Welcome to the Travel Conference! This conference can be used for a variety
of things including [but not necessarily limited to] places you've enjoyed
visiting and/or lived, places to avoid, modes of transportation to various
places, hostels, beds & breakfasts, whatever you want to share/ask/learn about
related to not only the states but world-wide travel and living.

We have a lot of well travelled and diverse people here; please share your
experiences!!

Yea, but what's the point in beds with massagers that take a quarte for five
minutes worth of massaging?

#2 of 65 by srw on Fri Oct 1 06:10:45 1993:

Sounds like a scam to me, Bjorn. Save your quarters for video games.

#3 of 65 by vidar on Sat Oct 2 15:48:00 1993:

That's could be considered even more of a waste, for the person who isn't
familiar with a certain video game.

This conference neds some new entries. Doesn't anyone travel or want to talk
about travel? Maybe as we get closer to summer wanderlust will surface.

#5 of 65 by srw on Sat Apr 16 01:01:18 1994:

I would really love to travel. Maybe when I stop paying for college...
In the meantime, i will be traveling to Boston for the graduation of
My older son, Jonathon, from MIT. Boston is a lot of fun, and I haven't
been there in several years. I can already taste Durgin Park's cornbread.

This June I've got to drive out to extreme NE Penna. (the Poconos). Any
suggestions on places to stay, etc.?

#7 of 65 by omni on Sat Apr 16 05:02:36 1994:

I just had a close encounter of the strange kind with the people who
run Colorado's tourist board. It seems that the policy now is to no longer
include a highway map of CO in the travel package. In fact, the woman
on the other end of the phone got quit4e indignent when I pressed for
an address to write to so I could get a copy of thier map. She suggested
that I go to AAA or a Travel agent if I wanted a map.
I wrote a letter to the chairman of the tourist board, and hopefully
I can get thier map.
The upshot of the whole thing is, I now just have to wait for the
mail to catch up with me, and my "Atlas" will again be complete.

The poconos are supposed to be very nice, but I've got no answer for you.

#9 of 65 by jdg on Sat Apr 16 20:06:22 1994:

re 7: try the Gov's office if you don't get what you want. If that fails,
have Engler's office call for you. :-)

#10 of 65 by headdoc on Sat Apr 16 21:04:51 1994:

Well, I've got an opporrtunity to go to Arizona. Unfortunately in August.
Keeping in mind that I cant stand excessive heat (I tend to wilt) does anyone
know how bad it would be to spend a few days in Tuscon and then go on to
Phoenix for a conference.
?

#11 of 65 by srw on Sun Apr 17 06:34:44 1994:

Bad. Stay inside - everybody's got A/C.

#12 of 65 by cally on Tue May 17 20:20:51 1994:

If you're traveling in the Poconos check out the whitewater rafting in Jim
Thorpe, PA. Its a rated river and a hell of a lot of fun. The Poconos are alos
noted for motels that have heart shaped tubs in the room.

#13 of 65 by headdoc on Wed May 18 00:44:39 1994:

The whitewater rafting sounds great. I cant imagine why heart shaped tubs
would be a "draw". Now two person hottubs. . .that's something else.

#14 of 65 by klg on Wed May 18 17:03:05 1994:

How do I get the raft into the motel tub?

#15 of 65 by rcurl on Wed May 18 18:05:38 1994:

The tub *is* the raft.

#16 of 65 by headdoc on Thu May 19 00:11:22 1994:

And when you press the on button for the jets. . voila! Whitewater. But,
hopefully without Bill and Hillary to get you into trouble.

#17 of 65 by rcurl on Thu May 19 05:33:10 1994:

I'm really glad we are helping you, Audrey ;->.

Welcome to the traveling conference, Emily.

#24 of 65 by headdoc on Sat Oct 1 13:57:15 1994:

I check it periodically but pass on by when noone else has written.

#25 of 65 by tiza on Mon Oct 3 02:31:40 1994:

Hih, this is my first time in Grex. SEptember 1-9 I was in Maine,
New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. While In Halifax, NS walking around
I must have counted 10 vegetarian restaurants in 5 blocks. It was
a beautiful city. Walking around at night with no threat to person
or purse was an unusual experience for this country person. Thye
(I really need to spend more time with Mavis Beacon's typing lessons)
Anyway, they have the Citadel on a ghigh hill overlooking Halifax harbor.
The public gardens are victorian and cover 7 acres. The waterfront
has been preserved as the "old" town with a building that they floated
across the harbor. It arrived sideways and they left it that way. A
new building was constructed near the waterfront (highrise) and it was
built on an angle in order to preserve the view of the harbor. Are the
Canadians more worried about perservation than we are? It appears that
way. (Hiccup?) If ever you have an opportunity, spend a few days in
Halifax. . . IS this boring anyone? See Acadia National Park. It is
SPECTACULAR! Be sure to have anough time to walk the carriage trails
in the park. I did not and I will regret it on my deathbed. Pack a lunch.
Bar Harbor prices are worse than England's for food. SEe the reversing
falls in St. John, New Brunswick. Smell the harbor and watch the seals. Take
a whale watch tour. To finish it all off, stop in Portland, Maine and walk
around the harbor/downtown area. It too is well preserved and very quaint. I
will quit now in case there is a limit on how much a person should write.
This was fun!

Welcome to Grex, Renee, and thanks for your images.
I took my two boys on a camping trip 11 years ago (they were 7 and 12 then)
to Acadia. We hiked a lot and really had fun. Then we took the ocean ferry
to Nova Scotia. The kids were allowed to play the slot machines on that
ride. It was an interesting experience for them. We saw Halifax, but
from your description, Renee, we didn't stay long enough.

By the way, you can edit your responses to remove the typos.
Typing :e at the > prompt drops you into your preferred editor
I am nowhere near as perfect a typer as my responses would make it seem.

#27 of 65 by tiza on Tue Oct 4 09:45:42 1994:

Thanks for the editing instruction Steve. The reason time was limited
at Acadia was because plans to take the ferry had to be cancelled. A
storm came in with 85 mph winds (120k) and terrible rain so the ferry
could not run. We ended up driving from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor (660 miles).

Sounds as though you had an enjoyable trip. Hope to hear more of
everyone's travels.

#28 of 65 by headdoc on Sun Oct 9 21:48:52 1994:

Welcome to grex Renee. I love to travel and do it as often as I can. I am
thinking about a trip to Europe early next summer (in June) and am playing
with the idea of the Lake district in Northern Italy or the south of
france (provence.) Then again, maybe some Greek Isles. I think I will base
my decision on currency fluctuations because that can make the difference
between a very expensive trip and an outrageously expensive trip. Anyone
have any other ideas?

#29 of 65 by spowers on Wed Oct 12 18:36:54 1994:

We're looking for a reasonably priced (about 14 days) trip to South America.
Took a neat trip to Machu Picchu in February. Now would like Ecuador or
Bolivia. Anyone out there with recent experiences?" ."

#30 of 65 by denise on Sun Dec 4 16:19:41 1994:

Hey everyone!! I just got an internet acces, so I'll be back in this
conference more often... Glad to see all the activity!! :-)

#31 of 65 by bowser on Sat Dec 31 01:52:20 1994:

What advice do you all have for a spring break trip? I want to go
somewhere with beaches, cheap and not too touristy. Caribbean,
or maybe Mexico, with the cheap peso now!

#32 of 65 by roz on Tue Jan 3 12:26:27 1995:

Do you want a "nightlife" kind of place with lots of college folk, or
something more quiet?

#33 of 65 by bowser on Tue Jan 3 20:38:38 1995:

Not college folk! How awful! No, I'm more interested in
scenery, beaches, tranquil surroundings, than nightlife.
Actually, I think the ideal would be to charter a yacht--if
anyone would trust me to sail!--but I'm not quite up to that
this year.

#34 of 65 by lsee on Sat Feb 4 05:22:56 1995:

I don't know about scenery and stuff, but I am also new to this grex thing.
I'll be traveling to Toronto in three weeks. Any things I should see and WHat
should I stay away from. I hear the subways are good and clean though.

#35 of 65 by rcurl on Sat Feb 4 06:46:27 1995:

(The text collector doesn't auto-wrap, Larry, so hit return every 72
characters, or so).

#36 of 65 by headdoc on Sat Feb 4 16:22:57 1995:

Larry, there is so much to see and do in Toronto, it would take too long to
list them all here. Go to the library and get a travel book on Toronto and
enjoy. Make sure you eat in some of the small ethnic restaurants and sample
their Muffins. For come reason, they have the best muffin's I have ever
tasted. Bring ice skates and skate in the "pond" at City Hall. . .its free.
Here I go, in spite of my self. .Check out the World's Biggest Bookstore on
Yonge Street and the great shops in Yorktown. The rest you can investigate
yoourself.

#37 of 65 by headdoc on Sat Feb 4 16:25:06 1995:

Also read item 13 here in travel, there's some info on Toronto in that.

#38 of 65 by cascade on Tue Jun 13 21:09:55 1995:

:help
paris is always a great choice for a trip to Europe. There4 are in-
expensive hotels and restaurants, if your budget is tight.
Has anyone been to the Cascades of Washington State?.

#39 of 65 by rcurl on Wed Jun 14 19:03:28 1995:

The mountains? (Or the waterslides?? :)). I've been over the
highway that crosses the Cascades in northern WA - spectacular.
But I've only hiked and climbed further south in CA (well, we
did walk in a couple of miles, just to get a better look).
