an acquaintance has borrowed an item of yours somewhat regularly. this person owns an item much like it, but his/hers is broken and since this person has had regular use of your item, s/he hasn't bothered to repair his/her own. the borrowing has become somewhat of a nuisance to you. do you stop lending the item?

No, I give it to him.

I'd say (perhaps humorously) that I was getting tired of lending it, and why don't they get their own fixed. Or else I'd be a wimp and say nothing. It depends.

I offer to repair his/hers, assuming that I dislike having mine borrowed.
Valerie, I'm fresh out of three-handled family grdnzas. But you're welcome to my overripe zucchini.

Absolutely not. I kill all plants (unintentionally, of course). Come to think of it, that might be an advantage in this case. Does anyone have a grdnza for Valerie?

Quick, someone, rescue us from drift. Can I borrow a purpose in life from someone, please? That is, if you're not using it.
