I'm curious what these markings are all about: http://www.gull.us/~gull/bill.jpg

Hot & sour soup is the bomb, man!
It's a "chop." Beady will tell you.
(The Short Question Item is #64.) They look like chops to me, too.

It's unusual to see them on $1 bills, but on higher denominations these marks are quite common. I handled a fair number of $100 bills during my poker-playing days and I'd estimate that on the west coast at least 50% of the $100s I saw had either Asian (mostly Chinese, sometimes Korean) or Arabic stamps on them. Our currency really gets around..

Why isn't agora turned over? I thought it would have changed September 21st?
Um, look at your almanac. The equinox isn't until Sept 23.
ok. Just thought we always did the change on September 21st.
Ah. Really? I thought it was the 21st too, but I suppose the equinox can change dates...

Exactly Twi, I thought the last day of summer was 20th September irrespective of the equinox (just to keep everything neat and tidy. That is why we're on the solar calendar instead of the lunar, right? ) Oh well, you learn something new everyday.
Summer ends when the Sun crosses the Equator. I head on the weather during WDIV's news on Saturday, I think it was, that the equinox is at or about 06:45, but I didn't catch the date. According to Weather Underground, Friday is the 12-hour day: http://www.wunderground.com/history/airport/KARB/2003/9/26/DailyHistory.htm l?F ULLALMANAC=KDTW
The equinox is a solar-calendar phenomenon.
6:48 a.m. EDT 23 September.
Has now gone by. Where is agora47?
Re #7: What's the purpose of marking the bills that way?
Re #19: It's on hold just to tick off anal-retentive types. :)
re #21: > What's the purpose of marking the bills that way? I couldn't say for sure. I've always assumed it was an indication that the bills had been checked for authenticity by some trusted source such as a bank or prominent money-changer.
Couldn't you just forge the marks, though?
You have several choices:
