A couple of weeks ago, I visited the Grand Canyone for the first time. All I can say is, WOW!!! It was quite spectacular and well worth the four and a half hour drive from Las Vegas. There's a trail down to the bottom of the canyon, the Kaibab Trail, that we took about a mile down. Being winter, it was snow-covered part of the way, and we really didn't have the right shoes for hiking, but again, it was worth risking our necks to walk a little way down the canyon for such a great view. The only downer was the restaurant at the Lodge. All I can say is YUCK! At any rate, if you get a chance to go to the Grand Canyon, do it. And do it in the winter. There was hardly anyone there, and it was quite nice to be able to enjoy it without throngs of people.

Anybody got a line on good weekend trips. The place which makes is possible for me to go places and see things also makes it impossible for me to go places and see things during the week, and tired of looking at snow.
Glad you had a great experience at the canyon in winter, Dan, but I have a different story to tell. Last Christmas, after a wonderful week in Scottsdale, we (five of us and a baby) drove from there to the Canyon (through incredible Sedona-which is a whole other story). The trip necessitated an overnight stay around Flagstaff (so the cost of the trip rapidly escalated) and when we eagerly got to the canyon, it was socked in with fog. At the rim, it was snowing and clear and beautiful. The fog was from about 2,000 feet to just below the rims edge, so all we could see was the edge, the clouds below and a touch of the rim on the other side. The rangers told us the fog had been in the canyon for th epast three days and might stay for many more. We hung around for five hours and then left. We "saw" the Canyon in the movie of the same name the following month. My advice. . call ahead to find out weather con- ditions before you drive up there if you dont want to be disappointed in the winter. I agree, a trip to Arizona in the winter is a treat though.
We would like to visit the Canyons (Bryce & Grand) this summer with the kids. Can anyone recommend places to stay(and why) and activities while there suitable for children ages 8 to 12 ? Thanx.
I haven't been to the canyon for a long time. I know I visited it as a kid on family trips, but remember bevisiting it and then camping on the north rim, in February (with a cat).
To Topcat: If you want to take the mule rides, or camp in the canyon, better call right now. I understand these fill up very early.
I saw the canyon in a helicopter ride almost 25 years ago. WOW! I heard they don't do those anymore, tho.
I thought there was a news story of a helicopter crash in the GC last fall?
Well we went to the canyon and it was spectacular. Hiking the Bright Angel Trail was the hike of a lifetime. Word to the wise, when the guides tell you to bring a gallon of water per person, they mean it. We drank it all. As to the food, don't miss an opportunity to chug some MuleSkinner Beer ant the Bright Angel Lodge.
