Pilot held over air 'joke'

The Paris-bound flight was delayed as a result of the incident
An Air France pilot has been arrested at New York's John F Kennedy
Airport after reportedly joking at a security checkpoint that he had a
bomb in his shoes.

A Port Authority spokeswoman said the pilot was detained after making
what she described as an inappropriate remark.

The pilot, who was not identified, was later charged with falsely
reporting an incident.

Flight AF009, which had been due to leave New York late on Friday, was
delayed as a result and 350 passengers had to stay in local hotels
overnight.

The flight eventually left for Paris Charles de Gaulle airport after a
new co-pilot flew in from Paris, an Air France spokesman in Paris told
BBC News Online.

The airline said the pilot had been arrested following "misinterpreted
remarks".

A witness told the French news agency AFP that the man had jokingly
referred to a bomb in his shoes as he passed through security.
Airport police detained him and he is due to appear before a judge, as
early as Sunday, on charges which could result in a jail term of up to
11 years, the agency said.

11 years!! They can't be serious!!

Just another very sharp clue that the terrorists won!

#3 of 23 by dcat on Sat Aug 9 21:15:26 2003:

This isn't particularly news; there have been signs at checkpoints for *years*
saying that you can't joke with those people, they have to take everything
seriously, and do.

The pilot really should know better; while 11 years would be ridiculous, he
should at least be sanctioned by his airline.

This response has been erased.

And fired, unless they've got a great union.

<INCREDULOUS>
They have signs saying "Please do not joke about bombs on airplanes"?

Honestly, how dumb can people get?
</INCREDULOUS>

Perhaps stupid people should be shot and/or sterilised.

#7 of 23 by remmers on Sun Aug 10 02:35:52 2003:

The airlines were taking bomb jokes just as seriously 30 years ago.

#8 of 23 by gelinas on Sun Aug 10 05:00:16 2003:

Actually, the signs say something closer to, "Jokes will be prosecuted as
threats;" no 'please' to it.

And yes, the signs have been up a long time.

#9 of 23 by sj2 on Sun Aug 10 05:06:28 2003:

Hmmm .... yeah, but there has to be a quick background check?

Like, Ohh!!, Joe's been flying crafts for the last 20 years with us,
why would he blow up a craft. Anyways, lets check his boots .... no
bomb .... DON'T JOKE AGAIN WITH US YOU TWIT... there you go. OVER!!

It can't be that simple?

#10 of 23 by bru on Sun Aug 10 12:33:34 2003:

No. Remember the pilot a few years ago who flew his plane into the atlantic?

#11 of 23 by jmsaul on Sun Aug 10 13:49:58 2003:

The pilots who do stuff like that don't joke about it at security checkpoints
beforehand. They hide it, and in the case of the Egypt Air pilot you're
alluding to, he hid it so well that Egypt Air still denies the possibility.

#12 of 23 by bru on Sun Aug 10 14:43:01 2003:

point is, he probably will have absolutely nothing happen to him. But they
could not take a chance. If you tell me on the border you are smuggling, the
odds are you are going to end up in secondary while we search your vehicle.
If they didn't respond, or if we didn't respond, and something did happen,
who the hell do you think they would blame?

#13 of 23 by sj2 on Sun Aug 10 14:48:00 2003:

Yes, all I am saying is why couldn't they just frisk him and let him go
later?? Why the court and stuff like that? Infact, they should frisk
(including footwear) everyone irrespective of whether you claim
carrying bombs or not.

#14 of 23 by janc on Sun Aug 10 15:35:13 2003:

Why would a pilot have bombs in his shoes? A pilot should be able to crash
a plane quite handily without the trouble and expense of a bomb.

The current screening rules do not appear to be based on common sense, though.

Re #12: I agree that the guy needed to be searched, and miss his flight.
You make a comment like that at an airport checkpoint, you deserve
a cavity search. You make a comment like that at the border, you
shouldn't be surprised if your car gets vacuumed while you sit for
         a few hours.

I'm disagreeing with the idea that the guy needs to go to jail for
seven years (the 11-year figure is inaccurate, but 7 is still nuts).

#17 of 23 by sj2 on Sun Aug 10 18:41:46 2003:

Here is what they should do at the airport.

Require everyone to take off clothes and footwear excluding
undergarments ;-) Hold all this stuff in your hands and stand in a
queue. When your turn comes handover your clothes/footwear to a
security officer who checks them while a second guy frisks you. :))

Neat, Eh?

If you still get bombed/hijacked start doing dental and anal checks
too. :D

#18 of 23 by slynne on Sun Aug 10 20:28:57 2003:

Yeah, but if you started doing that, people would start going through
security just for the fun of doing a strip tease followed by an anal
exam.

#19 of 23 by remmers on Mon Aug 11 01:30:28 2003:

More likely, they'd avoid flying altogether.

#20 of 23 by sj2 on Mon Aug 11 07:14:14 2003:

Good. No flying, no airplane bombs. Problem solved!!! :)

Come to think of it, it will be some spectacle.

And Alongwith COPS and 911, you will get a third programme on TV -
Airport!!! Now we bring you the guy who was caught wearing a bra and
after the break - This guy thought he could get away with it but with
these law officers around, you just can't keep your pants on!! ;-)

Another dose of Reality from the Chum bucket.

Maybe I shouldn't have bought FS 2002, but then again, I'm actually
interested in learning how to fly, and I have flight time.

I'm not ready to cede my rights so I dont fly. I'm also not that thrilled
that I could get a ticket if my passengers take too long getting thier bags
out of my cab. I hate going to the airport for that reason. I mean, it's a
35 buck trip, but geez is it worth getting a ticket over?

resp:18 one of the few comments that just brought a good chuckle--
almost a big belly laugh, as I tried to imagine you doing that. Or
me. You never know, some people might be so snide, although John is
correct, most would likely avoid flying.

So, if the next bunch of terrorists decide to sneak explosives or whatever
else..box cutters...etc..through security, they send a patsy through first
who then "jokes" about terrorism in some way thereby creating a nice diversion
for the real carrier? Or, maybe a new line for just jokers. All of the airport
security put into place thusfar is a joke. They still don't match bags and
have not even considered the horrible possibility of "airport terminal"
terrorism. (Pun not intended originally) Bombs don't kill people, people kill
people. A very small number of folks in the world make rarely publicized
foreign policy decisions for all of us that enable fanatics and fuel hatred
across the globe. These fanatics are great political tools here domestically
as well. They scare us into realizing that we are all mortal and fragile at
that. We are very willing to jump into cars and risk being killed by numerous
obstacles on the road. Re#2 Yes the terrorists and a few business men have
won. We are losing far more than convenient flight schedules and peace of mind
in the skies. The US is deeply in debt and the debt grows. We are watching
our illusion of privacy vanish even further and "we" think somehow it will
make us a little safer. The only way the war on terrorism will be won, is if
we refuse to fight one and remove those in power who will benefit the most
from fighting.
