9 Sun. Faculty Recital: Yizhak Schotten, Viola and Katherine collier,
Piano

Britton Recital Hall, 3:00 PM

Works will include Sonata in A Major for Viola and Piano by Boccherini,
Bloch's Suite for Viola and Piano (1919), and Piano Quartet in g Minor,
Op. 25 by Brahms.


9 Sun. Faculty Recital: William Campbell, Trumpet

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

Program will include "Let the Bright Seraphim" by G.F. Handel, Sonata
for Trumpet and Piano by Eric Ewazen, "Napoli" by Bellstadt, and
"Allarmi Pensieri" by Alessandro Melani. Edward Parmentier and Richard
Beene will assist.


12 Wed. Guest Recital: Brigham Young University Orpheus Winds=20

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

This performance will feature UM DMA candidate Christian Smith,
bassoon.


16 Sun. Guest Recital: Neal Corwell, Euphonium=20

Britton Recital Hall, 3:00 PM

Corwell will perform his own original works for euphonium with
electronic accompaniment. He will be joined by UM faculty member Fritz
Kaenzig.


17 Mon. Guest Recital/Masterclass: Mark Kellogg, Trombone

Britton Recital Hall, 4:40 PM

With Joseph Werner, Piano and David Jackson, Trombone


18 Tue. Faculty Recital: Amy Porter, Flute=20

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

Program will include works by Dvor=E1k, Cronin, Hersant, Hanson,
Moscheles, and Foote. Porter will be assisted by Martin Katz, Nancy
Ambrose-King, and other UM music faculty members.


22 Sat. Faculty Recital: Erling Bl=F6ndal Bengtsson, Cello=20

Britton Recital Hall, 4:00 PM

Bengtsson will perform a recital titled "Homage to Alfredo Piatti,
1822-1901"; works will include Piatti's Twelve Caprices, Op. 25 and
Bach's Suite no. 3 in C Major.


23 Sun. Stearns Lecture

Lecturer: Brian Delaney=20

Britton Recital Hall, 2:00 PM

Lecture on early twentieth-century guitars.


25 Tue. University Symphony Orchestra

Hill Auditorium 8:00 PM

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor. The USO will perform Haydn's Symphony No.
100 (Military Symphony) and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 12
(1917/Lenin).


28 Fri. Faculty Recital: Christian Matjias, Piano=20

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

Program will include works by Brahms, Puccini, Wolf-Ferrari, Ives,
Bernstein,  Yap Ming Tang, and UM faculty member, Stephen Rush. This
recital will feature Eugenia Oi-Yan Yau, soprano.


30 Sun. Faculty Recital: Nancy Ambrose-King, Oboe=20

Britton Recital Hall, 3:00 PM

Program will include music by Vivaldi, Ginastera, Villa-Lobos, and
Poulenc. Faculty members Richard Beene, Stephen Shipps, Amy Porter, and
Phillip Bush will also participate.


30 Sun. Faculty Recital: Lee Morgan, Clarinet=20

Jonathan Shames, conductor. Concert will include Beethoven's "Coriolan=20
Overture," Prokofiev's "Scenes from Romeo and Juliet," and Dvor=E1k's
Symphony No. 6.


3 Wed. Concert Band

Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM

Steven D. Davis, conductor. Concert will include "Awayday" by Gorb,
"Divertissement d'=E9t=E9" by Casterede, Symphony No. 6 by Persichetti,
"Canzon septimi toni a 8-no. 2" by Gabrieli, "Marche Miniature" by
Bird, "The Courtley Dances" by Benjamin Britten/Jan Bach, "Country
Gardens" by Grainger, and "Shepherds Hey" by Grainger.


4-7, 11-14 Thu.-Sun. Theatre Department: <italic>The Good Person of
Szechwan</italic> by Bertolt Brecht=20

Trueblood Theatre, Thu-Sat 8:00 PM, Sun 2:00 PM

Directed by Malcom Tulip. This parable, filled with comic moments, asks
the question of whether it is possible to be moral and good in this
pragmatic, self-serving modern world. Tickets will be available
starting September 5 at the League Ticket Office for $15; students with
proper ID can purchase tickets for $7. Remaining tickets will be sold
at Trueblood Theatre on the days of the respective performances. For

6 Sat. Brave New Works Concert

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

The Brave New Works ensemble consists of advanced graduate students and
recent graduates of UM who present the music of living composers.
Program will include music of and will be conducted by UM Professor
Emeritus Leslie Bassett.


7 Sun. Men's Glee Club, Women's Glee Club, and the Smith College Glee
Club

Hill Auditorium, 3:00 PM

Jerry Blackstone, conductor. The University Men's and Women's Glee
Clubs along with the Glee Club from Smith College (in Northampton,
Massachusetts) will perform Brahms' Requiem. Tickets required. $5 at
the door or by calling the Men's Glee Club Office at 764-1448.


7 Sun. Faculty Recital: Arthur Greene, Piano

Britton Recital Hall, 4:00 PM

Works by Beethoven, Ravel, Brahms, and Sarasate.

Program will include works by Du Caurroy, Racquet, Titelouze, Couperin,
Guilain, and Daquin, plus anonymous works from the sixteenth century
and the eighteenth century.

Program will include music of Bach, de Grigny, and Alain. Tickets are
$20 and are available at the door. Organ Conference attendees will be
admitted for free if wearing conference badges.


10 Wed. 41st Conference on Organ Music Recital: Christiaan Teeuwsen

Blanche Anderson Moore Hall, 8:00 PM

Program will feature the French influence in Bach, B=F6hm, and
Buxtehude.


11 Thu. Symphony Band

Hill Auditorium, 8:00 PM

Michael Haithcock, conductor. Haithcock gives his debut performance as
the conductor of the UM Symphony Band. The program will include "La
Procession du Rocio" by Turina, "William Byrd Suite" by Jacob, and
"Fantasy Variations" by Grantham; new professor of oboe Nancy
Ambrose-King will be featured in Concertino for Oboe and Chamber Winds
by Von Weber; and "Music for Prague 1968" will be performed in honor of
composer Karel Husa's 80th birthday. Husa will give a preconcert talk
at 7:00 in the Kessler room at the Michigan League.


11-14 Thu.-Sun. Musical Theatre Department: <italic>Good News!</italic>
by B.G. DeSylva, Lew Brown, and Ray Henderson; book by Laurence Schwab,
B.G. DeSylva, and Frank Mandel.

Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, Thu.-Sat. 8:00 PM, Sun. 2:00 PM

Directed by Mark Madama. This production is a new adaptation by Mark
Madama and Wayne Bryan and features additional new arrangements by
Craig Barna. Good News is an exuberant look at college life and romance
in the 1920s. Tickets will be available starting September 5 at the
League Ticket Office for $20 and $15. Students with proper ID can
purchase tickets for the $15-section for $7. For more information, call

16 Tue. University Symphony Orchestra

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor. The USO will perform Barber's "Second
Essay," Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 (Eroica), and UM Professor Emeritus
Leslie Bassett's Concerto for Alto Saxophone, featuring Clifford
Leaman.


18 Thu. Jazz Ensemble

Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre, 8:00 PM

Ellen Rowe, conductor. Program will include music by John Clayton,
James Miley, Bevan Manson, Paul Ferguson, as well as student
composers.


19 Fri. University Philharmonia Orchestra and Chamber Choir

Hill Auditorium, 2:00 PM

Jonathan Shames, Jerry Blackstone, conductors. The University
Philharmonia Orchestra will be performing Webern's Six Pieces for
Orchestra, Op. 6 and Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 4; the Chamber Choir
will be performing Morton Lauridsen's Lux aeterna.


20 Sat. Contemporary Directions Ensemble

Britton Recital Hall, 8:00 PM

Jonathan Shames, conductor. Program will include Schoenberg's "Three
Pieces for Chamber Orchestra," Varese's "Octandre," Chambers' "Cold
Water, Dry Stone," and Martino's "From the Other Side."


21 Sun. Stearns Lecture

Lecture on Indian musical instruments.


23 Tue. University Choir

Sandra Snow, conductor. Works will include Vaughan Williams' "Five
Mystical Songs," Haydn's Missa Sancti Joannis De Deo, and selections by
Whitacre, Daley, and Grau that feature poetry relating to earth and
nature.

Michael Haithcock, Steven D. Davis, and Jamie Nix, conductors. The
Symphony Band, Concert Band, and Marching Band join together for an
evening of crowd-pleasing entertainment. Tickets are $10 and are

28 Sun. Halloween Concert: University Symphony Orchestra and the
University Philharmonia Orchestra=20

Tickets available through mail order only 10/1-10/12. Forms available
in the Ann Arbor News on Sunday, 9/30. Remaining tickets will go on

Lurie Tower: Mon.-Fri. 1:00 PM-1:30 PM, Sun. 1:15-2:00 PM.=20

Two UM carillons are played regularly on days when classes are in
session. The public is welcome to visit the playing rooms and watch the
