Grex Sports Item 39: The NCAA Hockey item
Entered by srw on Sun Jan 7 19:08:50 UTC 1996:

This is the item to talk about NCAA Hockey.

Clearly with all the Michigan and Ohio users here, we will focus on the CCHA,
but ECAC and WCHA comments are certainly welcome.

37 responses total.

I went down to Yost Ice Arena last night to watch the contest between U-M and
Miami. Note that in this sport there is only one Miami, so there is no need
to qualify it.

I expected that U-M would be able to win. They had beaten Miami earlier, but
it was a tough struggle. I was not fully prepared for the result, though.

Every time any one went in the penalty box, U-M scored. It didn't matter
whether it was a power play or shorthanded. It was amazing. I hadn't been to
a game all season. I usually don't go during football season, and now tickets
are awfully hard to come by. It was great to watch Botterill get a hat trick
in his first game back after playing with the Canadian Junior team.
It was also great to see Morrison, and of course a shutout by Turco, with
a little help from a walk-on backup goalie at the end.

Final score 13-0.

WOW they really pounded them.....I must admit that i do not follow College
hockey very much. I do however follow the NHL. Maybe this item will give
me a reason to start following College hockey a little closer...

#3 of 37 by srw on Sat Jan 13 06:41:02 1996:

They beat Chicago Circle tonight, but I don't have the details yet.

#4 of 37 by hannibal on Sat Jan 27 18:36:27 1996:

Yeah, I was at the Miami game too. It's always fun to watch UM blow out
another team at home though :) Was that the game in which 2 people won on
the score-o thing? or was that Ferris State? hm...I went to both of those
games on that weekend. UM is always impressive, except this year when they've
been beaten bad by WSU. I'll be at the OSU game this Friday. I'll tell
details then.

#5 of 37 by srw on Sun Jan 28 08:18:16 1996:

I heard that they struggled to a tie in the OSU game. Very disappointing.

#6 of 37 by hannibal on Tue Mar 5 02:14:52 1996:

Yeah...they did...(Sorry about the long delay in the details). The game was
awesome though. Lots of big hits. Askey (OSU Goalie) was awesome, I must
admit. Everything that went to his glove he stopped. No one could believe
it. OSU took the lead 1-0 in the third. Askey started to skate around with
his arms up in the air...everyone got all over his case because about a minute
or so earlier he tripped a UM player in the goal or something like that and
everyolne was like "WAVE YOUR HANDS NOW ASKEY!" (er..everyone). Askey ended
up with 50 saves. About 30 seconds later, UM scored...the crowd was super
hyped up now...I've never heard so much noise in there in my life. UM went
up 2-1, but then OSU scored and it ende dup a tie 2-2 in OT...(er..up). It
was a classic though.

#7 of 37 by hannibal on Tue Mar 5 02:17:22 1996:

Oh..I also went to the UM vs. OSU game the day before that I believe when UM
won 3-0. Good game...UM doesn't seem to have the same offense as they do
against other teams when they play OSU for some reason though. I even got
a free, cheap, warm up puck with no UM symbol on the side when it flew up into
the seats next to me at the end of warm ups when no one was there...now it
acts as my coaster for my coke :)

#8 of 37 by srw on Wed Mar 6 06:35:19 1996:

THat's great, Jason. I'm afraid that if I get a puck it will be at 100 mph.

I've got tickets to the second playoff this weekend (Sat night).
UM vs I think it's Ferris. At Yost.

#9 of 37 by hannibal on Sun Mar 10 14:32:06 1996:

Haha...nope...they played Miami...last home game of the year...kinda
depressing. I love going to the games! Well...at least they don't lose too
many of their players, which means they will have another championship team
returning :)

#10 of 37 by srw on Fri Mar 15 07:41:15 1996:

You're right. I went, but having earlier been to the 13-0 game, I wasn't
expecting Miami to play nearly as well as they did. They were still no match.

So as we approach the CCHA semifinals, the teams are
LSSU, U-M, MSU, B-G

Michigan will play MSU, I believe (though I've been wrong), and it's fair to
say that MSU has not been playing as well as B-G recently.

#11 of 37 by hannibal on Sat Mar 16 03:05:19 1996:

Fair? Heh..right now it's murder! UM is currently up 5-1 in the second
period...not even mid way through...Turco just made another great save! :)
Looks like it's all UM right now...I don't know who won the LSSU/BG game, but
it looks like whoever it was, they'll be playing UM. Oh..wait..it's now 5-2
UM.

#12 of 37 by srw on Mon Mar 18 08:34:50 1996:

Nevertheless both MSU and BGSU are invited to the NCAA regionals, making
(with U-m, and Lake State) a total of 4 from the CCHA. Very good showing
from the CCHA. 12 teams will play altogether, 6 in the East (at Albany)
and 6 in the west ( at Munn, in E. Lansing). U-M gets a bye on Saturday,
and will play Sunday.

The following week the 4 teams that are left will go to Cincinnati.

#13 of 37 by hannibal on Wed Mar 20 13:39:15 1996:

Actually...It's UM, MSU, Western Michigan, BGSU, and LSSU...5 teams. Very
impressive indeed. Of course, I'm pulling for Michigan and hope that they
finally win one of these things and don't lose in triple overtime again like
they did against Maine last year after being up 3-1. If they make it to the
final four, they'll most likely face Boston U., which would make a pretty good
matchup. Go Blue!

#14 of 37 by srw on Wed Mar 20 19:13:02 1996:

That's what happens when I try too this stuff from memory.
You are right that WMU is in the NCAA regional playoffs.
You and I were both wrong about BGSU. They didn't make it.
There are only 4 CCHA teams.

The full schedule can be found on the College Hockey Homepage

#15 of 37 by hannibal on Thu Mar 21 03:03:13 1996:

Oh..I'm a little surprised that BGSU didn't make the tournament after the way
they played this year. I mean, they did have a really good year, then beating
Western Michigan in the playoffs before losing to LSSU. I never thought that
they'd beat WSU. I always thought that WSU was underrated this year,
especially after the way they crushed UM twice in a row, like 8-1 and um..I
don't remember the other score. Oh well...anyways, like I said before, GO
BLUE!

#16 of 37 by srw on Thu Mar 21 05:28:12 1996:

Exactly Jason. Me too. That's why I put them in the regionals in WMU's place
(erroneously) when I first posted. I remembered incorrectly, but this error
was partly caused by what I expected.

#17 of 37 by hannibal on Sun Mar 24 02:21:56 1996:

Well..looks like WMU's history...I don't remember who the other game was
between though.

#18 of 37 by srw on Sun Mar 24 06:54:31 1996:

Here's the Eastern Division results. They have finished play in Albany:
LSSU 5, Cornell 4
Clarkson 6, WMU 1
Vermont 2, LSSU 1
BU 3, Clrk 2

And in East Lansing,

UMN 5, Providence 1
Mass-Lowell 6, MSU 2

Yipes.

I just found out that the UM-UMN game will be shown on cable
in AA and Ypsi only. Continental cable has picked up the rights and placed
it on cable 19. I am posting here in the hope that someone who cares will
see it in time to do some good.

Sorry if you are not in the coverage area, AA and Ypsi Cable only.

THANK YOU CONTINENTAL!

#20 of 37 by srw on Sun Mar 24 21:31:20 1996:

GREAT GAME!!!!

UM 4-3 winners. No time now to talk about it, maybe later.

#21 of 37 by srw on Sun Mar 24 22:43:30 1996:

Well the first period saw UM dominated in most aspects of the game. I think
they got a total of 3 shots, and were very lucky to be down only 2-1.
The second period was much more of a Michigan period. The shots were
roughly even, but U-M definitely took advantage and tied the game on an
amazing shot that will undoubtedly be the first choice for the news clips on
TV tonight. Mike Legg was left alone behind the Minnesota goal with the puck.
He had no one to pass it to -- everyone was covered. He scooped the puck up
on his stick, and reached around to drop it into the top right corner of the
net, over Goalie DeBus's left shoulder. It wouldn't really be honest to call
it a shot. It was the rough equivalent of a slam-dunk in Basketball.

I have seen players do this before in practice -- never in a game. It is not
an easy skill to be able to hold a puck in the air on the blade of your stick.
If any of the gophers had expected it, it would have been easy to defense --
it would have fallen off of his stick if anyone had even breathed on it.

Then in the third period they scored a great goal to go ahead 3-2, but got
defensive too early, and gave up the tie with something around 5 minutes left
in the game. Everybody started thinking it would go into overtime, as the game
had been a defensive struggle so far, with lots of great checking.

But no, Bill Muckalt scored the game winner for Michigan with 2 minutes left,
off a great pass-out from the boards by Brendan Morisson.

--

I am not sure of the matchups for next week, but I believe that of CC beats
UML in the second game, Michigan will play Vermont, but if UML upsets CC then
Michigan will get Clarkson instead. Those games will be in Cincinnati.

The college hockey homepage will have these details after the CC-UML game.

#22 of 37 by hannibal on Tue Mar 26 23:34:44 1996:

I thought that it was now UM vs. Boston U. in the final four and CC vs.
Vermont or someone like that?

#23 of 37 by hannibal on Wed Mar 27 23:49:15 1996:

Oops..and CC vs. Vermont or someone like that?

#24 of 37 by srw on Thu Mar 28 07:55:27 1996:

Yup I goofed. Clarkson was eliminated. It's BU.

CC-Vermont is on ESPN2 at 2 PM tomorrow.

UM-BU is on ESPN2 at 8PM

all times EST

Michigan could have a tiger by the tail in BU. I hope they're ready.
If they're ready, they should be able to beat them.

#25 of 37 by srw on Sat Mar 30 06:44:19 1996:

Boy were they ready. Nice job, winning 4-0.
Very impressive the way the maintained their defense for the whole 60
minutes. One game to go. They came all this way, now they have to win the last
one for the crown. It'll be against Colorado College, who beat Vermont with
a tainted overtime goal Thursday afternoon on an unbelievably bad ice surface.

They are perfectly capable of giving U-M a rough ride. The game is at 1PM
and is covered on ESPN, I believe, for those of you with cable.
Less than 12 hours away. Go Blue!

#26 of 37 by albaugh on Sat Mar 30 06:53:50 1996:

The semifinal games were covered on ESPN*2* - will the championship game be
on the deuce also, or on the primary? (I get both these days :-)
What was tainted about the winning CC OT goal? Was it somehow related to
the poor ice condition?

#27 of 37 by srw on Sat Mar 30 21:58:56 1996:

The puck was scored off of a handpass, at least it sure looked that way on
the replays.

Congrats to the U-M Wolverines! NCAA Hockey champions again after a drought
going back to 1964. The victory was a 3-2 margin, with the winning goal
coming in the first overtime period. Morrison from Muckalt and ??
(Botterill, methinks).

A very tough game for CC to lose. They played extremely well.

Great end to a great season for the Wolverines.

#28 of 37 by hannibal on Sat Mar 30 23:57:59 1996:

We did it! We did it! Yeehaw! <grin> That was one hell of a game..too bad
I couldn't watch it on TV though :( Had to settle with the good ole radio,
but it was still very exciting to listen to. Though CC played well, they
didn't play well enough today. Congrats to UM on a superb season. Lets do
it again next year fellas!

#29 of 37 by albaugh on Sun Mar 31 23:50:26 1996:

This is one of those weird, irrational superstitions things my mind does to
me in tight games: I noticed after the 2nd period that all the goals had
been scored in the rightward goal, as the TV camera presented the game to us:
Michigan one in the first, Colorado 2 in the 2nd. This was a hopeful sign
for the Wolverines in the 3rd, and they in fact scored the tying goal in
the rightward net! :-) However, this also appeared to be a bad omen as
overtime loomed (a full 20-minute overtime, just like a normal period in
regulation, not a mini 5-minute overtime the NHL has for its *regular*
season games), assuming that the teams would change ends. But darn if the
teams didn't stay with the same ends (goals) as the 3rd period. And darn if
U-M didn't score the game-winner into the rightward net, making all 5 goals
for the game scored there. Spooky, ain't it? :-)

#30 of 37 by srw on Mon Apr 1 00:30:44 1996:

i understand from the newspaper that the police had to close South U.
yesterday betweem East U and Forest, as about 1000 people gathered and marched
to the diag. Everyone was well behaved.

Go Blue!

I agree. Let's do it again next year.

(I am not spooked by such observations, but I am puzzled as I would have
expected them to change ends when they started the overtime. )

#31 of 37 by hannibal on Mon Apr 1 23:23:36 1996:

Did any of you guys here goto the Pep Rally today at Cliff Keen Arena? How
about Yost when the team returned? I was sad not to be able to attend, but
oh well, there's always next year :)

#32 of 37 by srw on Wed Apr 3 03:27:48 1996:

I don't think they did anything at Yost, 'cause it's all torn apart.
I didn't go to Cliff keen, though. I leave that kind of stuff to the younger
fans.

#33 of 37 by hannibal on Fri Apr 5 21:48:20 1996:

Well...everyone greeted the team's return at Yost that night they won.

Hmm..I have a question. Do you have any idea on how much it costs to get
things lamenated at Kinko's? I want to get that poster of the UM hockey
team after they won lamenated. It was in the Ann Arbor News, like one
entire page, so how much would that be or don't you know?

#34 of 37 by srw on Sat Apr 6 01:24:59 1996:

Nope, I'd give kinko's a call and ask. Can't hurt.

#35 of 37 by hannibal on Sun Apr 7 03:52:42 1996:

Yeah..probably will or else just stop by next time I'm downtown since I'm
on break for the next week right now. This is something that I'm gonna save
for life...probably be buried with it :)

#36 of 37 by hannibal on Wed May 15 02:35:43 1996:

Well...it being my birthday today, my dad let me leave school early to go
see none other than U-M's very own Red Berenson speak at his Kiwanis Club
meeting. He talked the entire time about U-M hockey, the team, the players,
the fans, the renovation to Yost Ice Arena. Overall it was really a good
speech and I didn't fall asleep or get close :)
