Grex Sports Item 1: Welcome to the sports Cf, 2nd edition
Entered by omni on Thu Jun 30 20:23:20 UTC 1994:

Welcome to the 2nd edition of the Sports Conf. I hope that this conference
will be one that can discuss all aspects of the sports world, from the
athletes themselves, to the games that they play.
I for one, feel that we place far too much importance on football, baseball
basketball and hockey. Grown men recieving obscene saleries for being
profiecient at a child's game will, in my opinion, lead to the destruction
of our decent society. Maybe you feel different. Let's talk about it.

and remember, if the kick it, roll it, hit it with a bat, catch it with a
glove, it probably matters to this conference. Don't be shy.

Oh, one more thing.

Please welcome Greg Fry (canis) to the F-w staff. I hope that he turns
out to be a very competent F-w.

don't forget the obscene amounts of money made by golfers, tennis players,
and above all, boxers...

#2 of 183 by risaacs on Sat Jul 23 22:52:49 1994:

These athletes recieve so much money, because the public which is so offended
by their salaries gives it to them. Boycot the sport if you think the athletes
make too much. Maybe stop watching football and become interested in mountain
biking, where the athletes (except a few of course) are poor.

#3 of 183 by bjt on Wed Aug 3 22:32:03 1994:

And don't forget about all the money from their product endorsements!

#4 of 183 by jema on Fri Aug 5 01:18:19 1994:

My opinion is that baseball players are very selfish. They get paid millions
of dollars, and they still think they should be paid more. Is that right?

#5 of 183 by jimmy on Fri Aug 5 22:59:01 1994:

I'm sure everyone has heard about the baseball strike set for Aug. 12.
I think this is all because of the players and owners greed. They already
make 100 times a teachers salary and they want to make 200 times that, right
Mark.

#6 of 183 by jema on Fri Aug 5 23:10:59 1994:

quit.

Jim I dislike the way you make fun of my mom.

#8 of 183 by kerouac on Tue Aug 16 19:47:32 1994:

Lets let congress remove baseballs antitrust exemption.....then the players can
sue n sue if the owners try to unilaterally impose a salary cap. That way the
players will have more leverage and wont feel like they have to strike as an
only report

#9 of 183 by carson on Thu Aug 18 05:56:18 1994:

(what's so wrong about striking?)

#10 of 183 by sportman on Sat Aug 20 18:56:48 1994:

It's simply supply and demand. If you have a favorite sport other than the
big four, and it costs but peanuts, keep it to yourself and enjoy. Dread
the day when it becomes popular enough for the networks!

#13 of 183 by rebeck on Wed Sep 28 16:41:41 1994:

Does anyone know if there is info/discussions on about
competitions involving HORSES; i.e. Jumping, Three-day eventing,
or Dressage?

#14 of 183 by canis on Sun Oct 2 05:47:18 1994:

No, but there could be......

#15 of 183 by jessesq on Sun Oct 2 21:22:57 1994:

Yeah, they do get paid too much but I pray that the NHL will have a season

#16 of 183 by ctb1013 on Sun Oct 23 00:19:17 1994:

If people are willing to pay the ticket pri then I see no reason why
athletes shouldn't be able to make as much as they do. I don't read about
complaints regarding how much singers and actors make, so give the athletes
a break!

#17 of 183 by whatisup on Thu Oct 27 12:28:13 1994:

yo do you think that's funny? spell for once!

#18 of 183 by screw on Thu Oct 27 12:36:12 1994:

yeah, screw the ball players but screw all of you who think that they shouldn't
be getting any money.! It's all you guys that paid them! yo! yo! yo!?

#19 of 183 by arnster on Fri Oct 28 18:44:23 1994:

I agree with the athletes....(NHL)....thre is definitely money out there to be
had....here in St. Louis, the Blues charge $27 for the "cheap seats" up
to $55 for the excellent seats...tell me in a 42 game home schedule
(normally) that the Blues, and other NHL franchises aren't raking in the money
even with the current level of salaries and minimally U.S. exposure!

#20 of 183 by screw on Wed Nov 9 13:10:53 1994:

yo you guys think you are cool but we need to talk about something other than
strikes and all that. how bout some fdootball or basketball. if the players in
NHL and baseball don't want to play then i don't cacre ab out them.

#21 of 183 by srw on Wed Nov 9 15:42:21 1994:

Aren't we talking about football in the football item?

#22 of 183 by tdamron on Sat Dec 10 04:25:10 1994:

All I have to say is that I would like to go out and play ball for about
five months and make that much money at it.

I am from Spain , an there the main sport is SOCCER
I live in Valencia. I support F:C Barcelona.

There was a surge of interest in soccer in the USA when the World Cup
was played here. It seems to have died down now, but soccer is growing
in the US. It just has a very long way to go.

#25 of 183 by raytlee on Sat Feb 4 10:06:36 1995:

It seems that the problem with soccer in the States is how to bridge the
gap between youth soccer and professional soccer. Any thoughts.

#26 of 183 by srw on Sat Feb 4 15:47:53 1995:

None from me. I think you're right, though.

#27 of 183 by spartan on Sat Feb 4 18:18:34 1995:

I played youth soccer for quite a few years when I was growing up, and I
really enjoyed it. But the problem is that most kids switch to football
and basketball and stuff like that when they reach high school, and their
interest in soccer kind of falls to the side.

#28 of 183 by raytlee on Sun Feb 5 06:36:14 1995:

They have college soccer on ESPN2, that may help. But then wht is not on
E2?

#29 of 183 by basil on Sun Feb 5 19:22:34 1995:

Soccer is man-andwoman-expressing theirself in the purest form possible.
Without a question, the greatest game in the world."

#30 of 183 by jep on Mon Feb 6 04:26:21 1995:

I've heard that more kids play soccer than baseball, from a study
that well predates the World Cup in the U.S.

#31 of 183 by luigi on Fri Feb 24 02:50:14 1995:

Soccer is a great sport, it has grown in popularity over the years. I think
the sport should get more publicity. I think there should professional leagues
in the US.

#32 of 183 by arnster on Fri Feb 24 19:15:27 1995:

#re 27.....that's right on target. I played soccer from the time I was
7 until 17, and loved the sport when it was in season, but when it was time
for basketball, soccer would not enter into my head until the next season.
However, I would play basketball year-round! I think that it has to do
with the scores..since soccer is so low-scoring, it seems to be boring
to fans...a 1-0 score seems to equate to no action, which is not usually
the case...anyone who's played before knows that! The indoor soccer league
in the States (the NPSL) is trying to generate fan interest by giving
different values to goals basedon how far the shot was taken from....
I've seen some of the NPSL games on TV....mostly the St. Louis Ambush
games since I live just outside of St. Louis, and they're not bad, but I'd
rather see all goals worth 1 point....
