Grex Scruples Item 70: The scab
Entered by carson on Thu Sep 8 03:31:15 UTC 1994:

You've recently become unemployed. A company is hiring people
in your field at a rate that you would be very happy with.
The reason this company is hiring is because its workers are on
strike and picketing in front of where you would work.

Do you cross the picket line?

It would depend on why the people were on strike. For example, if it were
a reasonably non strenuous job, and the workers were demanding a 364 days a
year payed vacation and a $5 million annual salary, I wouldn't think twice
about taking the job. On the other hand, if what the strikers were
demanding seemed reasonable, I wouldn't take it.

Never would I cross a picket line; ONLY in some states where government
employees are forbidden by law from striking as in New York under the Taylor
Act. They may collectively bargain but not strike without losing vested
benefits.
