.
Snowth and I spotted other a few days ago. He was setting up a pavillion of some sort downtown. I realized after we'd gone by that snowth and other hadn't ever been introduced. So, uh, Eric, the woman who I was with when I waved to you a few days back was snowth. (Oh, and the beard is a nice touch.)
I was also there. In fact, I believe I was standing next to other when you guys walked by. In fact, I know he was -- he pointed you guys out to me...
Damn. Another Grexer I could've added to my life list...
actually, Dan, I think we *have* met -- ea introduced us one of the first nights of TOP. Or maybe he just pointed you out to me.
I was spotted by cmgee, katie, krj, senna, melanief, and possibly others today.
mostly unplanned spotting of eskarina, dcat, and jazz this evening. Thought I might have spotted senna while dropping someone off at Power, but I wasn't in a position to confirm this.
firday, mom and i were right behind polygon's car as he turned left into hiw drivwaye ... i flashed my lights and honked the horn bujt he was mor interested in not getting hit by oncomming cars .. good for polydude. just thought you'd like to know.
katie, other, and senna spotted at my final Top of the Park trip, on Saturday. orinoco spotted at the Ark on Sunday, for John Roberts and Tony Barrand. (Also associate grexer Carol, but I knew she would be there.)
Re #39: Talk about passive voice...
spotted other, dcat, dewshine and senna at TOP last night and then followed that up with a mostly-planned spotting of other, dcat, and dewshine today
(and STeve last night as well)
I spotted old mnetter xenon313 in Canton about 2 weeks ago. He was with his wife (can't remember her name or id) and their two kids. He wasn't too excited to talk to me, so I didn't stay long to chat.
(ah, Karyl. sadly, I can't remember his wife's name either. maybe it was Steph?) (not exactly spottings, but over the past couple of days, I've bumped into brown, pez, and eskarina.)
This response has been erased.
Re #44: Her name's Steph, yeah. Karyl's kind of shy in person, I've found.
ran into dewshine and a friend on the diag on my way to work tonight.
What exciting adventures came of it...?
Walked by marcus (I believe) next to the Maynard St. parking structure this afternoon. He was engaged in converstaion with someone holding a Red Hat book of somesort. I didn't want to interrupt, and I was in an anti social mood so I just smiled as I walked by.
At TOP I spotted melanief, krj, and other (other, I hope I didn't embarrass you *too* much).
Not a bit. Should I have been embarassed?
spotted Senna (and Tracy) downtown last night.
(I made you show a set of body parts to melanief)
Yes, well... the exhibitionist in me delighted in the opportunity.
I believe I spotted login Walter Cramer walking west on Liberty, near 5th, at approximately 11:30 this morning. I was in AD or I'd have said hello.
...login i, Walter Cramer...
I was obviously very AD, since i didn't even see mary...mind probably on too many errands that i needed to do before going to work (volunteer).
Spotted polygon and mjg downtown this evening.
AD is Afternoon Delight, I was inside. By the way, sir, you have great walking posture.
(Calls me "sir" & praises my walking posture??? Musta been some other guy or AD's windows are *really* dirty...:)
Spotted naftee and jj3 in my house, the other day.
who is jj3?
jj3? Well, hey.
I've been spotting dcat in a lot of various places lately ... while doing TOP strike, at a friend's house watching a movie the other night, and at an art fair info booth today
While I was at Quality 16 this evening, dea came up to say "hello". Then I spotted mary at the corner of State and Liberty as I was turning right onto Liberty; she arrived at the corner just about the time I got the green light. I waved, but I don't think she saw me.
I was either on my way to or from Red Hawk. Nope, didn't see you wave or I would have waved back. Thanks for not honking. I hate honking. ;-)
Spotted lynne's parents near the SE corner of the Diag.
I think you were heading from the Red Hawk; we were headed towards it. :) I hate honking, too. Horns are for warning of traffic hazards.
Forgot to mention it before, but a week ago today I spotted Gelinas at the Sailing Club booth while the Beau and I were at Art Fair, would have said hello- but Joe was talking to someone.
That's no excuse. We could have used the traffic. :) Sorry I missed you. :(
Spotted cmcgee in Gallup Park around 5pm today.
Not really a 'spotting', since it was planned, but I met charcat yestereve.
just met former grexer petra at a party i hadn't planned to attend
(spotted smiles while visiting jared.)
Saw a guy walking into the Union wearing a Grex tshirt. Said he wasn't a member though: "my girlfriend found the shirt", he said.
"found the shirt" - ahem.
I had a similar experience yesterday. Around 3, by the library, black Grex T-shirt. I said "Grexer spotting" in a loud voice and the guy never even looked at me. .
I gather you weren't arrested for disturbing the police....
If you're in ann arbor, it was probably the same guy. I'm going to assume Rane meant 'peace', not 'police'.
Actually I did, but what I wrote will do as well.... 8^}
Met clees in Frankenmuth today. Spotted scott when he showed up for dinner with clees.
Where'd y'all have dinner?
gelinal & aruba had to go back for the board meeting. Clees and I had dinner at the Frankenmuth Brewery, a huge new brewpub on the northern edge of the tourist district. Food & beer comparable to Grizzly Peak, I guess. Turned out the decaf was regular, although I didn't figure that out until 2am or so.
One of the newbie sound techs at the Ark turned out to have recently met goose.
Sat night probably...I forget her name....quite nice.
spotted a rock-painting Dewshine as I was driving to work this morning. (unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to stop and say hi, I was running a little late)
(not really a sighting, but eskarina and I were on an outing at Chicago's Ed Debevic's this evening with a large group and were seated at the very same tables that had hosted a GoG some five years previously.)
STeve and I where spotted by focus at Red Lobster Saturday. He saw STeve's radio antenna and asked about it, they then discovered the Grex/Mnet link.
Last night, spotted jared & smiles enjoying ice cream at a sidewalk cafe in downtown AA.
Well about 15 minutes ago i spotted Damon Andre on an AATA bus. Kinda suprised, because that is the last place i would think of running into him, but it was still nice.
That's because Mom is mean and insists on sleeping in on her day off rather than getting up and driving him to work, I am also mean and make him come home on his own as well. Poor boy, having such a mean mommy.
It's not the making him go to and from work on his own that is mean, it is the not buying him a car.
Well, if he has a job, why can't he buy his own car? And insurance, and gas, and oil, and, and, and. When my boys were old enough to drive, I offered a free monthly bus pass for transportation if I weren't available. Beyond that, they were on their own. Being normal young American males, they cajoled their friends into rides, walked, biked, and did everything else they could to avoid the bus. The cost of a car was far more than they were willing to spend (cut into the games and CD purchases, for sure). If it wasn't worth their time/money, it sure wasn't worth mine.
He doesn't have a driver's license, his choice. I do pick him up if it is raining (usually if he calls rain or not) and I have the car. He normally doesn't call for a ride unless it is raining or he gets done work after the bus stops. He works Fri, Sat, and Sun and often doesn't get done until between 6 and 7.
I dunno. That just seems bizarre to me-- I'd like to hear the reasons. I'd think most teens and young adults would want the freedom that comes with a driver's license and a car. It would get old being a leash, so to speak, asking everyone else for rides or waiting on the slow bus system (yes, the bus takes longer).
(you'd think that Jack had never lived in a city with good public transportation and poor traffic circulation.) (not really a sighting, but former Grexer Brian Place [bdp] found me over on Classmates.com, then found me again on Friendster. if I didn't know him better, I'd think I was celery.)
He feels that cars are too dangerous (I think the idea of being responsible for the control of one), they pollute, and the fact that he is 6'8" and still growing means that he doesn't fit behind the wheel of most cars. Especially ours. The thought of having to control a car while hunched over sideways with my knees near my chin would make me leary of driving. He prefers walking, using the bus, or getting a ride with friends. That may change with time and finding a car he can actualy fit in comfortably. He has made periodic noises about it would be easier on us, at times, if he had a license, usually when we are sick and there isn't any food or Coke in the house.
When I was in high school, we only had one car, and I went to a school that had next to no parking, and worked at a place that had less. Therefore, there was nothing for me to drive, nowhere to go, and nowhere to park when I got there. Thus I delayed taking driver's ed --- part of a class required to graduate in the Ann Arbor Public Schools --- until senior year; taking instead things like Architectural Drafting and Graphic Communications that were substantially more useful & interesting to me. I think at the time, parking passes at Huron were around $5, senior passes $25 additional, and student bus fare 35c; but having a late class meant i got a bus pass that made all busses free until 7pm, by which time I was home, anyway.
resp:93 - sorry, I forgot to put the ";-)" in resp:92.
resp:96 No. I'm not urban at all.
Our son is 27 and has never had a car. He's never wanted one. He figured out from watching other people that cars require a lot of care and feeding and he'd rather spend his (few) dollars on other things. I expect when he gets his doctorate and a real job that this will change. Maybe. But my point is not everyone even wants a car. And life is still good. You can be an independent adult without one.
This response has been erased.
True, but !(college = dependent)
And anyway, he's in graduate school - not college - and receives the bulk of his financial support from his university.
REMMERS AND MARY HAVE A SON? I THOUGHT MARY WAS AGAINST S*X
I have never driven a car, save in driver's ed. Never wanted my license, which is a good thing, given how poorly I see. Rhiannon does not have a license either.
But could you if you had to? I think that is what is important to me. I don't care if you have a car, want a car, what have you. I think it's important to know how to operate one if you need to.
Nope. I couldn't. And, again, that's safer for the whole world. :-) (I have such bad eyes that I would not be able to do it without an accident, more than likely.)
Hmmm. My parents passive-aggressively discouraged me pretty strongly from all thins driving-related while living at home. I finally have a car now --bought it two years ago--and it made an incredibly large difference in my general state of happiness. The sense of independence is well worth the cost of insurance and occasional repair--even though I *could* live without it, technically speaking.
So could I. But I too like the freedom. And Twila, I'm sorry. I'd hate to be cut at the knees like that.
Spotted orinoco in Eastern Accents around lunchtime today, but somehow he managed to buy his food and leave before I could say hello.
resp:101 Maybe. Some jobs want you to have a car-- or at least transportation they will believe to be dependable.
Re #110: I understand what you're saying, but I respect Twila a lot for
realizing that her lack of peripheral vision would endanger
herself and others if she drove. In her case, from what she's
said, it's the only responsible choice.
I CAN{T BELIEVE I WAS THE ONE WHO ENTERED THIS ITEM LOL.
LOL
Re 113 I respect it too. I'm just glad I have good eyes.
Lol.
I have a car, which I bought several years ago when commuting from Ann Arbor to the Detroit suburbs. In the last few months, I've had a destination that was much easier to get to by car than by bike or public transit, so I've been using it a lot, but I think that's about to change. In the 2.5 years before that, I used to go weeks at a time without driving it, pretty much only using it for out of town trips. I don't really like driving all that much, and most of the time I'd much rather sit on a train and get where I'm going, rather than spending more time sitting in a traffic jam, and then having to spend a long time looking for a $20 per day parking space. It is nice having the car so I can use it without having to plan in advance when I want to. If it were to die, it would probably be cheaper to rent a car when I needed it, but I might be tempted to buy a new one anyway. Those I know who live in neighborhoods where parking is difficult have mostly gotten rid of the cars they had when they moved in, declaring finding parking to have been more trouble than it was worth.

Like Twila, my eyeballs are rather shot. In fact, I'm classified "Legally Blind" without my glasses. Even with glasses, it's not good enough, so I can empathize with what she has to deal with. However, if you think AATA's bad, you haven't dealt with SMART (gawd, I hate that name!). They suck BIG TIME! I did some checking and AATA actually has a better setup for its size. I found it amazing that there's actually people out there that /can/ drive, but choose not to. But from what I've read, it's those that have other means of transport that scoff at driving. They'd change their tunes reeeal quick if it was the only way they could get around.
I can understand some people living in San Francisco (where I am at the moment) choosing not to drive: with both the BART rail and the MUNI bus/trolley/interurban systems reaching almost everywhere in the city, it is pretty easy to get around without a car (unless you live on the top of some hills). It has made me wonder why Detroit can't have as good a system, though I expect the answer is that Detroit is so economically depressed.
This response has been erased.
From what I've heard it's because of the auto-makers. After all, this is the auto capital of the nation. It wouldn't look good to have all those pesky busses running around when you've got car dealers up the whaazoo. It's mostly political, but partly economic, too. Also, according to one of the bus drivers, SMART is one of the last of the large metropolitan bus systems that still depends a great deal on federal funds to keep things running...such as it is.
This response has been erased.
I've heard that's been debunked. There *were* many cities where the automakers bought out and scrapped trolly lines so they could sell buses instead, but they never tried to discourage buses in Detroit.
(If buses were such a losing proposition for GM, they wouldn't manufacture so many of them.)
This response has been erased.
If one looks at Detroit & Wayne County's long histories of extremely capable, honest, efficient, and dedicated-to-the-long-term-public-good governments, then one *might* be able to understand why mass transit runs rather short of reasonable expectations in that part of Michigan...
This response has been erased.
Re #127: There are multiple reasons: - Incompetant and corrupt government in Detroit and Wayne County. - Detroit doesn't have the tax base to fund it, and the suburbs aren't willing to chip in for something they see as mostly benefiting poor people in Detroit. (Some people have tried to spin this as racism.) - Detroit has had urban decay for so long that a lot of people are no longer commuting from the suburbs inward; they're commuting crosswise, from suburb to suburb. This makes it hard to get enough rider density on any given route. - Public attitude. Mass transit has been so bad for so long, people feel it's a money pit and will never be any good.
This response has been erased.
"they're commuting crosswise, from suburb to suburb" This is not because of Detroit's urban decay. It is a phenomenon in almost all large American cities at the end of the 20th century. It is one of the most vexing transit planning problems, because the density of housing in these suburbs makes transit unworkable. Ann Arbor itself is barely dense enough for transit to be financially feasible. Feasible does not mean self-supporting. About 1/3 of Ann Arbor's transit cost is paid for by Federal subsidies.

(Wha' happen to the grexer spotting thread?)
Drift, drift, drift...
Moments ago, I saw srw walking by the Our Town Deli at Main & Liberty (I'm in here having dinner & internet).
Hey, almost forgot to annouce this. I'm going to be visiting my sister in Berkeley, CA for Labor Day weekend, and I'll have a couple days during the week when I could meet some local Grexers.
Saw scott at Murfin and Plymouth on his recumbant, but he didn't hear me call his name on Tuesday about noon.
What's a recumbant?
A funny looking bike, slightly misspelled. :)
http://www.visionrecumbents.com/
Oh, I've seen those. Saw a guy riding one when I was at the Dream Cruise. Looks comfortable.
I've seen them occasionally, too. Some day I'd like to try riding one.
Yes, they're very nice. Got one because of a bad shoulder.
Spotted dadroc yesteray at the post office.
I saw a recumbant this morning on the highway ramp. I still have yet to try one out.
re 137:
I'll have visiting relatives for part of that weekend, but should also
have a day or two free. Give me a call when you know what your schedule is
like.
Had dinner with munkey, kornnut, and anubolic tonight.
re 132:
It seems to me that this is a problem where transit needs to lead the
way, rather than figure out how to follow. In San Francisco and New York,
the downtown areas are a real pain to drive to, but they're still *the*
convenient location for any business trying to target more than a single
neighborhood. This is because they are the areas where public transit goes
to from everywhere else, and getting between any other two points likely
involves going through the downtowns. In contrast, in places like Ann Arbor
or Detroit, the downtowns are treated just as places where it's hard to park.
Why wasn't munkey in the group picture?
Wild guess: Because she took the picture?
I know that, but why didn't they have someone else take the picture?? I want momo in the picture!!
Two pictures were taken, one by Mike that included Morena, and one by Morena that included Mike.
Momo, put up the other picture with you in it.
Spotted slynne on the EMU campus today.
happy birthday yesterday slynne!
Had dinner with scg while in Berkeley.
Any pictures?
(probably not. Steve's undercover DEA.) (whoops.)
Spotted keesan & Jim, but I was confused because they were in a car.
I saw mta and baby jack on Saturday at someone's house (it was an ann arbor baby clothing exchange, the first one i'd been to). I saw krj and arabella yesterday.
Spotted other in front of Big City / Small World Cafe. He'd just gotten back fom the month-long bike tour.
resp:153 Yup, remmers was the only grexer I saw on my birthday this year. I was a bit hung over due to deciding the night before that 35 was a year best met drunk. remmers was very polite and didnt say, "Geez, you look like shit" or anything like that :) You can pretty much always count on remmers to be polite. resp:154 Thanks Dude
Spotted scott, just a few minutes after arriving back in Ann Arbor after a month long absence. Spotted happypup (formerly ivynymph) at her home in Austin, TX. It was planned, though.
Re #161: You didn't look any different than usual. Can I conclude that you are always drunk or hung over? (I'd have wished you happy birthday if I'd known. Please accept my belated congrats (he said politely).)
HAHA. I might always *look* hungover but I dont drink too often these days so I am usually stone cold sober.
WHY DON"T YOU SMOKE POT< SLYNNE?!
I do smoke pot.
O. Good luck.
psst! give me the nam4e and address of your supplier...
YEAH< BRU WANTS TO BUY SOME DOPE.
If Bruce is serious, if he really is interested in the name, so he can turn them in.....*if* so, he has dropped to a new low in my book.
psst! i think he's trying to make a joke...
Hey! You never know what some people are willing to tell you? If you want to give me the name of a drug dealer, I am more than willing to pass it on to the appropriate people. If you know f someone bringing dope across the border adn want them stopped, drop me a line and I'll see what I can do to have them intercepted. Goose, it is illegal to smoke pot. It is dangerous adn it does indeed support the terrorists who want to destroy this country. The same pipelines that bring in drugs bring in other illegal goods, people, and weapons. So yeah. I want to arrest these people. It is what they pay me to do.
Bruce, please show me some evidence that a person in Ann Arbor buying pot support terrorism. I don't smoke pot, I know folks who have however. Based on my conversations with them most of the pot in the SE Michigan area is grown here...by non terrorist people....so again please provide me some evidence......
Yeah, and buying alcohol helps support the mafia. Sure.
Aaargh. this IS the spot-the-grexer item. Can we move discussions of illegal drugs to somewhere else?
so why de we keep busting people brining in BC Bud every day at the bridge and tunnel? As I said, they use the same pipelines. you got a guy convicted three years ago of bringin in 7 pounds of pot, and found driving a truck with 40 AK-47 disguised as hardware. He smuggles pot ad!tel anderyn I cannot find the number... ns. We find a container containing Cocaine, methamphetamine, and plastic explosives. Coincidence? If you buy narcotics, some portion of that purchase price supports a terrorist in columbi or peru. He may be a Shining Path extremist trather than el Queda, but you can bet at some point one or the other is going to kill someone with a weapon you helped buy.
Is that twilae over there?
I think it is more likely to be the other way around. Smuggling guns and explosives is extra dangerous and I'm sure extra remunerative: pot and cocaine is chump change by comparison, and is probably done on the side for extra spending money and because if you are busted for guns and explosives nobody will give much of a hoot about the drugs.
<really wishes bru would take less time ranting about possibly imagined terrorist links and more time checking his typing and spelling. by mutilating the language in non-systematic ways, you are supporting the downfall of the US.>
<chuckle>
If you really think that sales of (insert your drug of choice here) help suppoort terrorism, here's something you can do to help foil those nasty terrorists: Work towards legalization. Seriously, if marijuana were legal in the US, you can bet that completely legitimate corporations would drop the bottom out of the market and terrorists wouldn't make any money from it any more.
yeah! then all we gotta do is hire more cops and arrest those who drive under the influence. Why is it the same people who promote drug use get all paranoid at the idea of a government supplied drug like soma...
Maybe we could retask some of those cops who search cars for drugs at the border.
bruse, you are an idiot. the computer industry does more to (unwittingly) support terrorism than all of the potgrowing crackers up in b.c. combined do...if you are really against the support of terrorist groups you, and you alone, should stop using a computer. take a bath, smelly christian.
Huh? I've never heard of soma. And I've particularly never heard someone on this system getting all paranoid about it. Anyway, if your main argument is needing to arrest more people that are driving under the influence, then you're *really* grasping at straws.
What about Toledo Windowbox or Cheddar WoWWie? Homegrown
helping someone whose job was taken away by a foriegn job.
So....
Bussinesses that use overseas labor (service or manufactoring)
are supporting terrorism!
(Is this still the humor item?)
yeah...but it's no longer *funny ha-ha*
[(it never was the humor item.)] re #185: (soma is a muscle relaxant.)
We really should move this to another item....but I'm still waiting for that evidence Bruce. On topic: I saw user cme, Evan Corcoran, over the weekend. We were going to hook up with tod, but no one had a car to get anywhere. He;s on his way back to Poland in less than a week. Seattle was sunny, not a drop of rain the whole time I was there...until I got on the plane to return home....
sorry cannot hand you the proof. Ypu will have to go look it up yourself if you cannot accept my word.
In defense of Bruce's, ah, oddly-formatted text, I must say that part of it is due to our equipment at home -- it's often not easy to see if you've erased far enough back or if what you've typed actually is appearing the way you want it to. I have real trouble with that, myself, and I am hyper-vigilant about typos and oddly-formatted text, because of my job (and I've fixed about twelve typos in this post alone, which I could not have done if I were at home -- I have fat fingers and type faster than I can see, anyhow...)...
(Soma is more well-known as the official drug of the city folks in "Brave New World") My understanding of marijuana is that it does not significantly worsen driving skills. Combat terrorism by reducing oil use! Every SUV driven sends movey through Saudi Arabia to Osama himself.
I've never noticed significant typos in anderyn's post. They're a standing theme in bru's. I have a lot of new freckles from slightly excessive sun exposure in Yellowstone last week (not sure how that happened, as I was wearing SPF 45). Do I count as a spotted grexer? :)
re190: liar, you are a liar.
um, I spotted no grexers today. Yeah.
Re #172: Yes, buying pot supports those nasty terrorists in British Columbia... Re #184: I dunno, about the computer industry, but I'd say you support terrorism much more directly by buying gas than you do by buying drugs. Re #185: I'd take the DUI argument more seriously if I'd ever seen bru arguing for banning alcohol. (Or at least bars with parking lots.) Re #194: I suspect DEA anti-drug commercial soundbites like "pot pays for terrorism" are drilled into the heads of border agents as part of their training. It keeps them from thinking about the fact that the majority of their job is to benefit U.S. corporations by propping up artificially high prices for various commercial items through enforcing tarrifs and restricting imports.
I went to two bars in Montreal, and neither of them had parking lots, and it's not like I did much drinking! Ahaha. not even any at one!
my pot supplier? His name is God. He grows it himself or so I hear. ;)
I do have a funny pot story though. Years ago when I was in college, I lived right next to the bridge to Canada in Sault Ste Marie. There was a huge fence around the land under the bridge so folks couldnt sneak up onto the bridge. On that land, out of reach naturally, was a big giant pot plant. I wish I had taken a picture. I guess someone must have chucked their weed off the side of the bridge or something.
Alcohol is legal. Not being a border agent, I do not know what gets drilled into their heads. Customs officers don't get any indoctrination, we get training, adn we get to use our own heads. Import specialist get to worry about propping up u.s. corporations, All I get to do is enforce the laws at the border. I don't make the laws.
But you use your head.
Re #200: > Customs officers don't get any indoctrination, we get training, adn we get > to use our own heads. Import specialist get to worry about propping up u.s. > corporations, All I get to do is enforce the laws at the border. The effect of enforcing those laws is still the same, though. And it's easy to see that the priorities are skewed to provide maximum benefit to corporations. Hundreds of illegal immigrants get into the U.S. every day to provide cheap labor, but try to bring too much of some grocery item across the border and you get nailed. I expect soon bringing prescription drugs across the border will become illegal, to prop up high U.S. drug prices, as well.
Wait a minute, so legalizing pot would be bad because extra police resources (presumably not freed up by not having to bust non-driving pot smokers) would be needed to bust stoned drivers, but alcohol being legal isn't bad because alcohol is legal? It's certainly possible to have an extremely simplistic moral code and believe that what's illegal is wrong and what's legal is ok, but deciding what should be legal or illegal requires a bit more thought than that.
Legalizing pot would make my job easier. But while we have one legal drug that causes thousands of deaths and injuries each year, why do you think adding another would make things better? If I ruled the world, anyone caught drunk driving would get a ban on driving for life. The problem with all drugs, and I do mean ALL drugs, is that they reduce your ability to make rational decisions. They give you an excuse when you make a mistake. "Hey, sorry dude. I was stoned." (drunk, high, wasted... take your pick.) You rationalize the result. We cannot eliminate all drugs, but lets trynot to create another legal loophole.
The fact that alcohol is legal not only does not legitimize it as an excuse for breaking laws, but the trend has been strongly toward disallowing it as an excuse in most other contexts as well. So, how does decriminialization of moderate use of another recreational drug (one with demonstrably far fewer adverse ill effects of moderate usage) create loopholes? If you ruled the world, you'd be overthrown the first time you tried to establish a policy of any sort because you apparently do not understand even the basic concept of logical consistency.
who said law was logical? Name me a single logical government. And I didn't say was a legitimate excuse, only that people rationalize and use it as an excuse. I do not see the marijuana as have far fewer adverse ill effects. You are just closing your eyes to the damage.
Please please PLEASE take the drug discussion out of the Spotted Grexer item. Please? I really don't want to forget this item. (Not that it really matters to me; I know I'll never spot a Grexer accidently --- but I do enjoy reading about what happens in Ann Arbor.)
Two points: - Alcohol causes more economic damage than *all illegal drugs combined.* The reason this fact does not get more attention is that alcohol is a big business (and so is the drug war.) - In spite of what you've seen in anti-drug ads, most studies that have looked into the matter have found that alcohol affects judgement and driving ability *more* than pot. Not that driving while stoned is a good idea, but people seem more able to judge the degree to which they're impaired while high than they do while drunk. I'd say that if there's any potential problem here, it's the lack of a test for THC that's equivalent to a breathalyzer test for alcohol impairment. But I suspect one would be developed quickly if there were demand for it.
I also enjoy reading about spottings of Grexers by other Grexers, though I rarely spot other Grexers myself, and would appreciate it if the drug discussion could move to another item.
(Sorry to contribute to the drug discussion, but just a note on the anti-marijuana ads. The first one I saw depicted a young pregnant teen, and the message was pot impairs judgement. That didn't seem to have much of a effect on me besides irritate me no end. Alcohol's a bigger culprit I think of judgement impairment. The next ad's message as you shouldn't have pot and drive. Again, my reaction was if that's your argumnent to illegalize pot, then maybe you should start with alcohol. The last ad I've seen has made a lot of impact. It shows a boy talking about his brother who's on pot and tells us how "he never dropped out of school, he never got into fights, he never had an accident" and then shows his brother stoned on a couch in the basement, and the boy ending with "in fact, he never did anything". I think if there's a message that needs to go out more about pot than "impairing judgement" and "dangers of pot and driving", it's this one. Pot may be a great entertainment drug, and I have no objection to it being used that way. But, too many people tend to rely on it for a "pick-me-up" and it's this type of use that needs to be targetted, and people should be made aware of the effects of continuous pot use, molre than the momentary impairment of judgement and car accidents.) You may now go back to the regular item.
Here is a message to all the folks who come here and say things like: "Please take this to another item people" "This is the blah blah item not the drug item, please make another item for your drift" It will never happen. If you ever find that drift in an item is bothering you and you want to move the discussion to another item, YOU have to create the other item and then *maybe* the dicussion will move. So, I have created an item for the drug discussion. Let's move it. Thanks.
OH yeah, it is item:214
(I haven't been spotted in ages.) :(
I got some paoint and a brush if you want to make an appointment...
This response has been erased.
We'll do it again. I'll be visiting UW soon.
re 215: Eeeeeew. I need to wash out my brain now.
huh?
I think "hook up" was the key phrase.
Ahhh.....
Spotted davel (semi-expectedly) at the Lighthouse Wednesday night open mic night in Milan. He played hammered dulcimer, I played ragtime piano.
I think I spotted mdw near the WCC campus. If it was him he was in a gold Volvo.
I love the hammered dulcimer. It it really fun to watch folks play those.
And davel plays a pretty good hammered dulcimer. I was surprised at the volume of sound that comes out of one of those things.
MDW does own a gold Volvo.
I'm not sure if this counts as a sighting, but I "spotted" polygon on another website I read, responding to a post someone had made about the Political Graveyard.
(strangely enough, I think I dreamt last night about having actually spotted Grexers, as opposed to my usual habit of showing up in their natural habitat.)
Ran into orinoco on the way out of our respective classes yesterday. Of the half-dozen times we've run into each other on campus the last couple weeks, it was possibly the first time it wasn't in a computer lab . . . so of course we went directly to a computer lab. . .
Re 226. Heh -- I thought that was you.
I saw Misti Rod and Baby Jack in myy living room last week.
You have several choices:
