Grex Sports Item 50: The best Sportscaster
Entered by omni on Wed Aug 28 05:02:15 UTC 1996:

Who do you like for sports on the box? Don Shane IMNSHO is the best, but
I think that there could be some other opinions.

First a clarification: Do you mean TV sports director/anchor, or someone who
actually "casts" sporting events, e.g. Harry Caray?

#2 of 24 by omni on Fri Aug 30 04:08:05 1996:

I meant like in the dude who does the sports on the box. We have 3, Don
Shane, Van Earl Wright, and some broad over on the Fox station that I don't
watch. (that's Detroit) I realize that there are other cities that this
reaches, and you may have an other opinion.

#3 of 24 by albaugh on Fri Aug 30 16:40:42 1996:

I must admit that I can't recall the last time I watched news on Fox-2, so
it's news to me that they had a woman sports anchor/whatever. Although he
often used to annoy me, I enjoyed watching Al Ackerman, especially when he
gave a lotta lip to Bill Bonds! ;-)

To tell you the truth, I sorta miss Howard Cosell now that he's no longer with
us.

#5 of 24 by omni on Fri Aug 30 19:17:31 1996:

Oh Geez Al Ackerman. I hated that idiot. Especially in the latter yrs with
that Bless you Boys crap that he started. God, am I glad that he retired.

I liked Dave Diles, Ray Lane and Van Patrick, all three were class acts, and
sadly to say we will not see thier type on the box again. Don't get me going
on Bill Bonds, either.

Van Earl without a doubt for sporting news...:Goin DEEP over the fence in left
field"

Actual game broadcating...gotta be Dave and Mickey...

I hate listening to Van Earl. I will mute the TV when he talks.

#8 of 24 by albaugh on Sat Oct 19 05:32:42 1996:

BTW, looks like Dave Strader moved up to the "bigs" as a permanent hockey
play-by-play guy for Fox. (Both he and Mickey Redmond did guest appearances
on Fox last year.) The new guy that channel 50 has for play-by-play seems
to be pretty competent...

#9 of 24 by bubu on Sat Oct 19 06:13:06 1996:

yeah he isnt too bad, but I thought Dave went on to ESPN....???
Either way I am glad to see him move on something bigger , but on the ohter
hand it is sad to see him go...

#10 of 24 by srw on Sun Oct 20 04:40:57 1996:

Dave did go to ESPN. He replaces Tom Mees, who tragically drowned not
long ago. I miss Dave, though. The new guy is missing that "Je ne sais
quoi".

#11 of 24 by albaugh on Mon Oct 21 06:42:01 1996:

Don't mean to be ghoulish, but is the only reason Dave moved on to ESPN (sorry
about the Fox biz :-) due to Tom Mees' death?

#12 of 24 by srw on Thu Oct 24 04:46:28 1996:

Officially, no. But many people think that this is the only reason he was
given the opportunity at this time.

#13 of 24 by senna on Wed Nov 13 21:25:05 1996:

Bernie's baaaaaaack!!!!!!

#14 of 24 by mwarner on Thu Nov 14 20:43:15 1996:

What about Bernie? I saw in all the New York papers the story of his
firing. Even made the front page of the New York Times. A bunch of
people were fired "massacre" style at a NYC TV station including B.S. Of
course, I haven't seen any follow-up on the career of Detroit's late great
Bernie, except that he was"dead in NYC" career-wise.

#15 of 24 by srw on Fri Nov 15 06:55:26 1996:

Bernie got toasted in NY along with the whole newsroom. I feel sorry for him
about that. I don't think it reflects much on him. I am not a big Bernie fan,
but it is *such* a relief to be rid of Van Earl that I am pleased to see
Bernie.

#16 of 24 by bruin on Fri Nov 15 14:34:31 1996:

So right, srw, as Van Earl is noted for "speaking in tongues."

#17 of 24 by mwarner on Fri Nov 15 20:02:27 1996:

There's room for Bernie's form of entertainment. In NY though, it seems
some of the blame did fall on his shoulders. Supposedly, ratings took a
nose dive whenever his segment rolled around.

#18 of 24 by omni on Sat Nov 16 04:35:26 1996:

Bernie's like that. He makes me sick whenever I watch him, and makes Don
Shane looks like Edward R. Murrow, not that Don is all that pleaseant.

#19 of 24 by srw on Sun Nov 17 06:55:11 1996:

I didn't know Bernie had absorbed any blame in NY newsroom
demolition. I'd believe it, though. I agree with omni, and usually
prefer to watch Don Shane. He's a ham, but for now he's the best
we've got.

I like the ESPN college football gameday crew, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreet,
Beano Cook, and 2 other guys that I don't remember (possibly Mike Adamle?)
As far as just sports anchors, I hate em all. I like the Redwings play by
play guys, and like any sane human being, I HATE DICKY V!!

#21 of 24 by omni on Mon Nov 17 05:57:19 1997:

Who doesn't? He's been that way for a long, long time and he'll never change.
I thought he was a very good coach, and I think he should have stayed at
coaching.

#22 of 24 by richard on Tue Nov 18 17:39:15 1997:

I like Keith Olbermann, even if he did leave Sportscenter for NBC...

#23 of 24 by srw on Sat Nov 22 05:41:26 1997:

The ESPN college gameday will be broadcast live from the north end of
Michigan Stadium this afternoon (sat.) after the game.

I enjoy listening to Gary Thorne...while he may not be the best when it comes
to the play-by-play...he's got a great voice...I dont' know how to discribe
it but it's great to listen to.
