So are there any particular plans for what happens with the money we raise?

#2 of 156 by volvo on Sun May 12 00:22:36 1996:

Is there some unwritten law about bidding on your own product? (per item #7)
actually could unload it, maybe i could scam w.w.w. access out of the deal?

#3 of 156 by volvo on Sun May 12 00:23:38 1996:

oops, a sentance dissapeared! now where the heck did it go???

#4 of 156 by popcorn on Sun May 12 04:58:30 1996:

Re 1: Hopefully we can use the auction proceeds to get a faster Internet
connection. It depends on how much we raise and how much a net connection
will cost.

Re 2-3: Could you try that again? I'm not sure what you're asking. Yup,
you're welcome to bid on your own donation to the auction, but the money you
spend on buying what you donated would go to Grex.

I'd like to suggest that when an item has gone a week without any bids,
instead of it being immediately sold, maybe the auctioneers should enter a
response to let people know this is their last chance to bid. You could
just say "Going once..." and maybe "Going twice..." the next day, etc.
That gives people a chance to change their mind about bidding; especially
if they skimmed an item because there were others they were interested
in, and it doesn't sink in until later that they want to bid.

#6 of 156 by popcorn on Tue May 14 03:58:16 1996:

That makes mucho good sense. Thanks!

#7 of 156 by robh on Tue May 14 05:08:16 1996:

I was planning on making an announcement six days after the final
bid, to the effect of, "Last chance!"

#8 of 156 by jwt on Fri May 17 11:36:41 1996:

Hey, is there a minimum bid? I just had to ask.. What if I bid 5 cents
for the mouse pad and 25 cents for the SVGA card (nobodys bidded yet on
these). Well, on one hand anyone could beat those bids and it might get
started, but, what if I got the card for 25 cents??!? Maybe you should let
people bid anything but if it comes up to be, lets say less than $5.00, maybe
you should charge a min. of $5.. So if someone out bids me by $.50, they get
it but at least they'd donate $5.. Or something to that effect?? no? Maybe
that pad isn't worth $5, but the time and effort and what not... ect.. You
get my point, if you could expect at least $5 from everything it'd be worth
doing this no matter what you auctioned... See ya..

#9 of 156 by bruin on Fri May 17 15:05:56 1996:

JWT's point is a valid one, especially when you must consider that, if the
successful bidder lives out of town, the item may have to be mailed to that
person, and 25 cents won't even mail a letter anymore.

#10 of 156 by janc on Fri May 17 19:48:59 1996:

Some of the people posting items have stated minimum bids. It might be a good
idea for those people who's items haven't been bid on yet.

#11 of 156 by janc on Sat May 18 02:46:36 1996:

(By the way, current bids total just over $300).

#12 of 156 by natbaird on Sat May 18 20:04:26 1996:

If an item must be shipped, who is responsible for paying the shipping
and handling?? the donator, Grex, or the buyer?

#13 of 156 by omni on Sat May 18 21:34:05 1996:

It would be logical for the buyer to bear the shipping costs, unless the
seller was feeling magnamamous. ;)

#14 of 156 by brighn on Sun May 19 03:14:00 1996:

I thought it was mentioned in the Agora auction item
that the seller would be responsible.

#15 of 156 by popcorn on Sun May 19 04:59:00 1996:

Yup, we've been saying that the donator will arrange for delivery, unless it's
specified otherwise.

#16 of 156 by eeyore on Mon May 20 14:19:22 1996:

out of curiousity, would it be possible to donate animals? (we hink that one
of our guiena pigs might be pregnerant....)

#17 of 156 by wolfe on Mon May 20 14:39:39 1996:

um, have you decided how to inform the highest bidder that the
item is now theirs? an email message perhaps? my mom keeps asking
if she should send in the dollars for the truffles yet and i keep
telling her....i don't know!

#18 of 156 by popcorn on Mon May 20 14:45:59 1996:

Rob or I will enter a response in the item. We're a bit behind on pointing
out that bidding is slowing down on particular items. Ideally, we should be
entering "going, going, gone" type responses so that people don't forget about
items they're still interested in.

#19 of 156 by robh on Mon May 20 16:20:43 1996:

I'll sweep through the items and note which ones are approaching
the finish.

#20 of 156 by janc on Mon May 20 20:32:50 1996:

I wouldn't close an item without give at least 24 hours notice.

#21 of 156 by janc on Mon May 20 20:33:55 1996:

PS: According to my notes, high bids currently total $432.50.

#22 of 156 by wolfe on Wed May 22 13:01:25 1996:

um, this may be a dumb question, but, it says in item 1 that when
the check gets to cyberspace communications, the donor will
arrange to deliver what you bought to you...who is supposed to tell
the donor when its time to deliver...grex or the buyer? thanx

#23 of 156 by robh on Wed May 22 13:26:25 1996:

popcorn or I will send mail to the donor.

#24 of 156 by aruba on Wed May 22 13:29:56 1996:

And before that, when I get the check, I'll send mail to popcorn and robh.

#25 of 156 by janc on Thu May 23 17:44:12 1996:

Total high bids: $535.95

#26 of 156 by janc on Fri May 31 17:01:41 1996:

If my notes are not too scrabbled (which they probably are) total high bids
now total $707.75

#27 of 156 by eeyore on Tue Jun 4 18:32:47 1996:

(i know that a hefty chunk of that is mine...sigh..:)

#28 of 156 by janc on Wed Jun 5 17:55:01 1996:

(we thank you for your generousity)

#29 of 156 by tsty on Thu Jun 6 15:58:07 1996:

<<factorials notwithstanding ...<g> >> thank you, eeyore.

#30 of 156 by janc on Fri Jun 7 03:45:15 1996:

Current total: $775.26

#31 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Jun 9 00:10:18 1996:

It's kind of a stretch to get from here to there, but I wonder if we can break
$1000. Anybody else out there have something cool to donate?

#32 of 156 by qt314 on Sun Jun 9 01:57:57 1996:

Rob, I could donate my heart. ;) (this is in response to something you said
earlier. The bidding should start at......? ) ;)

#33 of 156 by aruba on Sun Jun 9 05:18:50 1996:

You know, we don't have anyone offering a date with themselves. Didn't I read
that such a thing was offered on M-Net?

#34 of 156 by popcorn on Sun Jun 9 05:44:44 1996:

Er, um, I think that's not exactly what we auctioneer types had in mind.

#35 of 156 by robh on Sun Jun 9 09:26:01 1996:

I'd feel especially bad if nobody bid on that item. >8)

#36 of 156 by aruba on Sun Jun 9 14:40:49 1996:

Ah. I see your point.

#37 of 156 by fuzzball on Sun Jun 9 22:38:21 1996:

can we pay in cash?
i hope so cause my mom wont write checks for me

#38 of 156 by robh on Mon Jun 10 02:18:59 1996:

I'd really rather not have anyone sending cash through the
mail. Can you get a money order?

#39 of 156 by brighn on Mon Jun 10 02:50:52 1996:

Maybe you should consult with your other auctioneers before
saying that, Valerie... Rob suggested I donate myself not just
as a date, but as a spouse. "Be Brighn's next spouse" was the offer,
I believe.  And, um, no, I'm not willing to donate that.  =}
