Grex Synthesis Item 90: This is the psychic item- if you're reading it, you know what it's about.
Entered by kami on Wed Mar 27 04:51:34 UTC 1996:

Seriously- this item is about the sorts of psychic skills/talents people
have observed or experienced. What are they? Where do they come from? Are
they "real" or "subjective", or just fooling ourselves and on what do you
base that conclusion? Are they inborn or learned/learnable? Does everyone
have some "psychic" talents or are people who have them (not just those who
know and use them) unusual? How do they touch your life?

OK, does anyone have the skill of finding? My kitty, Catshi, disappeared
just before or during the last serious snow we had- the one that dumped
about 6 inches around my house? She has just begun going out at all,
and I think she went out and then got confused when the snow muffled
smells. I'd like to know if she's alive or not, outdoors or in, near or
far, etc. so I have some idea how and where to look. We really miss her.
Thanks.

#2 of 42 by selena on Wed Mar 27 07:41:29 1996:

I'm only moderately good at finding, and that being generous..

#3 of 42 by kami on Wed Mar 27 16:38:50 1996:

You're marvelously good at finding things within your range of perception,
which isn't small, but I'm too ashamed to ask you for favors.

#4 of 42 by birdlady on Wed Mar 27 18:30:50 1996:

Hmmm...finding? Nope. Coyote plays with me too much. =) I can usually
establish links with close friends simply because I'm so empathic I can't help
it. My nickname should be "Sponge". =) I often have dreams that tell me
what to do or warn me of things about to happen, but I've never really used
the term "psychic". I tend to "see" more than anything else...

#5 of 42 by kami on Wed Mar 27 18:50:56 1996:

Birdlady, you just named three things;
empathy,
precog dreams (short range)
and "seeing"
How are these not psychic? What are they? Have you a prefered term?

#6 of 42 by birdlady on Wed Mar 27 19:22:51 1996:

Well, I like the term psychic as it applies, but I just can't help thinking
about those late-night infomercials. ;) I'm also modest and cautious, so
I don't like going around telling people all this. I'd call myself "very
aware" of things before I'd say, "I'm psychic". <shrug> I've just learned
to watch out for myself...I was taught a very scary lesson last April.

#7 of 42 by kami on Wed Mar 27 19:50:50 1996:

I don't tend to refer to myself as "psychic", although the one or two times
I've been "shown off at" (can't call it much else) by professsional psychics,
and they trot out "you're very psychic, you know" as a come-on line to stroke
the ego, I just sort of chuckle. Wonder what they'd do if I started asking
very specific and technical questions on how to deal with various perceptual
excesses or limitations? Or what to do with various different sorts of
"people without bodies"? They aren't used to folks who take such things for
granted, I suppose.

What happened in April, or don't I want to know?

#8 of 42 by birdlady on Thu Mar 28 18:57:52 1996:

Last April, I went to go visit Conan (philoman) to see how our relationship
would work IRL. Well, he basically attacked me and clipped my wings off so
that I couldn't fly enough to see (totem reference!) I was quite messed up
for a while, and I kept having very scary dreams full of gory details. It
took a smudging and a sleep "potion" to help me get rid of them. I don't know
if he did any of it, but he kept playing it up like he had. I had made the
mistake of telling him about my gifts and totem, which I eventually learned
from my shaman is a BIG NO-NO! I learned my lesson, and every day since, I've
kept pretty much to myself when it comes to personal questions.

#9 of 42 by kami on Fri Mar 29 02:48:29 1996:

I've never been long on discretion, but I tend to like to "look harmless".
That's one hell of a scary story, and I'm glad you survived as well as you
did. The world's as full of assholes as it is of marvelous folks, it's just
a matter of finding the right ones. Keep workin' on it, eh?

Interesting that you chose words from two sensory modes to describe how you
function: fly- that is, motion: kinesthetic, and see- visual. I'm also
dominant kinisthetic, secondary visual, with hearing a *distant* third, if
that. Hard to learn without eyecontact or print or something, but I can
learn most things I watch a person do, especially if I watch closely enough
to feel in my body how they do it.

Others?

#10 of 42 by arwen on Sat Mar 30 04:06:41 1996:

Kami! Hi lady! If tkity oh heck
if she hasn't shown up, e-mail me. I did a ritual with Lhianna and we found
her cat in three days! love ya....gotta fly!

#11 of 42 by kami on Sat Mar 30 06:25:46 1996:

Wow! Arwen showed up. Now *that's* a psychic phenomena...<g>

#12 of 42 by anne on Sat Mar 30 08:40:42 1996:

It's like waaay cool. :)

#13 of 42 by selena on Mon Apr 1 02:35:45 1996:

*sigh* Kami, do you, or don't you want me to try to look for your cat?
I'd rather not guess at this right now- my judgement is *gone*, cause
of lots of weird and disturbing things that happened this last week.

#14 of 42 by kami on Mon Apr 1 18:13:37 1996:

I'll take all the help I can get, but I hope this item will be good for
more than me whining about my cat. We all have interesting skills, perceptions
and experiences which, shared, help convince each other we're not nuts. <g>

#15 of 42 by bjorn on Tue Apr 2 16:28:02 1996:

I have few psychic - although iI prefer the term *psionic* - abilities,
but none of them would be of any use in finding your cat, considering the fact
that I cannot control my destination through astral projection. And most of
my other abilities center around my close friends - rending them utterly
useless in this case.

#16 of 42 by kami on Tue Apr 2 21:24:39 1996:

Bjorn, patience, dear. Control comes with grounding, practice, and a
very strong sense of self, of your physical and metaphysical place in the
world, as well as a very clear focus on where you are going, when and why.
It's not something I'm very good at. Selena is.

#17 of 42 by kami on Wed Apr 3 05:48:33 1996:

Hey everybody, I'm HAPPY; got home from shopping, looked up at the beautiful
full moon (I count it for all three nights, not just the middle one), and
heard Catshi, my poor missing kitty, meowing in the neighbor's yard. She's
HOME. The family is whole again. Mama takes care of us all. Prrrrr!

Ok, set drift=off. I'll go chortle to myself a while. Thanks for your
help and concern, folks.

#18 of 42 by robh on Wed Apr 3 08:15:18 1996:

We see the obvious solution - if you need to locate something,
just post a request in Synthesis, and we will unconciously use
our powers to help you find it. Or something.

#19 of 42 by brighn on Wed Apr 3 10:02:57 1996:

I've lost my innocence.

#20 of 42 by bjorn on Wed Apr 3 14:19:45 1996:

What innocence?
<bjorn claps his hands over his mouth quickly>

Re#16: I'll certainly try - though convincing my body to have my mind do
something after I'm asleep is certainly difficult. O well . . .

#21 of 42 by robh on Wed Apr 3 16:07:58 1996:

brighn, St. Anthony himself couldn't find your innocence. >8)

#22 of 42 by kami on Wed Apr 3 16:55:09 1996:

Do you miss it, Brighn? Make a new one?

Actually, I sort of thought about doing some sort of formal "beacon spell",
with a bit of Catshi's hair and food and all, runic structures lend themselves
well to that sort of thing by the way Bjorn, but just going out and talking
to the "fairies at the bottom of the garden" a few nights, and the moon,
and letting my intention and my welcome be clear and unequivocal would seem
to have been enough. And under the full moon even... (happy sigh).

#23 of 42 by brighn on Wed Apr 3 17:24:59 1996:

*brighn is so terribly abused here*
*brighn finds his wives' and girlfriends' arms, seeking solace*

#24 of 42 by birdlady on Wed Apr 3 19:08:22 1996:

<Sarah is not one of Brighn's beloved but will hug him anyways>
I'm very happy to hear about yor cat, Kami!

#25 of 42 by brighn on Wed Apr 3 20:18:50 1996:

*hugs sarah*

#26 of 42 by kami on Wed Apr 3 20:58:08 1996:

*Kami thinks Brighn likes this sort of abuse, or at least the excuse to
seek solace*
*Kami hugs Brighn anyway*

#27 of 42 by jimhoyt on Fri Apr 5 13:06:20 1996:

Hmmm, I was struck with this bit from Bjorn back in #15:
"my (other) abilities center around my close friends - rending them utterly
 useless..."
Sorry...I'm experiencing a bout of "literalism"...
;-)

#28 of 42 by bjorn on Fri Apr 5 14:54:22 1996:

Hmmm, I though it would be relativly easy to understand what I meant . . .
Basically, my other psionic/psychic abilities are only useful in relation to
my close friends - for the have to do with a limited form of location (which
works only between me and the friend in question), and some telekinetic
shows of affection . . .

#29 of 42 by kami on Fri Apr 5 18:26:36 1996:

Bjorn, it's a *joke* ok? Jim was implying that your abilities rendered
you *friends* useless...<g>

#30 of 42 by bjorn on Fri Apr 5 18:55:12 1996:

Jokes are meaningless for a man who has a morbid sense of humor and the utter
lack of most other emotions. Hopfully I'll soon be devoid of emotion
altogether.

Yes, I get what Jim implied and well, you've read my spiel. Literal humor
- not something I should really have a problem with since I occasionaly use
it while gaming. O well . . .

#31 of 42 by fireball on Wed Jul 31 00:37:58 1996:

hi all!
I'm back :)
and, to keep from drifting, I shall contrivute <gasp> :)
My biggest talent, that I know of is empathy
although most of it is sub-concious, I have been gaining SOME conncious
control over it...
other than that...hmm...a few minor things...
I think I'm slightly pre-cog, again sub-conciously...
I also have VERY good instincts...i.e. I get a feeling that I REALLY should
leave, and shortly after I do, something bad happens where I was...
now, if only I listenend to 'em more :/
other than that?
well, I found that I'm somewhat of a living battery/channe;, but I suppose
that's more magical than psychic...<shrug>
can't think of any others offhand...
what does everyone think (esp. those who know me...)?
<wavies>

#32 of 42 by birdlady on Wed Jul 31 13:35:12 1996:

<birdy is going to respond after she puts her eys back in her head and her
mouth shuts>
I'm still in shock that you responded...much more that you're actually on
Grex...  =)

I agree with you totally. But then again, we've discussed this a lot, and
you know that already.
<wavies and a hug if permitted>

#33 of 42 by kami on Wed Jul 31 18:01:01 1996:

Jeremy, the "battery" thing is partly "adolescent surge". Enjoy it. The
pre-cog will probably increase with practice, the empathy become first
more, then less obtrusive as you learn to deal with it. Have fun!

#34 of 42 by slinkie on Sat Dec 14 16:05:37 1996:

Sometimes I write down things that have a meaning later in life. It's weird.
Like when I was in junior high, I wrote this story about the way I wanted my
life to be and I had chosen names randomly. The protagonist was basically
the way I saw myself and she had a very close friend, whom for the purpose
of this response, I will name X.

Years later, I met a person by the name X who is now my best friend.

Also, I have this odd connection with dates. When I write down a date
somewhere as part of something, it shows up later in my own life as
significant. When I say date, I mean something like "Monday the 1st " or
something like that.

Am I just crazy or does this mean something?
(Please, serious responses only; I'm new to all this)

#35 of 42 by kami on Sun Dec 15 07:36:35 1996:

Slinkie, it sounds to me like when you write from inspiration, or just
"stream of consciousness", you are sensing patterns which lead to probably
outcomes. I bet you haven't found, for example, that by *wanting* something
to happen on a certain date, such as "Jane Doe will go with me to the
prom on May 10th" or whatever, that you could make it come true- that's a
different skill entirely, and generally not amenable to that direct a coersion.
On the other hand, people tend to perceive patterns, to "create" them, where
they don't really exist (such as in phone numbers and the like) because it's
easier for our minds to deal with information that way, so you may just be
remembering those instances because of the co-incidence of what you wrote
and what came to pass. YOu choose which explanation to believe...

Oh- and welcome.

#36 of 42 by slinkie on Sun Dec 15 18:54:48 1996:

Actually, there was something I wanted. I finally got it exactly two years
after I'd started wishing for it.

It's not like I have any predictive power or anything. But it does seem eerie
that events pop up after I'd written and long forgotten about them.

I don't know <shrug>

Btw, what is pre-cog?

#37 of 42 by robh on Sun Dec 15 19:22:25 1996:

Pre-cog = short for "precognition", literally, knowing something
before it happens. It comes from the same root as "cognizant"
and "recognize", which means knowing something again.
But you knew that, of course. >8)

#38 of 42 by hokshila on Sun Dec 15 21:34:01 1996:

Precognition to me is knowing that something is going to happen before
it does. One of the problems that I have with precognition is that I tend to
attach meanings to the knowledge. Foe example, last week I began to see my
mother's house on Christmas Day. My father, who has lung cancer, wasn't there
and the house was quite. No presents, etc. I didn't say anything about this
to anyone, I just waited. Then, four days later, Dad had a blood clot go from
his leg to his lung and he collapsed. When I got the news, I added it to the
precognition and said "That's it, Dad is going to die." Well, I put myself
through the letting go, which is a good thing to do, and now there is some
improvement in his condiditon. He will be in the hospital through christmas,
and hopefully, stilll breathing. I believe that as I grow, I will learn how
to "look into" these procognitions to be able to see the situation surrounding
the picture.
Well, that's that for what it's worth.

#39 of 42 by font on Wed Jan 14 17:22:44 1998:

Erg. If I'd been psychic, I would have put the response from (can't remember
the number, something small) astral travel/channeling item here. But at the
same time, I still think it was apropriate for some reason. <font boggles>
