2 wrong, last 2 I didn't bother (I hate solving geometry at breakfast :) ).

#3 of 36 by scg on Sat Aug 12 20:10:55 1995:

The only one I didn't get is 10, and I haven't finished working on it yet.

#4 of 36 by gregc on Sun Aug 13 00:57:36 1995:

I got 9 out of 10, but I disagree with #10. I think the solution should
be 15 degrees, answer B.

This is what I was having trouble with - #10. I got 120 degrees (!), so I
think I need to review my geometry a bit. If angle "ABC" is x degrees, which
is the vertex?k I was assuming the middle letter...

Here is the expanded answer key:

1. (C) If you're unlucky you'll get a blue and a brown sock
the first two tries, but the third try you'll have to get
either a blue or a brown sock, which will make a pair with
one of the first two socks.

2. (C) Houses that have fewer than 6 rooms is 10 (given).
Houses that have 6, 7, or 8 rooms is X (unknown). Houses
that have more than 8 rooms is 4 (given). The total is 25.
   10 plus X plus 4 must equal 25, so X must be 11.

3. (D) A church is a religious type of building as a hymn
is a religious type of song.

4. (C) There are really two sequences going on here. Notice
that the even terms make a sequence by themselves: 0, 2, 4,
6, 8... so the next term is 10.

5. (E) George Washington is only superficially known for the
cherry tree incident. John Hancock is only superficially
   known for his famous signature.

6. (B) Add B to both sides of the comparison. Since A plus B
is greater than C because the sum of two sides of a triangle
is always greater than the third side, you have your answer.

7. (C) Total number of people are:
       (a) Blonds WITHOUT blue eyes (14 minus 5 equals 9)
       (b) Blue-eyed people who are NOT blond (8 minus 5 equals 3)
       (c) Blue-eyed blond (5)
       Adding a, b, and c we get 9 plus 3 plus 5 equals 17.

8. (D) Think of the times 12:12 and 1:01, whose difference
   is 49 minutes.

9. (C) One diagonal of the square is the radius of 5, so
the other diagonal is also 5 since diagonals are equal.

10. (C) Use the fact that angle ABE is equal to 20 degrees
and angle A is equal to 20 degrees to make the triangle
    AEB isosceles.

By the way, the author of this test is Dr. Gary Gruber.
The article states he is a recognized authority on standardized
tests and critical thinking strategies.

>"a recognized authority on standardized test and critical thinking
>strategies"...

Ugh. No wonder the nations kids are testing so low. :)

Thanks for posting these Mary.

You are welcome.

#14 of 36 by gregc on Mon Aug 14 11:14:08 1995:

The explanation for #10, is a non-explanation. Ok, AEB is an isoceles
triangle. I still don't see how that helps.

#15 of 36 by wjw on Mon Aug 14 16:47:35 1995:

I agree on #10. I don't see how that helps. I got all other 9 right.

#16 of 36 by orinoco on Mon Aug 14 23:40:50 1995:

what's this doing in test? err...besides the obvious pun, o' course....

#17 of 36 by chelsea on Tue Aug 15 14:14:24 1995:

What pun? ;-)

#18 of 36 by lilmo on Mon Aug 21 22:18:21 1995:

The explanation for #10 is bad, but the answer is correct (more later)

BTW< a church is NOT a building, it is the ppl. you can use "church" as a
adjective, to say "church building", but "church " is the ppl IN the building,
so the answer for #3 should be C, b/c a museum (some museums) contain relics.

Also, GW never DID the cherry tree incident, so that's a bad analogy anyways.

#19 of 36 by aruba on Thu Aug 24 02:39:12 1995:

I finally solved #10, but it wasn't pretty. If anyone has a concise solution,
I'd like to see it.

#20 of 36 by remmers on Fri Aug 25 13:27:45 1995:

My solution isn't pretty either. Makes one wonder if that was
the question they really intended to ask.

I finally wrote down #10 and am working on it more carefully. I apparently
misreaad it before, as I now have down to every angle but EDC and DEB
identified, and once I get off of Grex I'll really try to figure it out.

#23 of 36 by lilmo on Tue Aug 29 04:43:38 1995:

If remmers or aruba could give me a hint as to their solutions for #10, I
might be able to simplify it/them.

Thanks... it was also linked to the games cf, but after this one, so I
saw it later.

#26 of 36 by rywfol on Wed Jan 24 07:45:30 1996:

Personally I think that question 8 is incorrect, since it does not state
otherwise their is no reason to believe that a time of 23:23 a mere 37
minutes different from 00:00 is permissible by adopting a 24-hour clock
format. Stil, I guess since they give multiple options that implies the
limitation of a twelve hour clock.

A while ago, an IQ test designed for use by young children was given to a
gorilla who had been taught sign language. Although the gorilla was certainly
intelligent, she got a surprisingly low score on the test. Among her
mistakes was failing to identify a hamburger as food, instead choosing
flowers.

#29 of 36 by rywfol on Sat Jan 27 06:41:35 1996:

Hamburgers are food!! I think the testers may have got that one wrong. ;)

I know they are, rywfol....

#31 of 36 by lee on Mon Dec 16 02:57:31 1996:

This is like Jeopardy. I see the answers, but where are the questions?

#32 of 36 by chelsea on Mon Dec 16 14:29:58 1996:

The questions were in the Summer Agora of 1995, item #103.

#33 of 36 by lee on Tue Dec 17 02:44:39 1996:

(Silly question, how do you get to summer '95 agora?)
