I haven't watched the gymnastics.

I'm lookiing forward to the team sports. I do love those the best.
Volleyball is my #1 sport in the summer olympics./
I'll be following both the mens and women's teams.

Also soccer is fun. I wonder if we'd have been good enough to qualify had we
not been the host country.

Re 3 - I don't know about our Olympic team, but the US national
soccer team was ranked 14th in the world in the last FIFA
rating.

#6 of 63 by srw on Sat Jul 6 21:45:21 1996:

I don;t know that there's quite any way to know whether the USA
soccer team would have qualified had it been necessary. However,,
it will be possible to see where they wind up in the styandings after the
Olympics are over.

#7 of 63 by hematite on Sat Jul 6 22:41:37 1996:

Who is on the Olympic soccor team anyway?

I was very impressed with the Track and Feild part of the olympics espically
when a person in the 200dash beat the world record just trying to qualify for
the olympics with 19.66s!!

Welcome to Grex, uma. It gets easier. We are talking about the Olympics here.

Wendy, did youy see the Lalas page on the web? There are some pictures there
that I really like (especially the one where he is consoling Meola).

#14 of 63 by omni on Tue Jul 9 07:06:19 1996:

boring. The Olympics are the worlds biggest sham. Wake me when they are
over.

Sounds like you need some caffeine. How 'bout a Coke, the official Cola
of the 1996 Olympic Games!

Re: #11. Wendy, I'll be at that game, too! I'm actually working it, handing
out the free programs! :) (But then again, you can only say "Would you
like a free program" so many times... :) ). If you see me there, come on
over and say hi :) (I have no clue what you look like, but my picture is

20 LB (lower box) row 7, seats 1 & 2. I'll look for you before the game =)
On a sad note, Alexei won't be playing tomarrow...(He got suspended..)

i like to watch talented athletes....im mostly a hockey/basketball fan, but
i really like gymnastics and diving and ice skating and stuff that just puts
me in awe of amazing athletic ability

#21 of 63 by bubu on Tue Jul 16 15:46:19 1996:

A guy I grew up with will be competing on the 26th in the 10,000 meter...
His name is Todd Williams, He now lives in Tenn. but is origanally from
Monroe.

#22 of 63 by ajax on Tue Jul 16 18:08:57 1996:

I heard the IOC (or USOC?) was sueing (or pre-suit negotiating) the US
Postal Service for issuing Olympic stamps without paying to become the
Official Mail Service of the Summer Olympics or anything. The level of
commercialism and profit-making is reaching new heights this year.
The execs taking home half million dollar paychecks for their "non-profit"
employment are earning every dime!

#23 of 63 by omni on Tue Jul 16 18:34:32 1996:

sigh. Time was when the Olympics stood for the best in amatuer competition,
and no one worried about the commercial implications. Them days are long gone.

#24 of 63 by ajax on Wed Jul 17 04:13:47 1996:

I had a revenue-enhancing idea for the Olympics: for athletes
with an income of over $10 million per year (e.g. probably most of
the basketball team), charge them a few million for the privilege of
becoming an Official Basketball Player of the 1996 Summer Olympics.
I mean come on, they're going to profit from the affiliation the same
way Coca-Cola does...they're not wearing Nike and Reebok shoes in
Olympic-related ads for free! :-)

#25 of 63 by omni on Wed Jul 17 22:08:52 1996:

I don't think that would fly, Rob.

#26 of 63 by lucey on Fri Jul 19 01:05:02 1996:

Re 21: Whoa! You grew up with THE Todd Williams? Cool. I've been following
himand other American distance runners (Bob Kennedy, etc.) for the past three
years, ever since I starte drunning XC and track at school. It'd be
interesting to see how he does against the Kenyans.
Actually, I'm gearing up to watch Algeria's Morceli. I think they've got
him in the 1500m, and there's a good chance he'll set another world record.

#27 of 63 by srw on Sat Jul 20 12:53:34 1996:

Time for the Olympics to actually start, now that the opening ceremonies are
over. I never cared much for the ceremonies.

#28 of 63 by doll on Sat Jul 20 14:38:47 1996:

they had alot of trouble gettin the atletes into the stadium last night

#29 of 63 by lucey on Sun Jul 21 05:52:12 1996:

Yeah, the athlete's entrance was a lot more disorganized than in previous
years, but watching Ali come to light the torch made it all worthwhile.

#30 of 63 by omni on Sun Jul 21 15:43:21 1996:

I got a look at the torch and it's really UGLY. Who designed that
monstrosity.

#31 of 63 by srw on Sun Jul 21 17:04:49 1996:

Heh. The torch is especially weird looking.
Soccer: USA men lost to Argentina 3-1 (but they scored the first goal)
VBall: Canada women lost to Cuba (not surprising) 15-8 15-8 15-5
        USA women won easily
BBAll: Dream team beat Argentina, but played lousy defense and
I think generally disappointed a lot of viewers.
        Canadian women lost to Brazil.

There was a world record set by a Chinese woman swimmer.
I saw that NZ won a gold medal. My friend in NZ wil appreciate that.

#32 of 63 by ajax on Sun Jul 21 18:36:24 1996:

Since 1991, the Chinese government has been alleged to have funded a
substantial research effort in the use of banned hormonal supplements
(steroids, and human growth hormones). They've set a lot of world
records since then, but when unscheduled drug tests were performed,
11 Chinese stars were caught, including their female swimming medalist.
They were expected to have continued this program for the current
Olympics, but with more attention toward indetectability through
the use of natural hormones, which might just happen to be unusually
high in a given person. It's a shame if the swimmer mentioned in 31
did it without drugs, because I doubt many people aware of recent
happenings will believe it.

#33 of 63 by srw on Sun Jul 21 18:52:16 1996:

That is true, but there have been some interviews with athletes about this
question, and most of them have a lot of confidence in the testing being done
now, although they admit that the games are not 100% clean.

#34 of 63 by ajax on Mon Jul 22 03:47:47 1996:

Unfortunately, that probably reflects the ignorance of the athletes, more
than the accuracy of the testing. Tests are unable to distinguish between
synthetic and natural testosterone, and people's natural testosterone levels
vary. Tests started looking for abnormal ratios of testosterone to
epitestosterone, but athletes responded by taking the two together.
And human growth hormone can't even be tested for (it's got a less proven
track record, but athletes still take it). A new hormone known as "epo"
gives a short-term effect by increasing the body's red blood cell
production, and while it can be tested for, it's too costly, so it's
another that goes unscreened in the Olympics. It does have one side-
effect: death. 18 Dutch and Belgian cyclists are thought to have died
from its use, yet its popularity is on the rise.

So overall, while I have faith that the testing program tests what it
sets out to test, it does not set out to test for many hormonal supplements.

#35 of 63 by srw on Tue Jul 23 08:38:51 1996:

That may all be true. I am certainly not an expert in that area.
Still the poor performance by the Chinese swimmers is being rather universally
blamed on the improved testing. Athletes do admit that there are still abuses.

On to the results. Monda's results included a GOLD in the 400 Individual
Medley (swimming) to Tom Dolan, with a silver going to Eric Namesnik. There
is an impressive showwing being made by the US in the swimming pool, and a
very large component of it is U-M Ann Arbor-based athletes.

Amanda Beard got a SILVER. She's only 14.
The Men's relay team won a GOLD Monday as well.

Continuing in the pool with Tuesday's action, the American Women's relay team
won Gold in the 4x100 greestyle. I think they set an American and an olympic
record in the process, too.

Also Beth Botsford and Whitney Hedgepeth got GOLD and SILVER respectively in
the women'd 100 backstroke.
Tom Malchow (another U-M) got a SILVER in the 200 Butterfly, and Gary Hall
Jr. a SILVER (by a razor thin margin) in the 100 freestyle.

In VBall on Tuesday, the USA Women beat the Netherlands in 4 games, losing
the firs, and nearly losing the 3rd after letting the Dutch back into the
game. They clearly did not play their best, but they still won.

In Mens BBall, the dream team beat Angola easily.

The Water polo team hung on to win 9-7, but I forgot the opponent. It was a
European team. they had to win as they have the opening round loss to the
Italians.

I didn't hear any soccer results. Looking forward to men's VB tomorrow, and
the women come back on Weds to play China. Should be good.

#36 of 63 by canis on Tue Jul 23 14:15:53 1996:

The dream team, did beat Angola, but they didn't look like they were
playing well. Sure they won by 30 some points, but come on this is The
Dream Team. At one point in the game they were only ahead by 1 point. If
the Dream Team keeps this up they may be rudly awakened. I don't want to
sound unpatriotic but personally I hope the Dream Team losses. So much
attention has been given to them, already, and they aren't even playing
well. Basketball will be on in the Fall and Winter, so who cares about
the Dream Team. There isn't anyone else like them in Olympic basketball.
Personally I'd rather watch wrestling, fencing, soccer, or any one of a
number of other sports, that won't be on in the Fall.

I belive the water polo team the U.S. played was the Russian team... I
could be wrong. So far the U.S. has won 2 and lost 1 game in water polo.

I think that Beth Botsford, is also very young, somthing like 16.

It should aslo be noted that Pocket Hurcles, picked up a 3rd gold medal this
year. Lifting a record for his weight class. It was 3 times (or more) then
his own body weight.

#37 of 63 by ajax on Tue Jul 23 16:17:22 1996:

Are the Ann Arbor swimmers mostly UMich students, or did Olympic swimmers
come to AA temporarily for training and coaching? I noticed one swimmer
had UMich's block "M" tatooed on his pelvis...bet the U didn't even have
to pay for that excellent advertising spot!! :-)

#38 of 63 by srw on Fri Jul 26 06:11:58 1996:

I haven't had time to come back here and post all of the interesting results.
This is just what I can remember. I hope there are no errors.

Of course everyone is talking about Kerry Strug's final vault, and the
American Women's Gymnastics team's Gold medal.

Her sprain will keep her out of any further competition in the Olympics, is
my guess.

Three of them, with Dominique Moceanu substituting for Kerry came back for
the all-round indivdual competition, but none of them medaled.

The Women's VB team lost yesterday, but should still be able to get into the
medal round. The men's team lost an amazing match tonight, by 2 points in the
5th game, but they showed very little of it. I think they are OK to go on, too.

The Men Soccer team could only manage a tie against Portugal, and is thus
eliminated with a 1-1-1 record in a tough pool. The women's team is doing much
better.

Very nice Olympic Record Gold Medal tonight for the US Women's Swim relay
team, which did the 4x200 freestyle relay in under 8:00 (barely).

Track and field will be starting soon.

#39 of 63 by robh on Fri Jul 26 06:33:28 1996:

The US softball team just defeated Canada 4-2 with a two-run
rally in the top of the 7th inning. Sadly, I had to watch the
Canadian coverage to see it live, since the US was showing the
tape of the men's volleyball match.
