The Register headlined this story "Too Whacko for Jacko". :)
"Can't we all just get along?!"
Maybe if they titled a story "RIAA in the ghetto cos pop music today is crappo" they might get it. prolly not.
Jacko may be a wacko but it doesn't mean he is stupid. Think of it as evolution in action. Generations ago it used to cost the music industry a lot of money to press a record. Whats more, the reproduction was subject to degradation over time. You sold at a premium "virgin" pressings of albums and the product degraded over time both in production and use. With modern technology not only has the cost of production been reduced but the 10 millionth production of the product is identical to the first. There are no "virgin" CDs. PLus the tech is such that the purchaser of n-produced product can be used to reproduce zero-day production quality. And the cost of the official product continues to rise. And the economy sucks right about now. While the unemployment rate is rather less than _The Great Depression_ it still is about twice what it should be for full employment and only a bit less than a quarter of that. And everybody and their second cousin wants to move jobs "overseas". So, the cost of production of the music media is probably a 10th of what is was, the price of legitimate media is easily three to four times more in adjusted dollars, current media is for all intents and purposes immortal - you listen to it ten times and you listen to in ten thousand times its the same. The tech allows for easy reproduction of identical quality albeit at a higher production cost - the cost of a CD-R blank media is orders of magnitude greater when purchased retail by individuals than the raw cost of materials of the original producers- plus the time value - of legitimate media. No wonder in tight times folk are not purchasing legitimate media at such huge price and no wonder that instead of reducing the retail price to reflect current reality the music producers are in financial trouble. Expecting federal help in the form of bail out is immoral.
