Grex Utne Item 1: Welcome
Entered by nsiddall on Sun Oct 13 20:12:43 UTC 1996:

Hello and welcome. This is a forum for members of the Ann Arbor Utne
Salon(s), and anyone else who is interested, to discuss issues that arise
in our meetings, other interesting topics, organizational matters, stamp
collecting, politics, and anything else that someone wants to bring up.
This group was inspired by a campaign by the Utne Reader magazine to
promote something they called "salons," by which they meant a sort of
social institution intended to promote intellectual discussion and
learning. We are kind of a renegade group, and at this point I doubt any
of us are actually members of the Utne Salon organization, or that the
Utne Reader is in any way aware of our existence. We just call ourselves
the "Utne Group" and meet for brunch once a month. We've heard there is
another Utne organization somewhere in Ann Arbor-- perhaps members of that
will appear in this conference. People who are interested in learning
about Utne Salons other than our own "Utne Group" might wish to visit a
website called the Utnecafe.

I myself have been an "Utne Reader" subscriber for the past two years. I do
enjoy getting a very different take on the world around me.

I've heard a lot of people say Utne Reader isn't as good as it used to be.
I got into it a bit later than the heyday, so I'm not sure.

But how could it change? It's not like they lost their best writers or
editors. Maybe it is the *readers* who have changed...

I've read Utne off and on since it's very first issue back in the late 80's
and have found that my interest, if not the quality, waxes and wanes.
I love the concept -- a new topic, as treated by dozens of magazines, all in
one issue. Of course, that means that if they have a string of topics that
don't interest me, I'm going to be bored with the magazine for a while.
That's why I don't subscibe very often.

As one of the members of the Utne Salon that spawned this cf, and with the
absence of the co-fw, and the extended absence of the remaining fw, I'm
volunteering to become a co-fw here. any objections or support?
