The only stuff I've read comes from the enormous Golden Dawn compendium by Israel Regardie, and that ain't much. If you want to see it, mail me and I can loan it to you.
I think it only becomes really a "danger" when you understand what it is tht you're doing. Hopefully by that time, you'll be able to handle any, "danger". Rob, is that book any good, I've seen it, and thumbed through it, but never had the guts to slap down...$$$$$...big bucks for it. Isn't Enochian, a language/system that was learned from angels essentially? Or was that the angel cards... -phaedrus
You've kind of got it right, Phaedrus. The Enochian system was allegedly told to occultist John Dee by angels, speaking in the Enochian language. That, or Dee was on some powerful mushrooms. >8) IMHO, the Golden Dawn book is owrth it, then again I'm a Qabalist and I love studying all of those tables and charts and diagrams, and reading Hebrew. Well, trying to read Hebrew.
A good introduction to the Golden Dawn is one by Donald Michael
Kraig, called "Modern Magick". The cover is a little fantastic, but the
text inside is very solid Golden Dawn material, and covers that material
much more completely than most books on the subject.
Enochian magick is based on a tablet of syllables representing
componets of the names of the angels. In and of itself, summoning angels
is not particularly dangerous, however, the associated rituals of the
Opening by Watchtower and Closing by Watchtower can be used to summon all
manner of nasties astrally, and the majority of the ones, according to every
GD source I've read, tend to want a part of your personality and life in
return for whatever they offer. Yeesh. No thanks.
Quabbalism, and many of the supposedly Egyptian rituals that the
GD uses *are*, in my humble opinion, the real thing. It's a very sound
system ideologically, and it's goals are noble. I wouldn't want to have
to figure out Hebrew correspondencies for defence, though, when bein
attacked.
I've never felt a need to own that tome, although I went through a "tables and charts" period some years back- copied out what I needed from the copy in the college library. Bet UM has it, too. Learning tables of correspondence, the Tree of Life, some basic ritual constuction, etc. is good discipline. However, there's a reason the Rabbis would never teach Kabbalah to anyone but a married man over 40: it was thought that such a one might have enough grounding in reality, wisdom and experience to handle the concepts without wandering off into lala land. All those details can be rather seductive, you know. Danger is where you look for it, to some extent. Rob, I can help you a bit with the Hebrew, if you want. It would be fun.
I'd heard that, at one time, they would only teach you the Qabalah if you were married *or* over 35 years old. I guess they wanted to make sure you discovered the jots of sex before the joys of the Tree of Life, lest you be distracted from your mission of procreation. >8) Once you hit 35, you were a lost cause anyway, so why not let you learn? If I have any Hebrew questions, I'll ask you, Kami.
Enochian like Qabballah can lead you into some very beautiful and horrendus
places. Like Kami says danger is where you look for it. I have found the books
by Gerald J. Shueler very useful as well as the Golden Dawn

Well, hello stranger. Glad you're back. Tell me about Shueler- what's his slant? background? how readable were they? What other texts fit well with them? I went through a brief period of copying tables and charts and stuff out of the Proceedings of the Golden Dawn, etc., then decided I didn't want to live with that style. Good background material, though.
HEY Bryan, nice to see you posting!!
personally, i have trouble beliving this 'summoning angels' thing. i find it strange that anybody would belive they could 'summon' an angel or daemon. of course, you could argue that i cant understand it because i dont 'belive'.
I agree Jon, but I must admit, many people that I know who use this aren't doing too bad. I guess the final proof of it's power may be what happens to the person doing it. But I do agree, even it's origins seem a little bit fishy.
fishy? how so? speaking of magick, what is the difference between magick and magic. i do not mean magic as in the 'my little magic kit' kind. i mean the ancient persian magic, the 'real stuff' even if it seems kind of unbelivable.
Sorry to drift but I can't help thinking that the header on this item
reminds me of enoke mushrooms. They're the long thin ones....
I think Croweley made the popularized the Magik distinction. Magik as in ceremonial.
distinguishes the stuffy from the silly :)
That's definitly the other distinction he made:)
Hey there everyone. I know I am new but I just wanted to respond to this because i have just started seriously studying Enochian Magick and the only thing really dangerous about this study is the misuse of the powers that can be gained through the rituals. The rituals to summon the angels are meant to allow the magus access to enhanced abilities that are hidden deep in the subconcious and these can only be accessed after you go on to the next higher plane of conciousness. Enochian principles believe that each person evolves into their own divinity. We all evolved from minerals and such and after each evolvement we gained new abilities. Enochian Magick is a way to get abilities that are only available after we have cleared are Karmic debt. It really is facinating about the watchtowers and the Ayertyrs, so if you still would like to know more I will be more than willing to enlighten all! Keep in touch!
this is indeed quite interesting. Opening a whole range of discussion for this bunch. Super! What sources have you found that are reliable, or are you getting most info from your primary teacher? Do you have a sense of the probable pitfalls or stumbling blocks which face students in your tradition? I've noticed that each major path or tradition tends to attract a particular "personality type" or range thereof and they are prone to fall into certain common traps as they progress, although "enlightened" people all look similar in the end- simple and quietly intense... How are the watchtowers different in nature/use/form of address between Enochian tradition and Wiccan? I don't recognize the word "Ayertyrs"- looks like it should be related to the winds.
Keep talking Banshee!! I as well have never read anything that seemed reliable. Everyone that I know that practices it says simply, "well, if it's fake it work works, so who cares..." I think RobH knows a wee bit about this too but it's sooo hard to get him to fess up to it...
(Actually, robh knows next to nothing about the Enochian system of magic, but he would certainly like to hear more.)
Well, I stand corrected. (But not convinced;) Where'd Banshee go??
Hello again all this is Bryan Snowdon (now Shade) wondering if any one is still interested in Enochian out there? Phaedrus I am back so look out I plan to really burn up these lines with postings. So phaedrus do you believe in Ververs that open doorways summon Loa and allow the Gods to active part in human affairs?
Bryan!!! Glad to hear...err, see you! Yes I most certainly do, but in my case it's the Oricha, and not a symbol. I *do* believe in and see the arival of gods, (Oricha) or any other as a great blessing and gift. Most of the use of VeVe's that I've seen has been in African Witchcraft not the Religion. Looking forward to seeing you fill the place up with postings!!
