Grex Scifi Item 54: Followup to message 53:new info, new toys, a SW fan's dream!
Entered by solo on Mon Mar 6 13:56:04 UTC 1995:

Okay, glad to see that some people still keep up with Wars and its seemingly
endless list of memorabilia. At least some of you are still awake.
Now, for some good news: Lucas has *finally* began pre-production on
the new Wars trilogy, beginning with the writing of the scripts and
sight scouting for film sights. Episode1: The Clone Wars looks to be
*very* interesting. As for Episode 2: The Seduction of Skywalker, it
plans to deal with Obi-Wan and Anakin's history, detailing Anakin's
rise to Jedi Knighthood, a *young* Yoda, and a hopeful Senator
Palpatine. Also, look for Boba Fett to have his past finally revealed.
Episode #: Fall of the Republic, deals with Anakin's turn to the
Dark Side, the creation of Vader, the fall of the Jedi Knights and the
Old Republicc, and the beginning of the Empire. Please note: the
so-called script for Fall of the Republic may or may not be used in the
films (probably not). Lucas has confirmed a 1998 release for Episode 1,
with the sequels to be released in two year intervals.

Also of interest: The new novels are considered to be canon now, as Lucasfilm
has begun to correlate the newer novels. This is important since Lucas has no
plans to film the last 3 episodes at all. :(
Boba Fett will have his own comic series along with the infamous
crimelord Jabba the Hutt. Another 5 comic series based on SW are
planned for 95, including a series on the Cantina from SW:ANH. Dark
Horse has said that the new Droids series coming out will not be a
miniseries, but the first ongoing SW series since Marvel. (Lucasphile
note: This series will detail the infamous silver leg of our favorite
gold translator droid). Classic SW toys will be available from Kenner
in June, with newer figures complementing the older line, such as the
first figure of Uncle Owen. :) Micro Machines has 4 new toys planned
for SW, including a Stormtrooper/Death Star with Vader's TIE vehicle, a
Sarlacc Pit with a skiff, Dagobah, and a Millenium Falcon toy.

here's a relatively silly question: does anyone have spare accessories for
some of the action figures? i was helping a guy move this summer, and he was
throwing away a lot of his kids stuff (his kids now being 25 and out on their
own), and he was going to throw away about 10 of the original action figures.
well, i managed to convince him to let me keep them (for free :)...they aren't
in 'mint' shape, but i don't mind. what i do want, however, is to get the
accessories that (might) have gone with them. i have han solo, darth vader,
C3PO, R2D2, and everyone's favorite basic stormtrooper. i need solo's gun
and the stormtrooper's gun, as well as anything i might be forgetting (darth
*does* have his cape, but only half his lightsabre, but i don't expect anyon
has that orange piece of plastic floating around)

so, if you have those for some reason, or could direct me to a place i could
get them, i'd appreciate it.

as far as the preliminary movie plots, they sound pretty cool, and also sound
pretty much like what i expected. as far as the new novels being canon, that
kind of disappoints me. while i enjoyed aspects of the new novels (i should
note that all i've read are the three timothy zahn novels dealing with
admiral blueskin)--such as chewbacca's homeworld--i thought as a whole they
were too 'busy'...that is, they attempted to introduce *way* too many new
characters, places, concepts...i would've preferred depth to breadth. that
said, i did enjoy the novels, and hope to read the new ones (i think it's up
to 5 or 6 now) soon.

Please explain the term "canon" used in the context "the <blah> scripts/books
have now become canon because..." TIA

#3 of 95 by luci on Wed Mar 8 17:08:52 1995:

I think canon means aspects of the story t
being true to the original storyline. So, if a story is canon to the SW movies
than it can be assumed that this story is now part of the story. I'm not
too eloquent today...It's kinda like saying okay, this story is legitimate
and can be accepted as official. In general this means that the stories
try not to conflict with one another. I guess.

#4 of 95 by solo on Wed Mar 8 17:39:02 1995:

Canon is now a BIG thing since a lot of the older novels were not canon, as
were the Marvel comics (with the telepathic rabbits). As far as the new
novels being a little too off key, I feel the Zahn novels were top notch.
Anyway. in May, look for River of Chaos, a new Wars comic seeen through the
eyes of an Imperial. Also, issue 6 of Dark Empire 2 has a way cool cover.
It's enough to make you beg for more. Anyway, Cinescape has a neato photo of
Biggs and Luke that was never used in the latest issue. Any Wars fan should
get this. As far as everything else, just email me or leave a response if you
need the help of the all-powerful Jedi Master.

#5 of 95 by solo on Fri Mar 10 13:43:59 1995:

Here's a trivia toghie for the truly dedicated Wars fan:
Who hijacked the spaceship Galaxy Wanderer?
No prizes, but I'd like to see if *anyone* can get this right.
solo

#6 of 95 by luci on Fri Mar 10 17:01:48 1995:

I don't know, but I'll guess Biggs. How about this one. What was the name
of Anakin Skywalker's wife?
No prize for this one either except for a big pat on the back.

#7 of 95 by solo on Mon Mar 20 13:44:52 1995:

The family who hijacked Galaxy Wandereer was the Malorn Family.
Depending on your source, Anakin's wife was named either Tan on Arcadia.
Now, who attempted to hire Han Solo right after Ben and Luke hired him?
Solo
Hey, it's me!

#9 of 95 by solo on Mon Mar 20 18:55:10 1995:

Okay, then, let's see. Waht is the full name of the woman who chartered the
Falcon in Han Solo's Revenge?
Also, does anyone know how to telnet to the Star Wars Fidonet sites?

#10 of 95 by luci on Sat Mar 25 08:26:02 1995:

No offense, Jason, but I couldn't care less. All the same I think her name
was Jess.

#11 of 95 by solo on Mon Mar 27 13:49:57 1995:

Actually, her name was Fionna, but I'll have to look up her full name.
Okay, then, how long does it take for a human to recover from a blaster on
stun? solo" It's not my fault!"

#12 of 95 by luci on Tue Mar 28 15:25:51 1995:

Wasn
oops! Wasn't Fiona the female lead in the musical Brigadoon?

#13 of 95 by luci on Sun Apr 2 07:17:27 1995:

I have noticed that this item is starting to falter. Would someone care
to offer some suggestions as to topics, purposes, etc. I just like to
talk about SW b/c it interests me, but I realize that everyone is interested
in different parts...so, please just take part, and discuss what you like.
I don't really think that Jason and I playing SW trivial pursuit makes for
much of an item. Anyhow...peace.

#14 of 95 by solo on Mon Apr 3 17:18:40 1995:

Good note, Michael. I'd like to keep an up to date info section for Wars, if
anyone is interested. Also, anyone interested in Fidonet for Star Wars (sort
of like Usenet, but a lot more orgaized) can email me or post a message. The
Vandelhelm Mission is actually issue 98 of Marvel SW (Supply & Demand) Children
of the Jedi is due out in hardback near the middle of the month. Those of you
with hefty checkbooks can now buy the SW cartoon cels. Actually it's sort of
expensive at 500 dot(llars a pop. Also, if you read this, feel free to explore
your feelings of SW. I consider myself eclectic when it comes to Wars. Here's
something to get you posting. Who or what was your favorite alien in any Wars
film? What is the best portion of music in any Wars film? What is the best
scene in any Wars film? Also, Michael Jones, if you'd like to, email me your
voice number and I'll do the saem. I'd like to keep correspondence with you,
but can't use Grex so often anymore. Note: Droids, the ongoing no limited issue
series starts next week.

#15 of 95 by luci on Mon Apr 3 21:47:19 1995:

I would be interested in Fidonet--don't know much about it. I don't
have your email adrress Jason, but, yes I'd like to correspond. As with
the music---I have 9 SW CDs. I love the box set and avidly reccomend it
My favorite pieces would have to be the ones that center on Yoda and the
ones that center on the Emperor. Also, I love the "The Last Duel" track
from ROTJ, where Luke and Vader duel in the emperors throne room.

#16 of 95 by luci on Mon Apr 3 21:49:18 1995:

Jason, I do not have your email address. I'll either have to get it from
you, or give you my normal address, etc.

#17 of 95 by aruba on Mon Apr 3 23:26:57 1995:

In his plan, Jason lists his email address as matchnif@tenet.edu .

#18 of 95 by luci on Tue Apr 4 05:30:04 1995:

Thanks Mark. Have a good day.

#19 of 95 by solo on Tue Apr 4 13:02:30 1995:

Anyone interested in getting logged on to the Fidonet should please email Mike
Schwab at schwbnhs@earth.execpc.com First, tell him you want to know how to get
onto Fidonet. He'll need your area code. He'll find a list of local BBS
systems which carry it (most of them offer free access) Also, wh{en you email
him, be sure to tell him that Jason Van Beveren sent you. Michael, I also enjoy
the last track on the ROTJ CD from the collectors set. You said that you had 9
CD's? What is the story behind this? There are only 3 movies. Anyway, if
anyone else needs anything, please email me or leave a rw3esponse. Jason

P.S.- Say would anyone be interested in my composing a SW newsletter to be
posted here on a monthly basis?

#20 of 95 by luci on Wed Apr 5 15:08:50 1995:

I have the box set which is 4 CDs, which were the last four CDs of the 9
which I bought. I got the SW 2 CD set, ESB, ROTJ...thinking that I had all\
of the music...later found out I didn't. (that is why I got the box set).
The 9th CD is a selection from all 3 movies put out by sony.

By the way...I hear that Kenneth Branaugh is being slated to play the
young Obi Wan Kenobi. Also heard some rumor that Christopher Lambert
(of Highlander) is being considered as young Palpatine. Anyone else
know about the casting for the new movies?

#21 of 95 by aruba on Thu Apr 6 03:55:11 1995:

Who is Palpatine?

#22 of 95 by luci on Thu Apr 6 04:59:12 1995:

Palpatine is the name of the Emperor. At one time, he was a prominent
senator in the Old Republic, until he took it over and declared himself
Emperor.

#23 of 95 by solo on Thu Apr 6 12:47:50 1995:

Actually, Kenneth Branagh will *not* play young Obi-Wan. It was just a rumor
made up by the Lonodon tabloids. Lucas confirmed this in an interview with TV
Guide. Jeremy whatshisname will still play old Boba Fett.

#24 of 95 by aruba on Thu Apr 6 23:50:49 1995:

Why will Boba Fett be old?

#25 of 95 by solo on Fri Apr 7 12:55:55 1995:

Actually, the term old meant the Fett we're used to. Actually, I do not think
we'll end up seeing his face this time. Also, the new Jabba comic is fantastic.
Has anyone else logged on to Fidonet?

#26 of 95 by luci on Tue Apr 11 05:43:17 1995:

In case no one posted it already...The next book, Children of the Jedi,
by Barbara Hambley has been out for a week at least. I haven't read it
yet...so don't give any of the plot away, okay?

#27 of 95 by solo on Tue Apr 11 13:09:37 1995:

Actually, most places have COTJ, but Dallas does not 8^(. I'm really
hping that the local bookstore gets it soon, or I'll go nuts. Also,
Droids Volume 2 issue 1 and Classic Star Wars: The Early Adventures issue 9
which features Boba Fett (YEAH!) are available tomorrow.
Anyone who hasn't yet, get the new Jabba the Hutt comic. I thouroughly
enjoyed it, and you should to.
Hasn't ANYONE else gotten on to Fidonet yet?
If you read this, you MUST respond.

#28 of 95 by slandis on Tue Apr 11 22:05:05 1995:

I am on fidonet at 1:226/268.

#29 of 95 by luci on Wed Apr 12 01:46:29 1995:

I have not gotten on Fidonet yet...Jason I mailed you twice but to no avail

#30 of 95 by solo on Wed Apr 12 12:52:33 1995:

Michael, try to email me at either matchnif@tenet.edu or solo@cyberspace.org
Has anyone else played Dark Forces yet? Does it even compare to Doom?
BTW: the answer to the question how long does it take someone to recover
from a blaster on stun is 10 minutes.
I sent you mail Mike, I hope you got it.

#31 of 95 by luci on Wed Apr 12 16:10:08 1995:

Thanks, Jason. I hope you get my responses, too. Does anyone know if any
of the original cast has plans on taking a role in the prequels (even as
characters other than the ones they played in SW, ESB, and ROTJ)

#32 of 95 by tomservo on Thu Apr 13 17:58:33 1995:

While helping a friend with a school pproject, we exploreed the Skywalker
family history--we were lacking in a lot of details...if anyone knows
anything about it, let me know! Also, here's a thought to ponder...If Leia
hadn't made it safely to Alderaan, and instead had been taken by Palpatine
and raised to serve the Dark Side, how would the story have turned out?
Discuss.

#33 of 95 by luci on Fri Apr 14 06:39:03 1995:

Well, then Luke would have been responsible for siring the next generation
of Jedi...and considering Luke's luck with women, the outlook would have
been bleak. Also, the Rebel Alliance probably never would have gotten off
the ground (seeing as how Leia was one of the more integral members). And
Han wouldn't have been needed to haul Obiwan to Alderaan, seeing as how it
was Leia who implored Obi to come to the rescue. In short, there wouldn't
have been anything near the same story if any at all.

#34 of 95 by tomservo on Mon Apr 17 18:36:33 1995:

What exactly *is* Fidonet, anyway?

#35 of 95 by robh on Mon Apr 17 22:54:06 1995:

A network many years old, which sends mail between various
computers, has conference topics, etc. In short, a computer
network that isn't the Internet. >8)

#36 of 95 by janc on Tue Apr 18 01:48:49 1995:

Unlike internet sites, it is cheap and easy to create a fidonet site.
Like the internet, fidonet is unreliable and flakey, and run by an
anarchical mob of amatures.

#37 of 95 by solo on Tue Apr 18 13:21:37 1995:

Who wants to become famous overnite? I'm doing an article for the Sw fidonet
newsletter, and everyone who's 21 or younger can answer.
1.) What is your DOB?
2.) What is the first movie you remember seeing?
3.) What is the first memory you have regarding SW?
4.) How long have you been a SW fan?
5.) Do you consider yourself dedicated to the cause of the Jedi? That is,
will you readily get anything With SW on it?
6.) Have you seen any of the 3 films in the thwatre?
7.) What's the one thing about SW that sticks in your mind?
To everyone, thanx in advance for your help. ALso, Mike Jones, I still
haven't gotten your email yet. Send it to either matchnif@tenet.edu or
solo@cyberspace.org I prefer the latter. It's easier to access.
Nobody may slam fidonet in this message. It's more powerful than you think.
No one may discuss Children of the
Jedi at all here until I give the signal (which won
't be for a while yet.
