I just made a very surprising and delightful discovery! Beside the Brown Jug on South University there's a used bookstore...don't remember what the name is. Anyway, I happened in there on quite another errand today, and as is my custom, stopped to look over the astrology books--and 'lo what di I find nearby? Wax diety symbols, both human figure and the labia and phallus symbols. The human figures are reasonably accurate and complete, stand about a foot tall, and come in black, white, red and green. They have a wick for use in candle magic and cost: a whopping $2.25 each! Far out, eh?
That's the Dawn Treader. Nisi Shawl used to work there, she's a local Yoruba practitioner. I bought a couple of my Tarot decks there. Also, the Dawn Treader on Liberty Street has a good-sized occult section.
Guess where I'm going today...! Thanks, Rob!
There is place called Divination Web II that should be a goo cyber-pagan resource once it's completed. It is a good real time discussion area right now. (only open sometimes though) It's at bill.math.uconn.edu 9393
Thank's troy.
for books, i'm having fun at borders. i realize that i'm nought but a begginer, but it's worth a try1
Borders is a dangerous place!!!! Too many nifty books... I want them all!!!!
You also should *haunt* your used bookstores. Lots of folks dip into the "occult" (ooooh) and dip back out. They dump their poor books off and I have found many of mine there!
Good idea.... and there are several around here....
Too many books, too little time.
sleep? who needs sleep? you can sleep when you're dead <g>
yeah
I'm going to bed now. Pleasant dreams (ha, ha, ha, ha- evil grin).
be nice kami! and dawn treader does have quiete a few nifties there...for a decent price, too!
sorry, I guess that was my evil twin taking over the keyboard. don't be too traumatized over it.
errrr....something like that.....
If you can find the address for it, there's this place in Florida called Serpent's Occult. They deal in new and used occult books of all types; I recently got a catalog from them and they have a great selection...
Well, if you got a catelog, doesn't that give you the address? It might be worth writing to them to see about the books I'm missing (and some others I wish I had), although they are more in the genre of Celtic Studies than the occult. Where in Florida?
I think it's Ft. Myers, but I'll have to find the address and see...
oh- I used to know people there. Do please get me that address.
lemmee see! lemmee see! post it! :)
Yeah post it! please??
I FINALLY have the address for serpent's occult! it is: Serpent's Occult P.O. Box 290644 Pt. Orange, FL 32129 Ph: <904>-760-7675 I hope someone finds this useful!
Have any of you tried your local public library? Surprisingly, ours has a lot worth looking into. Via the state-wide loan program, I have found hundreds of books on this subject. Good ones that you wouldn't think a library would want to deal with. Give it a shot.
There are two in particular in Arizona worth adding to the list: Alpha Book Center 1928 E. McDowel cancel last line--should be 1928 E. McDowell Phoenix, AZ 85006 (602) 253-1223 You can pay by check or credit card. They carry a large variety of occult supplies, including hard to find herbs like Ambergris. They also(BOLLINES), athames, and deity figures. The second is The Herb Stop They carry an extended variety of herbs. The address is: 7121 E. 6th Ave., Scottsdale, AZ 85251 (602) 970-6157
Anybody know of specialty occult stores near Abilene, TX, approx 3-4 hrs from Dallas- Ft. Worth?
Surprisingly(spelled wrong but I don't really care!) Crazy Wisdom Bookstore has
a reasonable supply of occult and mythology kind of stuff. Personally I thought
it had mostly stuff that had to do with India{ but I was proved wrong.
surprisingly is spelt right- just not american, perhaps. Crazy Wisdom seems to have gotten better, more serious, in the last couple of years. Unfortunately, they still have more of Llewellyn's fluff than of serious resources for mythology, occultism, comparative religion, etc. Oh well, that's life. You can always order... Speaking of resources, since you seem to be in Ann Arbor, try dailing in to the Shining Lakes Grove bbs; 665-0552. It carries PODS (Pagan and Occult Distribution System), which has "echos" (analogous to conferences here, or maybe items) for various pagan-related topics. Let me know if you need help getting around in it.
For "serious" (i.e. acedemic) try Shaman Drum on State Street. Good on histroy, anthpology, sociology and esp. Amerind. Primary source material source <G>.
Thanks kami, tell me move about...whatever you were telling me about.
I don't know, celt, what were we talking about?
whatever kami..you were talking about....i dunno. Do you live in Ann Arbotr?
Yup, I live in Ann Arbor. I think we were talking about Crazy Wisdom bookstore at one point.
The Wheel of Life in Livonia. Neat store, terriffic staff.
md, I hadn't heard of that store. How does one get there from Ann Arbor?
There's a pretty cool store in Traverse City called Higher Self. They sell books on everything from tarot cards to palmistry to yoga. I got my copy of "The Tao of Pooh" there. They also carry incense, tarot cards, candles, dream catchers, crystals, massage oil, and various other items.
I can find my way to livonia blindfolded, but where is the wheel of life located in livonia?
Wheel of Life is in a strip mall on Plymouth Road, more toward the west side of town that the east. (I'm guessing.) On the south side of Plymouth Road. I really, really liked the staff, although I can't imagine what they made of me.
Could it be the Westland Mall? My cousins live two blocks off of Plymouth Rd. in Livonia, and we always go there...is it a new store? I've never seen it, unless I'm thinking of the wrong mall...
