How did they do the other night against Maine?

#3 of 30 by srw on Thu Oct 24 04:48:53 1996:

Shut them out. 3-0. !!

Maine is hurting from the sanctions and loss of top players.
They're a shadow of last year's team., I think.
I didn't see the game though.

#4 of 30 by hannibal on Sat Oct 26 03:32:56 1996:

Woo woo! I actually got to go :) To bad I was the last choice of my
bro <g> Anyways, it was all good..we had mid-ice seats near the top of
the Joe, but it's still easy to see stuff. After the first we moved
down behind the Maine goalie..4th row baby! :) 2nd came to an end, we
moved next to the band..that was pretty cool. A few of my bro's friends
were just randomly yelling out things..typical things like "Rip out his
lungs!" and someone in the band yelled out "HIT HIM IN THE DING DING!"
It was great! Michigan won, but I wasn't too impressed even though it
was a shutout. They're passing was horrible and they just seemed
unorganized throughout the first period and parts of the 2nd and 3rd.
At least Turco was awake!

Looks like U-M put a big hurt on Notre Dame, what, was it Friday? It was 5-0
after period 1, and I didn't happen to watch any more...

#6 of 30 by thetick on Sun Nov 3 22:47:57 1996:

Yeah, but Notre Dame came back I think. Too bad UM lost last night to
MSU :( 5-4..they lost in the closing minutes I think...

#7 of 30 by albaugh on Mon Nov 4 04:02:41 1996:

U-M beat ND on Friday 6-3, after jumping out to that big 5-0 lead.

#8 of 30 by srw on Tue Nov 5 08:44:09 1996:

MSU is a very good team. Too bad U-M lost to them, though. First
loss on the season. May it be the only one. THey're ranked 1 and
2 and I am looking forward to the rematch.

#9 of 30 by srw on Sat Dec 28 22:46:42 1996:

Great Lakes Invitational.: U-M beat MTU but it took until the second half of
the gam,e tostart getting pucks in to the net. MTU's goalie was exceptional.

Tonight they play LSSU for the GLI champioship.

Looking good. Go Blue!

#10 of 30 by albaugh on Mon Jan 6 20:43:10 1997:

U-M gave up the tying goal late to LSSU, then came right back to score the
winner with just a bout a minute left in the 3rd period to capture its 9th
straight GLI.

#11 of 30 by thetick on Sat Jan 11 16:40:00 1997:

UM won last night..they murdered UAF 13-1! I listened to it on the radio
and I must say that the crowd was so in to it! After every goal of course
they do the goal count chant, but also the "original" cowbell guy (I'm
sick of all these people who bring them and they suck!) would get the
"Go Blue!" chant going. I know that when UAF put in their backup goalie,
the "Superfan" got up on his seat and started yelling at him and the goalie
sorta did a "Come on, let's rock" type look at him. Then the students
were yelling "It's all your fault" and the idiot goalie looked at them..he
acknowledged them! Hehehe..they play someone tonight, not sure who..Ferris
State maybe?

#12 of 30 by srw on Tue Jan 14 20:48:11 1997:

I only heard about the game. It totally impossible to get tickets.

A few years ago, U-M didn't have any great chants. Then Cornell came to
town and the U-M fans learned a lot from them. I'm a big U-M fan, but my
wife is a Cornell grad., and trust me they live and breath hockey in
Ithaca. We owe a lot of our cool chants to ideas from that place.

Cornell is known for its more cerebral cheers. In football, when some in
the crowd start yelling "DEE-FENSE", there's always another group to
echo them with "Social Spending!". Keeps you on your toes.

(now back to U-M hockey mercy-killings)

#13 of 30 by albaugh on Sat Jan 18 04:12:38 1997:

Can someone run it down for me?
<U-M scores a goal at Yost>
<the goal is officially announced>
<the crowd counts from 1 to n>
<the crowd says "we want more!">
<the crowd taunts "sieve! sieve"! sieve!"...>
then the crowd says???

#14 of 30 by srw on Mon Jan 20 01:57:31 1997:

"It's all *your* fault. It's all *your* fault. It's all *your* fault."

#15 of 30 by albaugh on Mon Jan 20 19:27:36 1997:

As in the goalie's fault? Hmmm... I'll try to listen carefully the next time
I catch U-M on PASS at Yost. I saw 'em win a somewhat "loose" game 8-5
Saturday at Yost vs. Western MI (on PASS). Brendan Morrisson had the hat
trick in the first period... U-M has scored in 34 consecutive periods,
including all 3 Saturday...

#16 of 30 by srw on Wed Jan 22 08:47:04 1997:

Yes, the whole purpose of the cheer is to rattle the goalie. Some of these
young goalies can indeed be rattled. Now that the cheer has been used for a
few years, though, I am sure that they are all well informed as to what to
expect before stepping onto the ice.

I kinda like the one where they ring a phone and then the crowd cheers
"Hey, <opposing goalie's name>. it's your mom. And she just called to say...
YOU SUCK"

Then there's the one with the vacuum cleaner. That's a riot too, but I'm not
sure I can put it all together.

#17 of 30 by omni on Wed Jan 22 18:50:11 1997:

When I lived in Poer Huron, my friends and I would sit behind the opposing
goalie and taunt him, call him names, toss squid at him, etc. Actually,
you couldn't buy squid at decent prices since Port Huron was out the boonies.
The Port Huron Flags were an A hockey team of the Minnesota (back in 82 it
was in Minnesota) North Stars. The rivals were the evil Flint Generals and
The Saginaw Gears. Gotta love IHL hockey. The only thing I really hated was
that the management of McMorran Arena kept the tempurature roughly about the
same as Mid December in North Dakota. Cold is not the adjective for how it
was in the arena.

#18 of 30 by thetick on Fri Jan 24 06:13:32 1997:

The telephone chant..heh..at one of the games the opposing team's goalie
had some weird name so it didn't sound right so my bro's friend yelled
instead of "It's your mom" he said "Hey <goalie>, it's your boyfriend!
he says, you suck!"

The vacuum one is good if you can get a lot of people to do it right..
that's when it's fun and sounds right..
It's like: "Hey <goalie>, you're a sieve, no wait, you're not a sieve,
you're a funnel, no, you're not a funnel, you're a vacuum, no, you're
not a vacuum, you're a black hole, no, you're not a black hole, YOU
JUST SUCK, YOU JUST SUCK, YOU JUST SUCK!" Something like that..i might
have left one thing out..can't remember though :)

#19 of 30 by srw on Fri Jan 24 07:38:04 1997:

Yeah!

I think it is Vacuum *cleaner*, not vacuum. Anyway, Yeah, it's pretty
amazing when you get a thousand people in sync on such a complex cheer.

#20 of 30 by albaugh on Fri Jan 24 19:42:55 1997:

"Western Michigan is back at full strength."

"THEY STILL SUCK!"

It's time to check out the ESPN web page at
http://ESPNET.SportsZone.com/editors/ESPY/97index.html

There are four sports events up for an "ESPY" award as the most
outrageous play of the year. You can vote for your favorite one by
visiting this site. My favorite was Mike Legg's goal.

Yup, you guessed it, that "Lacrosse style" goal is in the running for an
ESPY. Vote early vote often. If you don't have web access where you live
or work, you have it on grex, just type
lynx http://ESPNET.SportsZone.com/editors/ESPY/97index.html

#22 of 30 by thetick on Tue Jan 28 02:12:34 1997:

hmm..that bottom part there got cut off, srw :) I have web access anyways,
but yeah, that was one helluva goal!

Hey, is anyone going to Wolverine Weekend at the Joe next month?

#23 of 30 by thetick on Sat Feb 8 12:59:46 1997:

Wolverine Weekend is here! Last night Michigan beat out LSSU 5-2, scoring
all 5 in the second. Good game played by both sides, Michigan seemed to
do better when shorthanded. And once the first goal was scored, they
struck like lightning..every few minutes after that another one was
scored. We moved a few times, ended up in the LSSU goalie side for
the 2nd so we could see all 5 goals and we stayed there for the 3rd
since people over there knew the chants and would chant along when
one of my brother's friends would start something (He got the Hobey Baker
chant going, the "Black Hole" one going, and a few others). Tonight
Michigan takes on MSU is what may possibly be a sold out game at
the Joe. Should be another good game since the MSU goalies are back.

#24 of 30 by thetick on Sun Feb 9 14:02:12 1997:

Dammit! UM lost to MSU 2-1. UM played like shit the entire game.
Passes were off, their power play sucked, and they got outshot by over 10
shots. You could see flaws in the defense. MSU out skated/shot, everything
them last night. This is Michigan's first loss in like 23 games, their
last loss being against MSU.

MSU scored first, then scored on the PP before UM finally scored
with around 5 minutes left in the game.

#25 of 30 by thetick on Sun Feb 9 14:34:54 1997:

Okay everyone, tell everyone you know to go to:
http://uscollegehockey.com
and vote for Brendon Morrison for the Hobey Baker Award!
Right now he's second in the voting..lets change that!

#26 of 30 by thetick on Sun Feb 16 13:52:45 1997:

>Last night I went to the UM vs. ND game..my first time being at the new
>Yost Ice Arena. UM came off a 3-1 victory the night before, but
>played horrible from what they said. UM came out strong tonight and
>played an all around great game. The highlight came in the 3rd period
>as Brendon Morrison got the assist on the only goal scored that period
>to become the alltime leader in points for UM. Congrats to Brendon and
>the Hobey Baker he'd better win! BTW, our seats kicked ass because
>three rows behind us was some guy who yelled something funny every 10
>seconds the entire game!
>
>Next Friday and Saturday, UM vs. LSSU!

#27 of 30 by srw on Wed Feb 19 19:58:55 1997:

I went to that game, too. It was great. I wish I could get tickets for
the Saturday LSSU game this weekend.

CONGRATS TO THE 1997 CCHA CHAMPIONS, THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!

#29 of 30 by srw on Mon Mar 17 02:26:31 1997:

I didn't get to see any of the championship game versus MSU, but I heard it
was a humdinger. The MSU goalie kept them in it until the end.

My second favorite college hockey team also made it into the NCAA
championships. Cornell (Go Big Red) beat Clarkson to win ECAC championship.
So I have two teams to root for in the NCAAs.

It's truly a good year for college hockey around my house this year.
Go Blue. Go Big Red.
