Grex Synthesis Item 97: Me? Like Celts?? Why do you say that..?
Entered by ladyevil on Sun Sep 29 03:45:26 UTC 1996:

Do you hide the Shortbread when company is around?

Do you place the Enya CD's well out of guest's easy sight?

Does your name have a Mc, Mac, or an O' in it? If not, do you have the
shameful wish that it did?

In short- are you a CLOSET CELTOPHILE?

Don't be ashamed..many of us are, and scientific studies have shown that it
is acttually NORMAL for people to want to kiss the Blarney Stone.

So, tell us about it, get it off your chest- what Celtic perversity are YOU
into?

I love misty gloomy chilly weather. That's about it.

#2 of 46 by bjorn on Sun Sep 29 16:18:38 1996:

I play my Enya CDs all the time, a piece of my jewelry could be considered
either Volsung or Celtic since the historical accuracy is similar.
Hide Shortbread? NEVER. I love to stay out in Thunderstorms just to get
soaked by the rainwater.

#3 of 46 by ladyevil on Mon Sep 30 01:48:11 1996:

Is that Kilt yer wearin Regimental, laddie?

#4 of 46 by kami on Mon Sep 30 01:56:48 1996:

Well, hey, when I drink at all, I'd sooner it was Irish-- whiskey that is,
mist'll do. Yum!

#5 of 46 by brighn on Mon Sep 30 06:07:46 1996:

I... I identify with leprechauns.
*blush and face in hands*

#6 of 46 by blondval on Mon Sep 30 12:45:40 1996:

I confess...I bought a Celtic table runner and pin on flight layover in
Shannon Ireland while jetting from the Ukraine one year. And it cost me more
money than I had spent the whole summer in Ukraine...*blushes deeply*

#7 of 46 by robh on Mon Sep 30 13:17:56 1996:

<robh suspects brighn of having a pot of gold somewhere, and starts
following him around>

Well, my name is Henderson, but that's the English form of the
original MacEnruig, which also became "MacKendrick" in modern Scotland.
Does that count as changing my name?

#8 of 46 by brighn on Mon Sep 30 21:21:48 1996:

You can have it, Rob, but you gotta kiss me...

#9 of 46 by bjorn on Tue Oct 1 14:37:28 1996:

Sorry, but I have to do this:
NEWS FLASH!
Lucky tells the Trix Rabbit to kiss his blarney stone!

#10 of 46 by kami on Tue Oct 1 18:19:38 1996:

aaaaaaargh!!!!!!
ah, that feels better.

#11 of 46 by anne on Tue Oct 1 19:22:00 1996:

<anne grins> I actually have kissed the blarney stone... The ruins
of the castle are wonderful....

<anen remembers>

#12 of 46 by brighn on Tue Oct 1 20:30:09 1996:

*does not recall anne kissing either of his blarney stones, an regrets having
no recollection of the event...*

#13 of 46 by birdlady on Tue Oct 1 20:37:00 1996:

I am most certainly not a closet Celt. I have every Enya cd, look so Irish
that it's dispecable, can't wait 'til graduation so I can backpack around
Ireland on a teacher's salary (hah!), and drive everyone at work crazy by
wishing them a happy solstice/equinox. <big eg>

#14 of 46 by ladyevil on Wed Oct 2 03:43:33 1996:

So, tell us- what's it LIKE to be openly celtic?

#15 of 46 by kami on Wed Oct 2 06:40:05 1996:

Frustrating; you have to deal with people whose preconceptions of your
beliefs come from bad Llewellyn books, who confuse your culture with a
basketball team, who think you're on the same bandwagon they've just hopped
up on when actually, you wish they'd get the hell off. Other than that, fun.

Hi Anne! Don't hear from you often enough. How's life? Pass on a hug for
me to the rest of your household.

#16 of 46 by brighn on Wed Oct 2 15:47:03 1996:

What?
You mean this isn't a basketball religion???????
*stands in front of the LArry Bird photo on his Celtic altar. Erm, I knew
that. Really, I did.

#17 of 46 by dang on Wed Oct 2 17:34:23 1996:

Well, I'm planning an altar to Mt. Dew... does that count? :)

#18 of 46 by kami on Wed Oct 2 17:42:09 1996:

Larry Bird as an avatar of Bile'-- the world tree, tall and dark, reaching
the heavens with big, strong roots, a god of sudden death and soaring
heights? Naaaah, it's a bit of a stretch. So, who's Larry Bird anyway?

I'm sure you'll rebound just fine from the shock, Brighn.

#19 of 46 by robh on Wed Oct 2 17:50:21 1996:

Tall and DARK???

<robh falls over, laughing convulsively>

(Since kami doesn't know, I'll mention, Larry Bird is very caucasian
and very blond.)

#20 of 46 by kami on Wed Oct 2 17:55:24 1996:

Oh. I like basketball, but I don't get to watch it on TV. After I finished
writing I sort of thought I might have goofed. Do you think I've got
Larry *Bird* confused with *Air* Jordan?

#21 of 46 by birdlady on Wed Oct 2 19:30:09 1996:

Kami had the best explanation of what it's like to be an open Celt. Those
witticisms are what make me love this cf. =) Brighn...sometimes you make
me laugh so hard I want to hit you!!! <growls then realizes how dumb she
sounds>

<birdy has no idea what is making her so lovable today...weird..oh well>
<shrug>

#22 of 46 by kami on Wed Oct 2 19:34:23 1996:

Birdy, Cute is NOT a Celtic virtue. Stop it right now! <g>

#23 of 46 by anne on Wed Oct 2 20:17:04 1996:

Kami- you haven't heard much from me because I haven't been around
much. <grin> I'll pass on that hug. :) Other then that,
things are going rather well. :)

#24 of 46 by faile on Wed Oct 2 22:35:23 1996:

*laughs* btw, dang, did you intend teh "rebound" pun??? Just wondering.

#25 of 46 by bjorn on Thu Oct 3 01:43:18 1996:

<teleports to Annapolis, removes his jackal-mask, and falls asleep on his
cousin's grave>

#26 of 46 by kami on Thu Oct 3 02:54:46 1996:

I almost went to school in Annapolis, at St. Johns.
Anne, tell us a story, eh?
So- what makes Celts different and/or intiguing, to you, folks?

#27 of 46 by birdlady on Thu Oct 3 13:49:07 1996:

Cute isn't a Celtic virtue?!? <pout> It is *extrememly* hard for me to look
mean unless I mean it, though. It's hard to be intimidating when you're 5'4"
tall. <g>

<birdy hugs bjorn>

#28 of 46 by kami on Thu Oct 3 22:08:01 1996:

Mean is not a requirement, 's far as I know. How about fierce? Determined?
Wise? Beautiful? Excellent of eye and hand? Eloquent? Truthful?
Honourable? Not necessarily visual qualities, but Celtic.

#29 of 46 by jenna on Thu Oct 3 23:33:44 1996:

I indentify with Scottish men not wearing anything under thier kilts.
I also like faeries, but those aren't uniquely cletic so nyah.
(celtic) humm... other than castles and folksongs... <shrug>
I guess I'm not a closet celtophile after all.
<gets out of the item, but really just had to make the kilt comment>

#30 of 46 by brighn on Fri Oct 4 04:57:28 1996:

*ponders wearing a kilt for jenna*

#31 of 46 by dang on Fri Oct 4 15:40:26 1996:

(RE 24: faile, it wasn't me, but kami. Judging from what I know of her, I'd
guess she did it on purpose. :)
Well, I'm not a celtophile. Don't know enough about them. I know that Meg
is, but I haven't had a chance to learn.

#32 of 46 by fireball on Fri Oct 4 18:16:44 1996:

<peeks his head in, laughs breiefly, and then ducks back out>
oh, hi everyone :)
I just felt like entering something :)
pardon the drift :)

#33 of 46 by kami on Fri Oct 4 20:29:43 1996:

Thanks, Dang, it was me, and of *course* I did it on purpose ;)

Hi Fireball! What's up? Wanna come skating with my boys again?

#34 of 46 by jenna on Fri Oct 4 20:41:25 1996:

<laughs> hey... do you even have one, brighn?

#35 of 46 by faile on Mon Oct 7 05:10:13 1996:

Sorry Dang, Kami. I didn't mean to attribute a good (?) pun to the wrong
person.
<set drift=off>
I think what interests me about the celts (other than the kilt thing) is that
I've been to the brittish isles...and when I was there was when I started
becoming interesttred in pagan religions... it started me on my path.

#36 of 46 by birdlady on Mon Oct 7 18:41:56 1996:

Kami -- I meant intimidating, but said "mean". Oops... =) I can look very
intimidating if I wish to, but thankfully hardly feel the need to. Gray eyes
*can* be useful sometimes.

#37 of 46 by ladyevil on Mon Oct 7 23:21:37 1996:

Gee, I don't think I'm at all Celtic by those traits.. *sigh*
Intimidating?
Beautiful?
Fierce?
Determined?
Eloquent?
Truthful?
It just doesn't seem that i can possibly fit those things..
Now, WISE.. that's me all over! *grin*

#38 of 46 by jenna on Tue Oct 8 02:54:58 1996:

I don't think i fit celtic traits at all.
I have curly, dark mousy brown hair, a slight jewish nose, black eyebrows,
big bones, big breasts and an occasional yiddish tone in my voice. ;}

#39 of 46 by kami on Tue Oct 8 07:56:19 1996:

Jenna- so your Druish? a Jewid? <g>
I don't think the physical traits matter at all. Remember that the Celts
covered all of Europe *and* traded with the Vikings, so they intermarried
with just about everyone. The black eyebrows and big frame, although generally
found in different "strains", both show up in "Celtic" people. But who
cares! I tend to think it's more about the values and beliefs and behavior
you find most suitable, and maybe in the relationship with god/gods.'
