Item 193: It's upgrade time

Entered by drew on Tue Sep 2 03:03:04 2003:

I'm now in the market for one of the following:

Laptop:
-------
    1 GHz or better
    512M memory (1G preferred)
    40GB hard drive (80GB preferred)
    Video at least 1024x768x16bit
Sound recognized by apps as SB16
    USB 2.0
    At least one serial port
    PCMCIA or Compact Flash
    802.11B capable
Current Linux must have drivers for all.

---- or ----

PDA device:
-----------
    Fairly fast processor
    Good battery life
    Screen at least 320x320x8bit
    Sound capability of some sort
    16MB memory or better
    PCMCIA or Compact Flash slot
    802.11B capable
    Wide variety of downloadable apps
Fully featured Lotus 123 or Excel clone would be nice

I am giving the laptop a $400 handicap over the PDA since it would be
capable of substituting for an otherwise planned desktop upgrade.

Make sure to put a fast (5400 RPM not 4500 RPM) hard drive in the notebook.
You might also want to look at 802.11G rather than B (it is backward
compatible with B but can also run at 54 Mbps).

We're not always the cheapest, but we are always the best. (:

Right: He was trying to help himself make money.

Interesting. I went for 3600 RPM when I built my new computer,
to cut down on heat and noise. Unfortunately, 3600 RPM drives
are rather hard to find in the higher capacities.

Hard disks of all speeds have gotten quieter. The 5400 rpm drive I
bought for my home system a while back was a lot quieter than the 3600
rpm drive I used to have. The 10,000 RPM drives in the servers at work
are surprisingly quiet (too bad the cooling fans aren't!) Maybe the
noise they make has just gotten so high pitched I can't hear it. ;>
