Grex Pets Item 2: Pet Quirks
Entered by brenda on Thu Apr 20 05:14:18 UTC 1995:

I have a cat named Nix who is about 8 months old. He does some very
strange things. If he finds anything like a kleenex or toilet paper,
he likes nothing better than to shred it into a million pieces.

He also will scrounge scraps of food from whever he can find them, and
only pick at HIS food, no matter what brand I buy.

What wierd things do your pets do?

Fetch. I should stop, that's strange enough for a cat.

Drop little toys in her water dish, especially paper balls.

Trail a sock around like it was some sort of wildabeastie, meowing about the
experience with the thing in her her teeth, straddlewalking over the
carcas. This is really touching domestic behavior... or she is saying
"this could be you buddy" (in a non anthropomorphic way).

Apparently hypnotized by flushing toilets.

Runs into furniture & other hard objects head first. O.K., she's stopped
doing this since she's wised up (or gained a little more coordination).

Seems to remember every ant, spider, bug, u.f.o. sighting in her entire life,
and frequently checks these suspicious locations.

Nix sounds like any other 8-month old....kid! The cat is very
"human" in its behavior!

My fish (2 out of 3) do a really funny wiggle-dance to beg for food!

This winter my current apartment has a lot of condensation on the (aluminum)
windows frames. My cat seems to be getting his entire water supply by licking
it off the frames, rather than from his water bowl.

We had a dog once, who would play hide and seek. It would go to great length
in checking out hiding places. It would always start by looking in the place
you hid last, then proceed to other places where you hid in the past. It
would bark like mad and want to be petted when it found you.

Did the dog like to carry a small keg of rum around under his chin?

Our cat loves the thrill of being surprised. She'll meet you coming
around the corner, arch her back, bounce back and forth, puff her tail and
dash off after a suitable show. She likes to play this game in a serial
fashion, engineering a series of shocking meetings. She indicates her
willingness to play even when I am in total couch potato mode by sitting
somewhere in my field of vision and waiting to catch my glance, then
she'll perform a petite flare. Recently, she has added the technique of
of rearing and running to go along with the original pogo and dart.
Very fresh. Such a cat deserves fresh tuna, but probably only requires
modest portions of cat nip.

The new cat, Conan, has set a new standard for stupidity and clumsiness. It's
kind of fun to watch him try to jump up to something and totally blow the
leap.

He also loves licking apple cores.

#7 of 57 by mooncat on Mon Nov 25 17:29:53 1996:

Licking apple cores? How odd...
Although, my sister's cat has this thing for McDonald's fries...

How old is this new cat?

#8 of 57 by scott on Mon Nov 25 20:45:29 1996:

I'd guess pretty young, hoping he'll get smarter as he ages. ;)

I think the pound had him listed as 1 or maybe 2 years old.

#9 of 57 by mooncat on Tue Nov 26 22:06:42 1996:

It may be the last kittenhood traces... <grin> Maybe as
he gets older he'll learn about balance and coordination...
 :)

my sister's cat has weird tastes...he prefers dog food to cat food
and tries to eat it when possible. Last week, it found its way
into a 25lb bag of gravy train that was open in the back. I don't
know how long he had been inside the bag,but he was chomping away.

#11 of 57 by mooncat on Fri Dec 6 17:34:48 1996:

Some cats are just like that... <shrug>
When Liska was hungry and there was no food in her dish
she would eat out of the dog's dish...

Hi Andria. :) Welcome to the pets conference.

#14 of 57 by mappy on Fri Dec 4 23:48:49 1998:

my cat, dickens has been VERY quirky ever since the day we got him from the
humaine society. I think he knew he HAD to find a home, so he put on a real
show. Whenever my mother or I would go to pet him or scratch the sides of his
cheek, he would lean into it and fall over with this absolutely lovable look
on his face. He was so tiny, he could fit in the palms of your hands. Of
course, he dropped the lovable act once he got home...he turned into Mr.
Mischief the Wonder Kitty! He contracted some sort of upper respiratory
infection and came close to dying, but he was a trooper and lived through it.
Now he loves jumping (head first) into everything: boxes, bags, even the
bathroom garbage basket...especially the garbage basket in search of Q-Tips
(his obsession). He has also been spotted with a whole roll of toilet paper
in his mouth, just trotting along proudly to hide it with his 'stash'. He has
also laid claim to our living room recliners...they are now HIS recliners.
Once a repair man came to fix a problem with the recliner and Dickens
literally growled and hissed at the man as if to say, 'hey buddy! I dont seem
to recall giving YOU permission to touch MY chair!' it was hilarious! Also,
he has a tendency to clean things. He will physically hold the dog down by
msitting on her, and clean her...it is funny. He will sometimes lick me or
my mom. One more thing, is that if you rub his belly, he will wrap his front
paws around your hand and kick it repetitively with the sweetest look on his
face, then he will seem to zone out and just keep kicking. There are way too
many things to list about him...this is only a few of them =)

#15 of 57 by gypsi on Sun May 30 10:18:06 1999:

Ouch...I hope the cat's main diet *isn't* dog food. It lacks taurine,
which is the chemical necessary for their vision and the development of
that membrane that reflects light at night (and makes them look like
demons).

Gomez plays fetch, as I said, and loves to chase his tail. He comes
when called and digs sitting in your lap. I swear...he's a dog. He
plays with toilet paper if it's in the package or hanging down from the
roll. He also likes his plastic ball with the bell inside. He'll bat
that around only while we're sleeping (typical) and bring it onto the
bed, thinking Matt will throw it. (He does this when he's AWAKE). =)
Matt calls him Darth Gomez and says that the ball is his Death Star.
It is now named that...oi.

He also jumps up to my shoulder when I walk in the door, and will
launch himself from furniture to your arms/shoulder when you least
expect it. He's a weird cat, but he's my baby.

There's a product called 'Cat-Sip' with is milk with the lactose removed
and taurine added... Sasha had a lot of that as a kitten, and really
likes it. The added taurine helps with eyes, as Sarah mentioned, but
also with a cat's coat, helping to keep it nice and healthy.

BuckShot has learned the fine art and big fun of serious Fetch. Seeing
her coming toward you carrying a wad of paper as big as her head is a
stitch.

#18 of 57 by mooncat on Wed Oct 20 14:10:35 1999:

Ohh... too cute!!

#19 of 57 by jiffer on Wed Oct 27 04:29:52 1999:

When you ring a bell, or a bell like sound, Scott will come running. Its
adorable.

#20 of 57 by mooncat on Wed Oct 27 12:54:17 1999:

Aww....

#21 of 57 by beeswing on Sun Oct 31 18:17:25 1999:

Harlis can say "mama"!!!!!!

He won't always do it, but if I look at him and say "Can you say mama?"
He blinks and makes a "ma-ma" meow sound. It's so cute.

He can also do "uh oh" in meows. He did this the last time I caught him
on the kitchen countertop.

#22 of 57 by jiffer on Fri Nov 12 15:40:36 1999:

When do kittens out grow their kitten meow and get that mature meow? Not that
Scott is meowing yet... he chirps and growls a lot though...

#23 of 57 by otter on Sat Nov 13 17:20:22 1999:

How old is Scott? I would imagine that it happens during or after
adolesence. Interesting question...

New photos of you-know-who are up on my page.

#24 of 57 by jiffer on Sat Nov 13 22:04:35 1999:

Scott is now 7.5 months... but he doesn't talk much, Pinky is the verbal one.

#25 of 57 by otter on Mon Nov 15 06:24:36 1999:

Had to temporarily tear down the photo page at my site. Bummed.
BuckShot has tried to meow a couple of times since her visit to the evil
v-e-t. Ignoring her in those moments seems to have been all the
discouragement she needed; she hasn't done it since Thursday. Whew!

#26 of 57 by jiffer on Mon Nov 15 23:04:24 1999:

ouchie! Scott only makes an almost meow when we are driving in the car, he
likes his cage better than being out of it in the car, but boy! what a noise
he makes. Scott is also afraid of places without ceilings, you know, the
outdoors.

#27 of 57 by mooncat on Tue Nov 16 16:05:39 1999:

<chuckles> Yeah... Sasha's like that... she keeps *thinking* that she
wants to go outside.... but then she looks up and freaks. She doesn't
mind going *into* her kitty carrier, I just open the door and she crawls
in, it's when the kitty carrier starts moving that she has a problem.

#28 of 57 by beeswing on Sat Nov 27 20:15:56 1999:

Harlis has to be stuffed into his kitty carrier, then cries as soon as
I pick it up. I have to stick my fingers in the spaces of the carrier
to remind him I'm still there. I tell him everything's ok about 100
times but he cries anyway. I feel like the worst parent in the world. :)

#29 of 57 by otter on Sat Nov 27 20:27:55 1999:

OK, cat photo page is back up; even has one of Ric.

Her Grace is finally over the fuzzies and has her adult coat, which
brings up a very happy quirk.
There is a trait which I believe to be unique to Bengals called "glitter
coat". It is just like it sounds; the coat has some hairs which grow out
much longer than the rest. These each have a strange little air pocket in
the end that reflects light in such a way that it shows a golden color.
Especially in sunlight, the entire animal appears to be covered with gold
dust.
And guess who lit up in the sun Tuesday!?! I am still amazed by it; she
looks so incredible! I had forgotten all about the possibility...

#30 of 57 by mooncat on Mon Nov 29 01:11:43 1999:

Wow!! That's so cool. :)

Heh, I just got back from my parents' house, where my adorable little
Sasha had the animals there (two cats and a german shepherd) utterly
terrified... I don't know why... she's such a sweet lil demon...

#31 of 57 by gypsi on Mon Nov 29 04:05:02 1999:

<snort>

#32 of 57 by jiffer on Mon Nov 29 19:20:59 1999:

MY baby still loves me!!!! Oh, new quirk. Scott LOVES to watch the toilet
flush. He was waiting out side the door will after Jared was finished waiting
to "watch". Silly boy. I flushed it for him just so he could.

#33 of 57 by gypsi on Mon Nov 29 21:04:23 1999:

My cats and Chris' cat do that too. It's hilarious.

#34 of 57 by mooncat on Mon Nov 29 23:35:35 1999:

As long as they're not pushing other cats *into* the potty it's all okay.

#35 of 57 by scott on Tue Nov 30 00:59:30 1999:

I've noticed that the cats are a little skittish around me after I've gotten
back from a longer-than-weekend trip. Nothing odd there, I guess.

#36 of 57 by otter on Tue Dec 7 04:57:32 1999:

It finally happened. They've gone from being Ric and BuckShot to
functioning as "the kitties". They now touch while sleeping and I've
caught each of them licking the other's head. Be afraid.

#37 of 57 by gypsi on Tue Dec 7 12:13:31 1999:

Awww...my kitties do that... =)

#38 of 57 by mooncat on Tue Dec 7 12:17:32 1999:

Heh, Sasha and the Woobs do that... til one has has enough and they go
tearing through the apartment one after the other...

#39 of 57 by beeswing on Thu Dec 23 05:42:02 1999:

My brother's cats do that. They're bathing each other and then it's
fight time.
