Grex Writing Item 180: Writer's Submissions Tracker Software
Entered by octavius on Sun Jan 28 21:30:16 UTC 1996:

I have a piece of softwaare that some of the people in this conference
might be interested in testing. It's called Writer's Submission Tracker, and
Ithink that title is self-explanatory.
If any one would like to beta-test it, please respond, I need to know
        what could be improved.

I'll send it to you, if I can figure it out...
(The Unix Mail program command to attach a file to a message. You'll need
PKunzip if you do not already have it.)

Go into the menu system and try to conduct a search the file exists
on Grex, I hope each of you have access to an IBM. (I'd send the file Anne,
but I can't send the documents with it and that is generally frowned upon.)

I use a Mac... however, I do have access to a IBM......

I'm afraid my computer is incompatible with Grex's, I cannot send
the file to this system. :(.

Hmm, how were you trying to do the transfer? Grex has kermit, xmodem,
ymodem, and zmodem programs. With perhaps some fiddling with the
settings, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get one of those to
work.

I have tried Zmodem and Ymodem, neither of my comm programs support
Kermit, but an Ascii transfer might work...

Hmmm...you seem to be coming in over the internet. Most file transfer
programs like zmodem won't work well over telnet connections. (I've
heard kermit does). You probably need to do the transfer it two stages.
First, get the file onto whatever machine you telnet from, then use "ftp"
to transfer it to Grex. You start ftp just like you would telnet, usually
"ftp cyberspace.org". It will ask for your login and passwd, then give
you an "ftp>" prompt. Just say "put filename" to transfer it into your
Grex home directory.

Yes, I am coming in over the Internet, but Ftp is not available through
Bucknell's system.
I've tried every option that is available to me, I am afraid I cannot
get it to this sytem.

Could you e-mail it? Most mailers will include a file.

#14 of 15 by janc on Wed Feb 7 20:20:24 1996:

Some zmodem's have a "expand control-characters" mode, like "sz -e". This
sometimes works better over net connections. But not all zmodems have that
switch.

Mail may be the best plan.

I have tried, however, if you are willing to send a self-addressed
stamped envelope to my home address, I can give you a copy. The mailers
I have tried to attach files to do not work the way I would like them to.
If anyone is interested in this approach, please e-mail me, since
you're on this sytem, you should know what my e-address is..
