Grex Travel Item 61: VACATIONS! VACATIONS! VACATIONS! [linked]
Entered by viper2 on Thu Jul 3 13:14:13 UTC 1997:

Where are you going on Vacation this summer..?

Here I suggest we post where we are going,.. and what we know about where
other people are going. This way we can inform people about the things they
"just can't miss" while they are there, or the things "i wouldn't waste my
money on".

I'll start, (as it is only fair) I'm going to Panama City Beach FL.
Anysuggestions on what not to miss..?

Anyone heading south this summer..?
If you are heading toward Myrtel Beach SC you have to go to the Pavilion (a
little amusement park) and check out Mother Flecthers and the Spanish Gallion
(both clubs) and if you are there you can't miss the strip at night =).
A great place to eat is Bennagins (dont' think i spelled it right) and Dick's
last Resort at Barefoot Landing.

If you plan to drive anywhere via GA... I'd suggest you get GAs there...Erik
and I found out that it is cheep in GA and not in the borderign states...

Mary and I will be going to Lubeck, Maine ('way up the coast,
near Canada) for a week of music camp. She'll be attending cello
sessions, me piano. We've never been there but have been told
that it's gorgeous at this time of year.

Washington DC for a few days, and Lakeside Ohio for a week in August. I love
the Panama City Fort Walton Beach area of Florida.

#7 of 35 by kami on Thu Jul 3 19:00:33 1997:

I'd *love* to go to Stratford, it sounds like so much fun.
We're going to spend a 4-day weekend on Michael's parents' baot, starting from
Charlevoix. Anyone know that area and want to make suggestions about route,
and an inexpensive place to stay if the wee one can't cope with the boat?

In August, we're going to Pennsic- a medieval campout for about 10 days, in
western PA. My 13th or so year.

#8 of 35 by rcurl on Fri Jul 4 04:31:24 1997:

I have sailed from Charlevoix to Harbor Springs, and overnighted on the
boat there (but ate in town). It is an easy day's sail. I have not sailed to
Beaver Island, but that is another possible destination.

#9 of 35 by kami on Fri Jul 4 18:25:28 1997:

I expect we'll overnight on the boat Sunday and probably Monday, but we'll
arrive a bit late on Saturday night to catch M's folks, and the kids will need
some time and room to uncramp after the drive. Econolodge?

#10 of 35 by srw on Fri Jul 4 22:19:42 1997:

Since we no longer have kids to take along on vacations, we are no
longer required to take our vactions in summer. I had a great vacation
in the Spring, and I am planning one in the fall, after school reopens.

A couple weeks ago, one of my brothers and his family flew from Michigan to
Myrtle Beach, SC. I met them there [I drove from Durham, NC] and we spent
5 sun and sand filled days...

After I get settled in my new place, I do hope to get in some more camping
trips, too... [Which reminds me, I went on my first camping trip of the year,
too--out on the coast]. I'd love to go up in the mountains sometime, too.

This is now linked to the travel conf [as item 61]. :-)

(Vacation? What's that?)

#14 of 35 by viper2 on Mon Jul 7 03:08:16 1997:

Denise,
where in the mountains are you thinking..?
I can suggest a very nice day trip on the New River (it is a heavy traveled
area) from Zaloos down to New River State Park.. camping in the park is great
if you can get river front sites and there are a few nice nature trails too.
If you want a nice hike.. you make got to Stone Mountain in wilkes (right by
my house) it is a nice hike up the side of the face of the mountain and down
by a beautiful water fall.
those are some places to think about

graduation party almost 3 weeks ago... went up to my family's cottage near
grayling/mancelona for the 3,4,5 and 6th. i don't think there will be any

*begs to go to hawaii*
that sounds great signet!

I am going to be going to Chicago for the weekend and then camping with the
family up at the Wisconsin Dells. If you go there (and you should it is
gorgeous) stop by the art shop of Emmet Johns. He works all is pastel chalks,
and does the most incredible artwork of people. He even has a photo of the
piece he did of my sisters and me. :)

#19 of 35 by jared on Sun Jul 13 11:37:11 1997:

Uh.. here's where I go:

I go to a secluded cabin in the woods, no roads, no electricity, no
telephones, and the cell tower they got there a few years ago goes down
quite a bit, so cell phones don't even work all the time up there.. Last
year my nationwide pager didn't work there, not like I could have done
anything if it did, but i brought it along more for the sheer humor of
having it there... needless to say, to get to it, you first fly into the
bangor, maine international airport.. now.. most intl airports you'd
think would be pretty large, but it's not.. once you're there, you drive
about 30 mins out to east holden, me, then call the folks at the
clubhouse and tell them you'll be down at the "landing" in about 30
mins.. then you drive down this long and winding dirt road, it's about 5
miles long, but trust me, you need the time to make it down it :)
Once you get a few miles down the road, you unlock this big metal chain
from the road, then drive past and relock it.. you eventually get to the
"landing", park your car, and take the boat the mile down the lake to
where your cabin is..

The place has a propane fridge, and propane lights, and that's about
it.. you've got your indoor plumming, with a big water tank that you run
a pump to fill up.

They go shopping and bring in the mail every Monday, Wed and Friday, but
other than that, you've got to either row, sail or canoe out to get
anywhere.. Oh, and you folks who think that motorized boats would be
cool here, you should know that they're not allowed at all, so don't
bother. Sound nice? I think so.

#20 of 35 by signet on Mon Jul 14 13:21:38 1997:

that's sounds great! esp. the no-motor-boats rule. Definitely a peaceful
place. re: the intl airport: several small cities have this global name in
their airport's title, but if it's anything like Chas SC (6 gates), I
won't expect much. I flew into Portland ME once--we even had to walk on the
tarmac to get to the one level terminal.
I love Maine. We used to vacation on Long Island, ME (furthest island out
in Portland's Casco Bay).

#21 of 35 by mcnally on Mon Jul 14 16:54:29 1997:

When I was growing up in Muskegon (which has, I think, two "gates"
(actually doors onto the tarmac..) at Muskegon International Airport)
the local rumor was that the airport earned the "International" part
of its name when a Canada goose inadvertantly landed on one of the
  runways..

Sounds like a great spot for a vacation indeed.. This summer I'll be
driving out to Seattle for a while to visit my sister and will visit
some great places (for example, Yellowstone) along the way..

#22 of 35 by tpryan on Mon Jul 14 22:19:27 1997:

What about the Dexter Interplanetary spaceport?

#23 of 35 by scg on Mon Jul 14 23:50:05 1997:

My interpretation of small "International" airports is that it probably means
they have one flight a day to Canada.

#24 of 35 by bjorn on Tue Jul 15 01:20:02 1997:

Maybe, if I can get the money and figure out what I'd do with *the rest* of
my time there, I might go to Annapolis to at least visit my cousin's grave
. . .

#25 of 35 by mcnally on Tue Jul 15 05:53:50 1997:

re #23: I'll check but I doubt Muskegon sends a flight a day to
Canada. My guess is that "International" means they have someone
on staff who's legally empowered to do a customs check of some sort..

Back in April, Steffi and I went on vacation toalifornia for two weeks.
We hit a lot of the high spots (literally and figuratively). We had a
great time. I took four rolls of film on that trip, and had them
developed onto a photo CD (about 100 pix - slightly fewer).

Anyway I thought it would be cool to describe this vacation to my family
and friends using these pictures, so I began writing it up as a
travelogue for the web. It sort of grew and grew, until it became much
more than was originally expected.

You can read my recounting of the great times we had in
http://www.wwnet.net/~srw/cdv97/

(Or just look at the pictures and skip the words - I won't be offended.)

#29 of 35 by omni on Wed Jul 30 05:21:01 1997:

Only 4 rolls? Had it been me, I would have done at least 10-12.

How may pix does a photo CD hold?

#30 of 35 by srw on Fri Aug 1 06:32:01 1997:

You can get about 100 pix on a CD in photo CD format

I had 4 rolls of 24 and they just did fit. I made pretty efficient use of them
on the site, too. The developing and scanning costs were high enough that I
probably didn't want to shoot 10 to 12 rolls. As it was I spent over $50.

Cabo San Lucas, which is located on the southern tip of Baja California.

Nice, llan. get a tan and enjoy.

#34 of 35 by srw on Fri Sep 5 03:14:55 1997:

Sounds like fun. I am thinking about going on vacation in October, too,
but not so far. I haven't decided for certain. It looks like a
last-minute seat-of-the-pants thing. If I go anywhere interesting, I'll
try to take pictures.

#35 of 35 by n8nxf on Wed Sep 10 11:40:50 1997:

I take vacations to take care of sick kids, work on the house or let my
wife go out for appointments. Sometimes we go camping locally.
