The New Work Institute is sponsoring a New Work Network evening from 7 - 9 pm
on Monday, April 28 at the Gypsy Cafe.

This is the initial meeting of what is intended to be a monthly gathering
(fourth Monday of every month).  We are trying to gather people who run
micro-businesses to share information, tips, and war stories about being a
VERY small business.  Those of us who are putting this event together work
as consultants, home-based workers, cottage industry type enterprises.  

The topic for this first meeting is Networking Techniques.  Colleen McGee
(that's me) will be the featured speaker, and there will be experiential
learning activities as well.  (That's corporate-trainer-speak for
exercises and a chance to practice them).  Come meet others who are trying
to get their businesses going, and find out first-hand how others have
handled the problems you are facing. 

Even if you are just thinking about starting a business part-time, you
will have a chance to ask questions, and hear the wonderful and strange
things that happen when you venture out on your own into the business
world. 


There will be plenty of time for socializing and getting to know the people
who are attending.  Each person will be given one minute to introduce
themselves (and their business) and announce the kind of information they are
seeking and/or prepared to help with.  

How did your New Work Network thing go, Colleen?  I was curious about it,
but not up to attending.

We ended up rescheduling for June. (Third Monday in May is Memorial Day
weekend).  About 10 peoplehad contacted me, so I think with better publicity
we'll do much better in June.
Many of the people come to the New Work discussion group on the second Sunday
of each month.  Call me for directions if you are interested.

New Work discussion group is a discussion/activities group where people can
learn more about the New Work philosophy and how to make changes in their
lives.  New Work Network is a get-together for people engaged in
micro-businesses to meet other people in the same situation, exchange
information, and find other very-small business people to provide the services
they need.  

The Ann Arbor library is holding a workshop on internet resources for small
business people.  April 2 at 7:00 pm.  You may need to register in advance.

I'd like to announce that I've adopted a name for my business and will shortly
hire one or more people to work with me on a part-time basis. I've been a
little hesitant to do this in the past as I didn't want the hassle associated
with hiring and supervising people, but I think now's the time.

I mostly deal with high-tech companies, but I'm happy to talk to just about
anybody.

And what would "anybody" want from you?

I thought that you'd looked at my web site, which describes what I do.  I'm a
writer and editor of technical material, including articles, app notes,
manuals, etc.  I also do web sites.

*grin* I'm a text-based Grexer.  Web sites require me to trundle off to
someone else's computer.  

I use lynx, don't you?  We can download images and view them later.

Yes, I use lynx.  No, I don't have a way to view images later.

Download dvpeg from the web.  It works in DOS.  If you cannot find it that
way, search on simtel.net/msdos/jpeg.  There are several viewers that will
view jpegs and gifs and even other formats.  To download images click on them,
type D for download, save to No. 1 (enter) which puts it in your home
directoyr, and then download that file to your computer.  And view it there.
E-mail me for the details.  It took us a while to figure out.
If you use Windows there is probably a way to view images with Windows and
without dvpeg.  
        To download to your computer, use Zmodem if you have it, or Kermit,
or Ymodem batch, with the commands sz or zb (Ymodem) followed by the file
name, then give the proper command for your communications program for Zmodem
or Ymodem.  For Kermit type kermit, set file type binary, send filename, then
give the proper command, then exit when you are done.
        (No. 1 is Save to Disk.  You can also do Kermit directly to your
computer but it is slower than Ymodem batch, and often you will want to
collect several jpegs or gifs and then do Ymodem batch on *.jpg or *.gif).
