It would depend on the story. If it were a good story that I enjoyed
hearing, I would probably listen to it again. If it were a story that I
thought I had heard enough, I would probably say something like that I had
already heard it.

"Oh, yeah, you were telling me that."
"Oh, I think I've heard this one before, but go ahead."

(Bret's eyes are open yet strangely they fail to focus on anything in
particular. Why does he look so vacant?)

I'd say "Oh yeah", and then the punch line, so you know I remember it and
don't think I want you to stop talking, or anything like that.

I might do #4 unless their were people there who hadn't heard the story,
in which case I'd be more polite.

It depends on who you are. If you're my mother-in-law, I shut up
and listen. If you're my husband, I say, "Yes, dear, you told me
that before," and give the punch line. If you're something in
between, and I'm interested in serious conversation, I say, "I think
I've heard that one" and give the punch line. If you're just making
conversation while we do something, I may just tune you out for a while.

If #5 is the case, I go get a coke or something while you finish.
