Wonderful...hope you can contribute to the discussions. I'd love to hear what you have to say.
Like, for surely. (to be said completely with Janice valley girl accent) We can always use new newbies!
well thank you very much.. =) I guess I'll start a new topic then. what do you guys think of the supposed incubbus and succubus encounters? Mayn people have reported the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night pinned to their beds with the feeling that they are being sat on by some force. Many also feel sexually aroused by these "forces" so the whole who incubus or succubus encounter begins. I think these are perfect examples of sleep paralysis and hypnopomic hallucinations. I've been reading some case histiry of human hallucinations, both drug induced and that of normal brain activity. Hypnoomic hallucinations (those occuring upon waking) are very common. In the hypnopomic state, the brain cannot instantaneously switch from dreaming to a waking state, and the dream extends into the waking period. This state combined with normal sleep paralysis can be very frieghtening experiences. All cultures thru the ages have reported incubus annd succubus encounters. They are called different things, hags, demons, elves, little people. Is it possible that so many people can have the same hallucination, or is there some actual truth to this? Jung believed it was a racial memory implanted in our genes eons ago when our ancestors awoke in a dark cave and panicked at the presence of a predator... Any thoughts??
Well, I've certainly experienced waking up, but having pieces of the dream carry over. Not in this exact context, but for instance I'll dream of being around another person, and when I wake up I can still 'feel' their presence, even though they're not there. So, it's possible that a dream of being attacked by a demon could also leak over into half-wakefulness and lead to 'feeling' the succubus' presence. The feeling of being held down could just be due to the intensity of that feeling - similar to dreaming of being in the desert and waking up with a dry mouth.
Yes I understand that. I too have woken up in the middle of the night and felt the bonds of sleep paralysis. It's a scary thing. You can't move, yet your mind is fully awake. Fear takes over your mind and the brain produces hallucinations. You "see" images in your room. You "feel" these images touching you or whatever. The increased oxygen amounts via blodd in your ears causes sounds to be louder than they actually are, so you even "hear" these demons talking to you...But you'd think with all human minds being different, we'd see different images attacking us.. Yet everyone reports similar things. also, this makes me wonder if this type of occurance has anything to do with alien abductions. Are these instances just another form of the Succubus experience?
also sleep paralysis is a natural thing. While we are dreaming the brain paralyses our bodies, otherwise we'd act our dreams. However, somtimes things go wrong and we wake up prematurely while our bodies are still paralysed. We feel a great weight on our chests as if something were sitting on us and holding us down... spooky what the human mind is capable of.
<erg, lesbian succubi...> Skye, the connection you've made here between Succbus incounters and alien aductions is a facination one indeed! They are a lot of similaities, for instance aductees are often awaken from their sleep by a bright light, and become completely paralysed. It could well be that the pheonominon of alien abduction is simply a evolved for of Succubus incounters. Some questions: You say that everyone reports similar images of Succubus incounters, what is a typicla exaple of these images? Also, do those who experience Succubus incounters think that they've raped by the succubus/incubus? I'm wondering because similar experiences of sexual violation are also frequently experienced by alien abductees.
Hello Bob! Yes I too have read the reports of sexual encounters with aliens... The typical succubus/incubus experience with start out with the classic sleep paralysis... forced down onto the bed. heavy weight on the chest area... People report seeing images.. black swirly clouds lingering in front of their faces, sometimes they have penetrating eyes. Some report seeing the beings across the room or decribe them as hag like with mounds of wavy black hair. Like I described earlier..people will report these creatures talking to them. they often speak as if they were talking backwards...this is of course due to and increase of oxygenated blood in the ears... the hallucinations do cause sexual excitment, however I don't think there have been actual reports of sexual intercourse..not sure on that one..most report feeling something holding their hands and just riding on them..explaining the cultures that believe that they are elves that come into your room at night and ride you like a horse. The reports of alien sexual attacks however are different.. the people actually see the aliens and feel them having intercourse with them. Perhaps the incubus/succubus encounters have evolved into something different. Or it could be that the alien encounters are really happening. The reason I brought up the whole alien link is that abductees report sleep paralysis just before the aliens come and get them. It's sort of like a signal to the abductees and they know to expect an abduction.
Well, yes, but it would certainly be possible to *belive* that a 'succubus' has had intercourse with you, just as it would be possible to belive that a similarly imagined 'alien' had intercourse with you. Haven't some 'abductees' reported being immobilized without physical bonds?
Yes, I believe that's something abductees report very commonly. I can't think of many accounts of alien abduction where it wasn't mentioned.
Right. Couldn't that be equivalent to the 'paralysis' reported by succubus victims?
Yes. what i was comparing was that the alien abductions and incubus experiencs could both be forms of sleep paraylsis and hypnopomic hallucinations... I am not trying to discredit that alien abductions don't exist. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they were real... I was just pointing out the similarities of the two. Are alien encounters just evolved forms of incubus encounters? Or are they totally different?
Decidedly and interesting theory.
Oh, thank you kind sir.... I really do try. =)
Hmmmm...interesting topic. Skye, I've never experienced sleep paraylsis that I'm aware of. Oddly, though, there was a 5-6 year period when I was in middle school and high school, where both of my arms would be totally asleep after I woke up. I assume it had to do with the position I slept in (lying on my stomach, with my arms crossed, and under my head). This happened very regulaly, and was more of an annoyance than anything. I would end up using the shoulder muscles to swing the dead weight of my arms over on top of the alarm clock to shut it off. And it would only last about a minute. I know the mindset during the period immeadiately following waking up is not well understood. A navy buddy of mine was charged with assaulting a superior officer, when the officer woke him up by yelling at him about something. My friend immeadiately jumped up and slugged the officer in the face. Hard. He told the court martial judge that he didn't remember a thing, and was not punished (I'm sure it helped that his lawyer was very good). So its interesting that legally, one is not responsible for their action during the first few moments they wake up. It would be interesting if they could change it to the first few hours after you wake up, eh?
I've experienced the arm thing too, mostly after falling asleep in class. In my case, it's only lasted a few seconds, and is more disconcerting than annoying because it does feel like your arms are being held or bound.
but you can do cool things to your arm(s) that would normally be beyond your pain threshhold, such as lighting your fingers on fire...pulling out your thumbnail...bending your pinkie back to touch your wrist...etc.
You've tried this because....?
boredom I would guess, I have days when I'd do that.
Dan, I've done this because I'm completely made of rubber.
Oh, of course.
Evil spawn of gumby...
I happen to be the bastard son of Gumby....Ethel Mermin was my mother. They met in a gay bar in San Francisco in 1963. She was dressed as a man. He was dressed as a pencil.
The bartender, meanwhile, was dressed as the San Diego Chicken.
You were there? Wait.....they told me about *you*. Weren't you the over zealous wine steward?
Yes, that would be me!
OH MY!! how this topic has progressed since I last posted..!
People around these parts like to take things, such as items, slow. They frown upon making a new post, until you are willing to think about what it is you are going to say for a good long time. In a sense, grex is like molasses. Which reminds me, Old Man Jenkins sure could make some delicious molasses. Why I was practically raised on the stuff. One day he was whittling some pencils, or something and he told me the most amazing story. This is something I'll never forget. I'll carry this story to my old age. I'll tell this stoory to my children and grandchildren, over and over. It goes like this.............ummmmmm.....hmmmmmm. Hold on, let me see........shoot!!...I'm drawing a blank!
