Grex Sports Item 49: The We Can Coach better than Scotty item, or Wings 96-97.
Entered by omni on Wed Aug 28 05:00:40 UTC 1996:

This is the 1996-97 Red Wings (We can coach better than Scotty) item.

Issue 1. They traded Dino for a 3rd round conditional pick. Of course, I
think that this is blasphemy beyond belief, what do you all think about it.

  Let us discuss Hockey.

When someone participating in this conference/item leads the NHL in career wins
or leads the NHL in wins for even just one season, only then will I agree
that said person can coach better than Scotty Bowman. I'm not happy that
he/they traded away Dino, or that the team has come up short in the playoffs
the past few seasons. But every year there's only one coach that fans can
be truly satisfied with, and Scotty has been that man more than any other
human. So your griping won't get you far...

Meanwhile, I wonder how Konstantinov's healing is coming...

Speaking of the Russians..anyone know how they are faring in the World
Cup tourn?

#3 of 136 by omni on Fri Aug 30 04:05:22 1996:

I was being funny, Kevin. I think we (collectively) could have produced a
winner, but then again, what do I know?

#4 of 136 by albaugh on Fri Aug 30 16:36:45 1996:

Hey, we all love to 2nd guess the coach, sometimes even when his team wins!
;-)

#5 of 136 by albaugh on Fri Aug 30 16:43:09 1996:

Who ended up winning last night between Russia and Canada? With all the
familiar names it sounded like a Wings scrimmage. ;-)

i heard abnout this club the wings hang out in.....i wrote it down
somewhere....we should have a grex lets go try and meet the wings expidition

#7 of 136 by bubu on Thu Sep 5 17:28:27 1996:

First of all....If the Wings had not gotten rid of Dino now they would have
lost him as the deadline approches....The Wings can only protect a certain
number of players and Dino wasn't gonna be one of them...At least this way
we got somthing in return....not much , but better than nothing...I think the
Wings are also trying to make som salary room for a move on Brendan
Shanahan...Another Fourty goal scorer wouldn't hurt...

Secondly....On any given Saturday that the Wings are at home..Youu can go to
the Joe and hang out on the River side of the arena about 8 am and get auto's
as the players enter practice...They are usually pretty good about it....
I have been a few times and it is really a treat..

#8 of 136 by hematite on Mon Sep 9 20:17:47 1996:

(Wasn't sure where else in this Cf to put this..soo..) Mario Lemieux
announced his decision about playing this year..He will be back
for the 96-97 season. He said (something along the lines of..) One
of the main reasons he came back was to win the CUp one more time.
And now back to your regularly scheduled Red Wing's talk.

#9 of 136 by omni on Tue Sep 10 04:59:53 1996:

This was the appropriate place for that.

#10 of 136 by omni on Wed Oct 9 18:10:12 1996:

Notice is hereby served that the words Stanley and Cup are not to appear
in any Red Wings item in this conference. Failure to adhere to this request
in the severest of punishment, namely being dropped into a container of dead
squid.
The Red Wings have requested that no one speak those words until the
appropriate time.

Thanks
The management.

#11 of 136 by hematite on Wed Oct 9 23:45:53 1996:

Well, it's looking to be offical. Say so long, Arriverderci, Ciao
Bub-Eye to Primeau and Coffey (along with a '97 draft pick! ;).
I heard the deal went through... Bummer.
(New season, time for the new post. =)

#12 of 136 by albaugh on Tue Oct 22 16:23:43 1996:

Brendan Shanahan got his first goal for the Wings last night. He like it so
much he got another! :-) Chris Osgood got his 2nd shutout of the season and
10th of his young NHL career with some help from his friends, 3-0 over the
punchless LA Kings.

#13 of 136 by srw on Thu Oct 24 04:45:06 1996:

I was at the Grex Board meeting, and I don't get PASS, but I found out that
the Wings beat a much better team, the Stars, Wednesday. Finally, finally,
finally, they got their power play working. ALso SHanahan got 2 goals. That's
more like it.

Maybe we'll see the speed and puck movement that has been missing so far. Ok,
now I'm ready to watch a game. Go Wings!

#14 of 136 by albaugh on Sun Nov 3 11:15:25 1996:

The Wings offense looks terrible. Their defense hasn't been so wonderful
either. Friday night they blew a 2-0 lead in the 3rd period, couldn't score
any more, ended up tying Ottawa 2-2. Last night looked pathetic in a
miserable 6-2 loss to the Leafs. Oh, well, I don't care any more; all I want
to see is better performance in the playoffs. They have the whole regular
season to get prepared...

#15 of 136 by srw on Tue Nov 5 08:38:50 1996:

Too true. They were totally pathetic in Maple Leaf Gardens. How
did they play against Hartford last night? I missed the score.

#16 of 136 by hematite on Tue Nov 5 20:51:37 1996:

5-1 I think. (woo hoo!) And get it right, it's the Columbus Whalers.
(maybe...in the year 200...if we get our thumbs out of our rears
and build a stadium..=)
erp, make that 2000

#17 of 136 by albaugh on Fri Nov 8 18:16:52 1996:

Actually, it's the *Detroit* Whalers playing at the new rink here in
*Plymouth*! :-)

#18 of 136 by hematite on Sat Nov 9 02:23:05 1996:

I'm confuzzled. (And it's not too hard to do that!)
I'm serious though. Columbus may actually get the Whalers...
(is walking off scratching her head...)

#19 of 136 by albaugh on Mon Nov 11 00:09:44 1996:

Sorry about the confusion: The "Detroit" Whalers playing their home games
in Plymouth, Michigan is a *minor* league team, not "the" NHL Whalers who play
in Hartford, Conneticut, and maybe one day - you imply - in Columbus, Ohio.

#20 of 136 by hematite on Mon Nov 11 02:43:30 1996:

Ohh! I get it, now!

#21 of 136 by albaugh on Mon Nov 11 07:22:03 1996:

Tuned in tonight's Wings game just long enough to see some pretty passing by
the Wings to score a power play goal to go up 3-0 on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Detroit won the game 4-2. Dino got lots of cheers by the Wings fans, didn't
figure into the scoring.

#22 of 136 by hematite on Mon Nov 11 21:15:06 1996:

The Wings play Colorado Wednesday. Some how I don't think it will
be as interesting with Claude out...
(And I was looking forward to this game too!)

#23 of 136 by srw on Fri Nov 15 06:53:25 1996:

Colorado won easily.

#24 of 136 by hematite on Fri Nov 15 21:32:25 1996:

Yup. But it seemed Draper still wasn't too happy with them...

#25 of 136 by hematite on Sun Jan 12 03:24:02 1997:

<ahem> Could we by any chance put Poulin of the Isle's in the
squid tank for trying to fence during a hockey game? (And against
Lemieux too. Humph!)

#26 of 136 by omni on Sun Jan 12 05:08:52 1997:

The squid tank is reserved for members of the Red Wings, players, owners
and management, such that it is, and in extreme cases, members of this
conference ;)

#27 of 136 by hematite on Mon Jan 13 19:45:23 1997:

Oh fine. Be that way. Speaking of it, did anyone see that game. Woo. He ought
to get more than a game suspensin..

#28 of 136 by albaugh on Tue Jan 21 17:19:17 1997:

I tell ya, after seeing just the 3rd period last night of Wings at Montreal,
in which they gave up 4 3rd period goals to lose 4-1, they have the definite
look of a team that has gone into the tank. I've seen this look before, in
the bad years not so long ago... I can understand the offensive ineptitude
(even if I don't like it), with both Shanahan & Federov out for the 3rd
period. But the defensive lapses have become glaring & horrendous: They gave
up 2! breakaways in the first minute of the 3rd period to go from being up
1-0 to down 2-1. In both cases, Vernon stoned the shooter, only to have the
rebound put in by the trailer. That's disgraceful! I assume this won't go
on much longer before Scottie lowers the boom in some fashion...

#29 of 136 by srw on Wed Jan 22 08:42:37 1997:

If there's one thing that Scotty hates, it's those defensive lapses.
Actually, I hate them too.

#30 of 136 by hematite on Wed Jan 22 23:51:12 1997:

Omni, you are now entitled to explaion what men of the S.Q.U.Id are. =)

#31 of 136 by omni on Thu Jan 23 04:33:06 1997:

The Red Wings, of course. Were you looking for a cute acronym?
 ;)

#32 of 136 by hematite on Fri Jan 24 02:59:01 1997:

Yes I was. I like acromyns, almost as much as I like oxy-morons!
(es, classy hockey players =) Just imagin, "Oh I'm sorry did I bumb
your fibula? Please, let me take of the doctors bill!" Uh no.)

#33 of 136 by albaugh on Fri Jan 24 19:39:32 1997:

Another blown 3rd-perioed lead Wed. led to 2-2 tie with Philly...

#34 of 136 by srw on Fri Jan 24 19:48:12 1997:

I think the wings haven't won more than 1 game in the last 10.

:-(

#35 of 136 by albaugh on Wed Jan 29 01:18:28 1997:

Now let's hope that the WIngs can keep repeating their effort Saturday at
Philly! :-)

#36 of 136 by srw on Thu Jan 30 18:22:14 1997:

They lost another one at home, and on TV to the Coyotes.
(They used to be Nordiques). It was a very disappointing thing to watch.
All the excitement has gone out of the wings.

I am holding out some hope that when federov returns, the team will
resolve its current problems. The last game thatthey won at home was the
last one federov played in - you remember, when he scored 5 goals.

#37 of 136 by albaugh on Thu Jan 30 19:46:37 1997:

THe former Quebec Nordiques became the present Colorado Avalanche.
The former Winnipeg Jets became the present Phoenix Coyotes. :-)

The Wings just completed their first winless-at-home month since 1982...

#38 of 136 by srw on Sun Feb 2 07:35:26 1997:

Oops. Thanks for straightening me out on the transplantations.
I actually knew that Quebec became Colorado. I don't know why I named them
instead of Winnipeg as the origin of the Coyotes.

Hey, the Wings beat the Blues. Cool Beans! Where's my octopus?
(Oh yeah, we're not doing that any more, bummer.)

#39 of 136 by omni on Mon Feb 3 05:54:41 1997:

No squid until the playoffs. ;)
