Etymology: Latin (genitive Corvi), literally, raven
: a small constellation adjoining Virgo on the south
I am using the etymology of corvus == raven to override the "proper nouns
not allowed" rule.
#422 of 1055 by rywfol on Mon Oct 19 19:38:33 1998:
Ah, I was using corvus in the sense of it being the large weighted and
spiked planks used (esp. during the Punic wars) to aid in ship boarding
and also sink enemy ships. Still, any definition will do. :)

protection scheme involving a hardware key, a "dongle", which hangs in the ADB

refuses to run.

Re #612: There is no file by name letter.match in my home directory. Am I
missing something?
#615 of 1055 by kentn on Mon Jan 11 23:02:23 1999:
It's sort of standard practice on this item to provide a summary
file called 'letter.match', either created by hand editing or by the
~kentn/do.lm script (which you can look at, copy, or run from my home
dir), or by some other script (e.g. by ~srw/match.awk, which btw,
do.lm calls, anyway). It's handy to have the summary when grex is
being slow about showing dozens of old responses, like right now (and
you don't have any idea how far back to read in the item, so maybe
you need to run that -20 command, then -25, then -40, etc.).

#617 of 1055 by rcurl on Tue Jan 12 06:44:05 1999:
More specifically, Anil, enter pico letter.match at an Ok: prompt,
and you will be in a (moderately) user friendly editor, in which you
can write the words and counts. There is a submenu for editor commands.
Or, you can use Kent's script, do.lm, which isn't too hard to set up.

the past tense of shake. You will find some illustrious authors in the

not seem to have survived the 18th century.

Do you remember the time in the beginning when it started with the
five letter game and went up to the twenty-eight letter game? It
seemed to settle down to six as the best compromise between five and
many, in this medium (but don't try more than five when playing the
game entirely in your heads while on long car trips).

Well, the situation is a bit different now, though, since we've been playing

Actually, I think the thing that has changed the game the most is the
existence of searchable online dictionaries, and that wouldn't be any
different if we played with 7 letters.

True. Most of the obvious candidates have been used. I'm confident that
Kent can come up with a few more, though. :)

I agree that the use of online dictionaries help you to narrow down your
choices irrespective of the word length..but it might take more time to figure
out the word..well...

Re 758: yeah...I probably can find a few more 6-letter words :)
I guess the fact that a lot of the people who see this item are just
passing through means they can't take the time to get involved (and run
the game if they guess correctly). That, and we're suffering from a
decline in conference usership in general. I don't see where making the
word longer will help those problems, though it might revive some of
the interest for the former "regulars" if they have the time. With the
on-line dictionaries, the game will be more oriented toward the timing
of one's guesses, but then it always was. FWIW, there are slightly
more non-capitalized 7-letter words in /usr/dict/words than there are
6-letter words. Maybe we need to promote this item more? Or provide
some instructions on how to use an on-line dictionary to help? Just a
few thoughts.

law by involving forfeiture in addition to any other punishment

regardless of the punishment actually imposed
c : a crime declared a felony by statute because of the punishment imposed
d : a crime for which the punishment in federal law may be death or
imprisonment for more than one year
vassal Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Medieval Latin vassallus,
from vassus servant, vassal, of Celtic origin; akin to Welsh gwas
young man, servant Date: 14th century
1 : a person under the protection of a feudal lord to whom he has vowed homage
and fealty : a feudal tenant
2 : one in a subservient or subordinate position

Maybe we ought to take a break from 6-letter words after this game, and
perhaps try 7-letter words. That might get a few more people interested.

Right. The word has to be "picryl", which is in the dictionary Grex uses to

crimps
#1053 of 1055 by albaugh on Tue Sep 21 15:20:32 1999:
aruba has it with crimps (6)
The definitions I found interesting:
crimp (3) Function: noun Etymology: perhaps from crimp (1) Date: 1758
: a person who entraps or forces men into shipping as sailors or
into enlisting in an army or navy
crimp (4) Function: transitive verb Date: 1812
: to trap into military or sea service : IMPRESS
impress (3) Function: transitive verb
Etymology: in- (2) + press (3) Date: 1596
1 : to levy or take by force for public service;
especially : to force into naval service
2 a : to procure or enlist by forcible persuasion
b : FORCE <impressed him into a white coat for the Christmas festivities>
#1054 of 1055 by aruba on Tue Sep 21 18:59:37 1999:
I hadn't heard those definitions of crimp before.
I think I'll start a new item, since this one has passed the traditional
cutoff of 1000 responses. (Though Grex seems to be able to handle the size

point.)
